Cutting methane emissions is the strongest lever we have to slow climate change now. #BTC mining is 1 of the 2 strongest hands we have to pull that lever

This'll be a surprising fact for many

So here's the most 7 common misconceptions that can stop people grasping it
1. “Burning methane releases CO2 which will increase our carbon emissions”.

The opposite is true. Both and CO2 and hydrocarbons like Methane (CH4) contribute to climate change.

However, over a 20 year period, Methane has 84x the warming effect of CO2.
Burning I T methane releases 2.75 T CO2.

So combusting methane to generate power decreases Carbon emissions by 84/2.75 = 31x.

Not 31%, 31X. ie: a 3100% reduction.
2. “We should be focusing on renewable energy, not burning methane”

Not so. “Cutting methane is the strongest lever we have to slow climate change over the next 25 years” (UNEP).

Focusing on cutting methane doesn’t mean we stop our transition to renewables.

We need both
The good news is, because methane only stays in the atmosphere for only 12 years, a concerted effort to reduce methane can prevent 0.3 degrees of heating this decade (source: UNEP)
3. “Flaring removes methane anyway”

Not so. Global combustion efficiency in 2020 was only ~92%

That methane which doesn't get combusted is responsible for 1.7% all our GHG emissions

Using that for #BTC mining is arguably the fastest way we can reduce emissions this decade
4.“The climate-change benefits are marginal”

Could not be less true. Methane emissions count for 25% of all GHGs.

Global flaring/venting is now 1.7% of our entire GHG emissions, and internal combustion is the most trusted way to remove residual methane from flared gas.
5. “We should use flared gas for hospitals, residential heating, EVs …”

Unless you build your hospital or residential housing village in the middle of an oilfield, this power needs be delivered via either pylon transmitted electricity @ $3M/mile, or gas pipelines @ $5M/mile
...that’s not economically feasible.

Mobile Bitcoin miners are the only location-agnostic user who's happy to locate in the oilfield and start generating power by removing harmful methane immediately.
6. "We should cut animal agriculture. That's the biggest methane-polluter"

Who said that we shouldn’t reduce agriculture emissions too? Yes, IPCC recommend more strongly plant-based diets to combat climate change...
...But even if we all become plant-based tomorrow, most of our human-created methane would still spew into the atmosphere each year.

Agriculture reductions can make a bigger difference: Bitcoin mining can make a faster difference. Both are needed.
7. “Oil companies will use that money to do more drilling"

Revenue from Bitcoin mining is hardly large enough to sponsor more drilling.

Besides having the Oil Industry pivot to revenue streams which reduce rather than contribute to global emissions is in everyone's interests.
Reducing methane emissions is the strongest lever we have to combating climate change, and #Bitcoin mining is one of the 2 strongest hands we have to pull that lever

Happily, an exponential growing number of #BTC miners who are solving the problem right now already know this
