Picasso Thread 🧵
You see, during an artists career, they will create some sketches, some great works, and then there are some that are EXCEPTIONAL works.

Masterpieces.

Who decides if they are exceptional ?
Well, the audience of course.

The artist is just doing his thing. Creating.
“Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O)” is the final painting in a series of 15 pieces painted between 1954 and 1955

The 15 paintings were originally bought by Victor and Sally Ganz in 1956 for $212,500

So Yes, Picasso did make a lot of money from it, but in 1955 he was 75 yrs old !
He was lucky to have lived a very long life, and had already been creating for 66 years !!!

Did he know that it was going to be his most expensive painting later in the future ? Did he decide any of what is happening now ?

Absolutely not.

He just did what he does best : Art
For people who don't like Derivative work.

" Les femme D'algers " by Picasso is depicting a harem scene based on Eugene Delacroix’s Les femmes d’Alger (1834), a painting he had been fascinated with ever since he came to Paris as a young man to admire it in the Louvre
So remember that we are all human, and we are all connected and inspired by each other.

Yes one can thrive as an individual.

But can do very little without the stepping stones of those who came before us and inspired us, And those around us who support us !

We are ALL one !
Picasso was not Born wealthy.
But He became Very wealthy during his life.

At the time of his death his net worth was between $100 and $250 million. Equal to $530 million to $1.3 billion today, after adjusting for inflation.

Did have all of this in cash ?

Not really.
The vast majority of this value came from his personal collection.

His collection included more than 100 000 pieces and editioned works.

1 million, 500 milion, 1 billion $ , these are all just numbers.

Most of the Value is in his OWN work that he spent a Lifetime perfecting !
What's the big secret ?

Why was Picasso's work very high valued even during his lifetime ?

Courage, Experimentation , and a little bit of luck.

Although he started with realism.

He went where very few other artists dared to wander.

Ended up creating something new and unique
Was it an overnight Success ?
Here's the story.
You be the judge.

On the day of his 19th birthday, Picasso left his family in Spain and immigrated to Paris, the art capital of Europe at the time.
He could barely speak French, had little money and lived in a small studio with broke artists, who all worked hard to make a living from their art.

And for a short while, Picasso made some headway, until his close friend, Carlos Casagemas, committed suicide February 17, 1901
Traumatized by the death of his friend, Picasso began to create sombre paintings in only shades of blue and blue-green, which led to withdrawal of his art dealers support....

But In life, Everything happens for a reason.
Left with little money to eat, Picasso returned home to Barcelona to live off his family.

His father, said that he had no chance of making a living as a painter.

This could have been the end.

But Heroes are the ones who don't usually give up that easily.
One year later, however, Picasso had the courage to leave home again and traveled back to Paris to have another shot at a career in painting.

This time Picasso would strike gold.
In November 1904, a wealthy American Heiress, Gertrude Stein, discovered Picasso’s artwork and bought 10 of his paintings. She also commissioned Picasso to paint an image of herself, which would later become the famous Portrait of Gertrude Stein.
By 1905, Picasso had become the favorite artist of the Stein family, and Gertrude exhibited his paintings at her home in Paris.

This is what i was referring to as " A little bit of luck "

You don't need a million collectors.
Sometimes you only need 1 who truly believes in you.
In 1907, at the age of 25 years old, Picasso created his breakthrough painting, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, arguably the most important painting of the 20th century, which launched the cubism art movement and shaped modern art.

The rest is history.
To the naked eye, it may look like Picasso was an overnight success and a natural born creative genius.

Truth is, by the time he created Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, the breakthrough painting, he had spent nearly 20 years creating approximately 7,300 pieces of artwork.

7300 !!!!
This is an incredible volume of work by any standard.

And for me personally, this is what makes Picasso the great artist he is today.

It's never about how much someone can take.
But how much they can leave behind.

He literally left us an incredible part of his mind and soul.
