OPEN EDITION - DR. YELLOWBOOTS

My mum has written all her life but never shared her words.

She asked if I could help.

So, on the day of her 80th birthday party, I'm sharing an Open Edition of an original typewritten first draft she wrote about first meeting my Dad.

REASONS TO MINT

1 - It's a beautiful, historical character portrait.

2 - It's a vote for on-chain literature. The text is stored within the smart contract.

3 - Show someone their words matter - and will live on

This represents the first short story I was ever aware that she wrote. I've looked after it for years, always wondering what the best way to honour it might be - and to show her that her words have value.

This typewritten, pencil-edited draft is part story, part time capsule
THEN & NOW

This is my mum - Maureen. She's about the sweetest person you'll ever meet. My Mum and Dad are the reason I started writing. They both talked about writing and read me the books that got me going with all of my work.
STORIES THAT LAST

There's something very beautiful about stories written on fragile media. The original draft of Dr. Yellowboots is scrappy, with pencil edits all over it. That's what makes it special.

Equally, there's something powerful about words that remain...

ON-CHAIN TEXT

I've embedded my mum's story 'Dr. Yellowboots' in the smart contract of this drop. In many ways, the visual is just a token, representing the 'capture' of her words. The fact that these words will not be lost, means so much.
This drop is only open for the next 36 hours. At some point, I may share more of her work, but making sure this delicate draft remained felt like the most wonderful place to start - to demonstrate her writing is worth something.
It was written about meeting my Dad - when, at first, he was a mysterious character that seemed to be known by everyone but not one person could actually tell you what he did when the sun came up. He wore a pair of yellow Dr. Martens boots, and became known as Dr. Yellowboots.
I've spoken a lot recently about the wonderful things we can do with writing and books when we build on top of a dynamic technology, such as blockchain.

But this is a much simpler 'win'. Preserving and framing moments of personal significance and ensuring our words remain.
DR. YELLOWBOOTS is symbolic as much as anything. A time capsule, holding her words in space - a symbol that Maureen Ekvalls's words will remain, that they matter, and that people would want to read more of them.

RECAP

For her 80th birthday, I'm releasing a short story my mum wrote to show her two things.

1 - Her words matter.

2 - Her words will survive.

And I think, with some encouragement, she might pick up her pen once more...

p.s. the loading of the 3D viewer can sometimes be slow - will troubleshoot why asap and push any necessary updates. Currently traveling to the party with a cake of her face!
+ special thanks to @encapsuled_ for his help in getting this over the line!

Cap - You’re an absolute legend!
p.p.s. If you’ve read this far, do leave my mum a happy birthday! She will be thrilled to know peoples eyes have been on her words - just to be ‘seen’ means so much
