Completed undergraduate degree in mathematics and post-graduate work in mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University. Became a sandal maker and got involved in student movements in the 1960s. Switched PhD program from mathematics to economics at Harvard and completed dissertation on Alienation and power: towards a radical welfare economics. Became an assistant and later associate professor in Harvard's Economics Department.
