While the Donbas was an expected target, the attempt to take the whole of Ukraine has come as a shock.
Russian is claiming Ukraine belongs to Russia/that they're trying to protect Russian's in Ukraine but a look at language shows how much of a lie this is.

Lies have played a big role in this war.
The main narrative - that Russia is the innocent victim of "nazi" Ukraine's aggression - goes hand in hand with the military strategy, and even precedes it.

This was highly co-ordinated.

These are not just the ramblings of Putin & random officials - it is part of their strategy.

The question now is will Putin maintain enough support at home for his ongoing invasion as Russia comes under intense pressure internationally.
While he cares less for the public will, if the pockets of wealthy Russian oligarchs also start to suffer, this may hurt him at home.
