Florentine Renaissance artists are more famous today than their Venetian contemporaries in large part because Vasari, a Florentine, wrote about them while some were still alive. But that says a lot about how readable and full of interest is Vasari's book "Lives of the Artists."

Lord Kenneth Clark's 13-hour 1969 documentary "Civilisation" about European art from the Dark Ages to WWI pretty much invented the genre of the classy high-end PBS-style long documentary. It's on Youtube. I dunno if it's available in high-definition, though.
