PSA/Request: Recently I got an email from a graduate student asking for advice on getting into public-facing philosophy.
It surprised me I couldn't find a comprehensive list of resources to point him to, so I ended up making my own. I would be happy to learn what I missed! 🧵1/7
My immediate response to the student was that while editors are always open to pitches, it helps to have 1) a track record of prior work to point to and 2) a good sense of the kind of writing that the publication you are pitching tends to publish.

Beyond that: 2/7
First, here is the list I gave of good places to get one's foot in the door with public-facing philosophical writing:
@1000wordphil: 1000wordphilosophy.com
@PrindlePost: www.prindleinstitute.org/prindle-post/
@philosophersmag: www.philosophersmag.com
@apa_blog: blog.apaonline.org 3/7
Second, here are some such outlets whose editorial standards are more demanding:
@aeonmag: aeon.co and psyche.co
@the_point_mag: thepointmag.com
@TheRavenMag1: ravenmagazine.org
@BostonReview: www.bostonreview.net/topics/philosophy-religion/ 4/7
Third, here are a few organizations that support philosophers and other academics doing public-facing writing (and podcasting too):
@PublicPhilNet: www.publicphilosophynetwork.net
@apaphilosophy Committee on Public Phil: www.apaonline.org/group/public
(ctd.) 5/7
More orgs supporting philosophers and other academics doing public-facing work:
@The_Line_Edit: www.beyondtheivorytower.com
Marc Sanders Foundation: marcsandersfoundation.org/public-philosophy/ 6/7
And, that's what I have. No real discussion of podcasts here, since I don't feel well-positioned to do that.
I would, again, be very happy to hear about anything I have missed! Might compile a new thread if there are many. Thanks in advance. 7/7
One that I missed is @the_Pamphlet_: www.the-pamphlet.com
