The Number #1 Priority for Chief HR Officers in 2023 - Manager and Leader Effectiveness

And what makes a good manager?

Strong Emotional Intelligence.

Here are 5 ways you can develop your EQ as a Manager:
First off, what is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional Intelligence is a collection of elements comprising our emotional and social functioning and general psychological well-being.

All of these elements can be improved if we are intentional about working on them.
Empathy - putting yourself in someone else's shoes

Manager Action: Go beyond listening to words and pay attention to non-verbal communication.

Focus on the emotional cues being expressed by your direct reports
Interpersonal Relationships - creating relationships based on trust and compassion

Manager Action: Be approachable.

Smile and maintain eye contact, use open body language and remove physical barriers.
Optimism - a positive outlook on life

Manager Action: Next time you are frustrated, focus on solutions.

It can be easy to focus on the problems at hand, but be intentional about seeing the positive in situations.
Stress Tolerance - your ability to cope with stressful situations

Manager Action: Be intentional about taking care of yourself so you can take care of your direct reports.

When you start to feel nervous or anxious, stand up, stretch, and move around.
Flexibility - adapting your thoughts and beliefs to unfamiliar situations

Manager Action: On an issue where your opinion is fixed, consider two other points of view to the extent that you could argue that side of the argument in a debate.

Be willing to change your mind.
