I specialize in the history of the ancient Mediterranean world, teaching courses in Greek and Roman history, ancient Egypt, the History of Disease, Law and Society, World History, History of Marriage, and the Economic History of Pre-Modern Europe. I also teach our pedagogy course for PhD students, "Teaching History at Colleges and Universities," and am passionate about best practices in undergraduate teaching and the philosophy of active learning. I have written books on Roman imperialism, on the ancient physician Galen, and on the world history of menopause. I'm now pursuing research interests in the early history of property and small self-governing communities.
