Oh look, the government is talking about turbo charging the economy by introducing sunset clauses.

This also happened under the Coalition. Apparently it was the fierce rule, from 2011, that Regulations Shall be Sunset 2/
And look, it made it into law in some form, 2013 3/
Sunset clauses were one of about five Coalition era initiatives to Clamp Down on Regulation. Others:

- One in One Out, shake it all about
- the Small Companies Exempted nonsense (see below)
- the Red Tape Challenge
- the End to Gold Plating

Thing is, did any really work? Can anyone list regulations that have expired as a result of the 2011 sunset rules? Or new rules that came in post 2014 which just didn't apply to small companies ("these chemicals are deadly. Except if your company only employs 9 people") 5/
What they end up being is *rules to render the process of making regulating more difficult and distorting.*

This can make it harder to do business, or govern - a time fuse on a law is a weird idea. In fact, they're extra red tape. IRONIC!

Anyway, I'm on holiday. Shouldn't look at silly headlines. Maybe I'll be wrong and the economy will be rocket boosted by all this bureaucratic horse play. 7/7
