Thread
Digital identity is a crucial crypto problem to solve.

I talked to an expert on the topic, Harvard MBA Professor and part of the @a16z Crypto team -- @skominers.

This is what you NEED to know about web3 identity and reputation:
1/ On-chain digital identity is here

The last bull cycle saw people start to engage with crypto applications for the first time.

These actions form the foundation for decentralized identity.

1. Collecting NFTs
2. Participating in DAOs
3. Attaching data to NFT domains
2/ web2 offers a false premise of ownership

Our web2 activity is comprised of posting photos and updates.

These reciprocals of identity only live within the frame of the platform that they are in.

1. They are silo'd
2. There is no control
3. You don't own the data you create
3/ Owning your identity is a paradigm shift

Ownership means your identity is:

1. Portable
2. Persistent
3. Linked to reputation

4/ Portable identity

When you own your digital identity, you can take it with you to any new valuable platform.

This increases competition amongst platforms (users need to want to use it) vs locking users in through network effects and algorithms.

5/ Persistent identity

web3 identity is not ephemeral - it will last as long as the blockchain exists.

This encourages long-term thinking around your online reputation and how you thoughtfully engage with / create digital content.

6/ Reputation based identity

With one true source for your full self online, the possibilities are endless for how we can associate our identity to our reputation.

1. Likes
2. Credit
3. Reviews
4. Fandom
5. Streams
6. Diplomas
7. Followers
8. Comments
9. Certifications
7/ web3 reputation enables capturing of digital exhaust

Ex: you create a PPT that your CEO opens 20 times.

That data doesn't live anywhere. It's not tracked or linked back to you.

Digital Echo: as NFT assets are interacted with they can propagate data back to the identity.
8/ Processed digital exhaust

Algorithmic aggregators will make sense of your on-chain transactions to create your digital resume.

The data is verifiable, accessible, and portable to any platform that is web3 identity interoperable.
9/ Data curation is important

in a world where things are immutable, you have to be careful about what you store.

@unstoppableweb badges are an MVP of personal and technical curation. Users decide what is public on their profile.

10/ web3 identity allows you to bring your whole self online

As we curate more complete versions of ourselves online, search and discovery will improve.

People will be able to find:

1. True fans
2. IRL and online events
3. Friends with similar interests
11/ web3 identity brings humanity to the blockchain

When you interact on-chain you are just an address. An address provides very low dimensional data.

Innovations like NFT domains allow us to bring our identity + reputation with us around the internet.
