Lords of Finance is great I think the first few chapters of Krugman's Depression Economics are also a good guide to the basics of monetary policy (and accessible/ well written)
Red Capitalism at its finest ... (I do strongly recommend the Howie and Walter book -- its history of the financial moves of China back in the 00s is very relevant now)
