Thread
A I

For everyone, this theme is extremely tough: for artists who chose not to use AI, for artists who have adopted AI, and for collectors.
I discovered myself in the midst of this fresh artistic revolution or crisis.

Huge thread and my thoughts 🧵
1/29
Some of my friends despise AI and have joined the lawsuit against it, while others use AI more frequently and it enhances their ability to produce art.

Finally, I want to state my position.
2/
Disclaimer: I'm up for engaging in conversations about AI. But before you take offense or write something bad, please read this carefully. Read my thoughts multiple times if necessary. I'm here to talk, not to debate or spread negativity.
3/
In spring 2022 I was thrilled when Midjourney emerged. I had the impression that this was the same AI companion of which I had long-ago fantasies. He assisted to set the visuals for the idea, which I developed into my own art.
4/
Back in spring 2022, when I opened my FB, I saw that my friends in the video games and film industries were terrified that AI might threaten their livelihoods. I took this with a grain of salt. I was more concerned about the war, AI seemed to have only advantages to me.
5/
When AI started to produce images that nearly didn't require editing, some people began to pretend to be artists, hiding the fact of using AI. For me, it was these people who sent out the first warning sign that something is going wrong.
6/
At the same time, the artists discovered that AI combined already-existing paintings by artists that it finds on the Internet. The result was apparent right away: a lot of similar works emulating someone's art style appeared.
7/
And I started to see more and more tweets that AI artists should keep fighting. My friends who started to use AI became offended by any criticisms against AI, even a justified ones.
8/
Artists are divided into two camps. On Facebook, I read about the lawsuit against AI, the protection of competition in the entertainment industry, about the ethical sides of AI. On Twitter - about the fact that AI opened the door for every person to art.
9/
I spent a lot of time managing my emotions.
To be really honest, I'm impressed by AI's skills, but I also feel intimidated by AI.

AI is faster than me, AI can produce cool results, using AI I could produce a AAA image every day… but I decided not to.

Why?
10/
I fought for my voice, my style, and my vision for many years. I also felt by using AI I was driving myself into a trap. After all, the main goal of my art is to show my world via the lens of my thoughts and the visuals I saw throughout my life.
11/
AI creates stunning images that are simple to fall in love with. It was cool when there were simply blurry images, which needed to be finalized. But when it's a final image that can be fixed in 20 minutes... it's intimidating. I can't claim these images as mine.
12/
Plus the ethical side. AI was fed a lot of unique works that were created by the hands of unique people, insanely talented. All my idols are against AI. Therefore, from a purely ethical point of view, I cannot afford not to listen to those who taught me the art.
13/
I believe that for already-artists AI is a great temptation to speed up the process, and earn more likes, attention, and money, spending fewer resources, effort, and time. But, like any temptation, there is a downside.
14/
Skill regression, originality regression, and loss of efficiency. I think if the artist uses AI for a long time, then he/she will no longer want to draw something by hand. You tell me: dude, AI will not leave, so if you start to use it - you don't have to stop using it.
15/
But what if I love the 50 hours art challenge, what if I love the process itself and I'm afraid of losing this love?
Look how the process can be satisfied by itself.
16/

Yes, I made the choice to create long, slowly, and painfully. My final result may look exactly like an AI image done in an hour.

I started recording the processes to show what I'm going through. To invite you into the world of human art.
/17

I want to give more value to human art because I see how many AI contests there are in the NFT space and that collectors are looking more and more towards AI art as AI artists feel offended. But human artists also need support more than ever.
18/

Therefore, I personally chose the side and the movement of pure human artists. I don't want to fight AI artists, but I want to remain the voice of human artists in the NFT space. I want a healthy discussion.
19/
You may know that I enjoy science fiction a lot. In the past, people were concerned that robots and AI might replace human labor. It brought up significant societal challenges. For example the recent show - Humans, or the video game Detroit: Become Human.
20/
But apparently, the reality will be different and no one could guess that. There is a risk that AI will replace all creative professions, and the entire entertainment industry will be in the hands of IT people who wrote AI.
21/
Imagine that art will become a privilege and will be passed down from generation to generation.
Human artists will become a closed caste, which will be impossible to get into because of AI. Imagine all films, series, games, all pictures - all this will be created by AI.
22/
Do you like this kind of future? I don't. This is also the reason why I am on the side of the lawsuit against AI. I really think that AI in the entertainment industry is unfair competition. And I'm glad that a lot of studios and directors understand this.
23/
As for the art in the NFT space, I know many unique AI creators who put in hours of work to create their AI work by combining different techniques. Opening up new frontiers. Making animations, and patterns, writing their own codes, etc.
24/
Of course, such art is insanely interesting to look at, and I support this direction of art. AI art, as a separate genre of art, especially when all issues with ethics are completed, this is good.
25/
To summarize:
1. I chose the path of a human artist. I understand all the difficulties that I have encountered, but I want to create art myself. And I want people to see my process. This is not a declaration of war on the AI by the artist, but simply my choice.
26/
2. I respect AI works that require ingenuity, time, and hard work. I personally support such artists and love their work. I leave comments on such artists and appreciate them.
27/
3. I fear for the future of the entertainment industry and hope that humans will not be replaced by AI. That films, games, and series - will be created by people, and not by AI, which will be controlled by corporations, depriving people of creativity.
28/
I hope you understand my thread correctly. And I hope that artists from both sides will find a compromise and will enjoy each other's art.
