Truss and Sunak must stop pandering to Tory nimbys and start building houses. It’s urgent

Britain has a housing crisis. Of course, it has a lot of other crises too: sky-high inflation, the threat of winter blackouts, an NHS that’s close to breaking point, public sector strikes, a shooting war in eastern Europe and all the rest of it. But housing is definitely up there. Last Thursday, the Office for National Statistics reported that the average home in England now costs the average worker almost nine times their salary. Across the UK as whole, houses are less affordable than at any time in the past 150 years.
