How to Succeed on Medium in 2023:

•Will the new CEO return Medium to its glory days?
•Is Medium still a good platform for new writers?
•What about Twitter, LinkedIn, and Subtack?

Here are my brutally honest thoughts about Medium's future //THREAD//
Medium used to be a place where you could make $20-50k per month just from writing articles.

These days that range is more like $1-10k

Even though earnings aren't crazy high anymore, you should still write on Medium because it helps you get PAID to PRACTICE.
The truth newbie writers fail to understand:

Even back in the "glory days," the vast majority of writers on the platform were broke.

80/20 distributions happen on every platform:

- A few writers get all the views
- A few writers make all the money
- Most writers are invisible
You must understand this correlation:

The reason why you don't make money writing is simple -- your writing isn't good enough.

You need to practice.

Medium is the perfect place to practice your writing and make money.
The ideal scenario for Medium writers in 2023:

- Write 2-4 times per day with the goal of making four figures
- Use the traffic you get from Medium to build your list
- Repurpose Medium content to social media
The mindset you need to be a successful writer:

Most writers fail because they think like employees. If they don't get immediate ROI they quit.

If you work to get better the money and the audience comes on the back end.
Use Medium's traffic and authority to your advantage:

- Publish on your blog
- Copy to Medium
- 301 re-direct your Medium posts to your personal blog

You can pick up backlinks and SEO traffic to your site. A writer I know got 30,000 monthly organic search views doing this:
Use Medium and your blog as a central foundation:

Going all in on short form is a mistake.

Don't let the gurus fool you. Long form is still king. Take @EdLatimore who is a master of short-form but has a well-optimized personal blog.

Do both.
How to repurpose content from Medium to Twitter:

- Take list posts and turn them into threads
- Take your most highlighted sentences and turn them into Tweets
- Tweets can be repurposed to IG and LinkedIn (if you have time)

Go from long form to short form.
Why long-form to short-form is ideal:

I've seen prolific Tweeters comment that it's hard for them to write long posts.

They're trained to write in quick sound bites so the idea of a long newsletter or book frightens them

It's like going from lifting just the bar to 3 plates
Medium is the best platform for WRITERS:

If you want to go the short-form-only route, you will have to become a guru and sell products before you make $1

Some people just love to write. Medium puts money in your pocket just for the craft. We're not all meant to be threadbois.
But what about alternatives?

Re: Substack. Try it. I have one, but understand that you won't make any money until *after you've built a list* and converted some of them to paid.

Good luck with that if you haven't even built a solid writing habit.
My Prediction:

Medium will have a renaissance period and the new team will make it even better than it already is.

The writers who stick with Medium and write prolifically in 2023 will make thousands and build an audience who loves their work.
