All That Is Mine I Carry With Me: A Novel Audio CD – Unabridged, March 7, 2023

4.2 out of 5 stars 3,715 ratings

A mother vanished. A father presumed guilty. There is no proof. There are no witnesses. For the children, there is only doubt. From the New York Times bestselling author of Defending Jacob. . . .

“Astonishing, powerful, and provocative, this book is worth the excruciating wait for another William Landay.”―Louise Penny, author of A World of Curiosities

One afternoon in November 1975, ten-year-old Miranda Larkin comes home from school to find her house eerily quiet. Her mother is missing. Nothing else is out of place. There is no sign of struggle. Her mom’s pocketbook remains in the front hall, in its usual spot.

So begins a mystery that will span a lifetime. What happened to Jane Larkin?

Investigators suspect Jane’s husband. A criminal defense attorney, Dan Larkin would surely be an expert in outfoxing the police.

But no evidence is found linking him to a crime, and the case fades from the public’s memory, a simmering, unresolved riddle. Jane’s three children―Alex, Jeff, and Miranda―are left to be raised by the man who may have murdered their mother.

Two decades later, the remains of Jane Larkin are found. The investigation is awakened. The children, now grown, are forced to choose sides. With their father or against him? Guilty or innocent? And what happens if they are wrong?

A tale about family―family secrets and vengeance, but also family love―All That Is Mine I Carry With Me masterfully grapples with a primal question: When does loyalty reach its limit?

Review

“Told from four perspectives, this audio provides listeners with fragments of the mystery through the eyes of Phil (Jeff's childhood friend), Jeff, Dan, and Jane herself. Each member of the quartet of narrators―David de Vries, Joyce Bean, Patrick Lawlor, and Scott Merriman―performs a different point-of-view, taking the production to a higher level and capturing the essence of the characters over a 40-year timespan. [T]heir collective performances transport listeners into the minds of each character. Most notable are Bean's portrayal of Jane and Lawlor's of Dan. The use of multiple narrators enhances Landay's (Defending Jacob) latest and will have listeners fully invested in Jane's story. A production well worth the listen.” Library Journal

“This is an example of a great story with narrators who understand their characters and who portray them beautifully. The unique aspect of the story―and an added challenge for the narrators―is that multiple first-person perspectives are used. A woman is missing, and suspicion is cast on her husband. The family is split over his innocence. The emotions that come with this horrific situation are clearly embraced by the quartet of narrators. Frustration and anger boil over. Sarcasm seeps in. Each of the three children is a different person with their own baggage, and the narration captures them all while alternating between time frames. A detective with an appropriate New England accent is particularly well done. The book is riveting, the narrators carry the pace, and the twists are well supported yet surprising.” AudioFIle Magazine

“The story is told in four parts and the different narrators add psychological suspense to the intricately plotted storyline.… The open-ended conclusion is thought-provoking, encouraging listeners to consider the nature of parental and familial relationships. Readers of Oyinkan Braithwaite and Mary Kubica will enjoy the tonal quality and unique characterizations. As the narrators change, so do the characters' perceptions of each other, giving the listener a multifaceted experience of this moving family saga.” Booklist

“An enthralling mystery and a haunting family tragedy, heartbreaking in places, with deeply drawn characters and all the thrills of a classic whodunnit . . . I couldn’t put this down. You won’t be able to either.”―Alex Michaelides, author of The Silent Patient and The Maidens

“Powerful and provocative, All That Is Mine I Carry With Me explores the dynamics of family and the ways in which vengeance can control and destroy the ones we love.”―Louise Penny, #1 New York Times bestselling author of A World of Curiosities

“Masterful, original, and riveting, and the best book I’ve read in quite a while . . . With its subtle mystery and compelling portraits of how lives are transformed in the aftermath of violent crime, it possessed me from the very first line to the last page.”―Scott Turow, author of Presumed Innocent and Suspect

“With All That Is Mine I Carry With Me, the masterful author of Defending Jacob has created something riveting, unforgettable, and original―unlike any other crime novel I've read.”―Joseph Finder, New York Times bestselling author of House on Fire

“Riveting, intense, and breathtakingly compelling . . . William Landay has brilliantly broken every rule of storytelling in this haunting masterpiece of a novel―part legal thriller, part family drama, and part literary tour de force.”―Hank Phillippi Ryan, USA Today bestselling author of The House Guest

Woah!!
“The question isn’t whether someone should pay; the question is who. You? Or him?” A mother is missing. A father is presumed guilty. There is no evidence, and three children are left to ponder these truths. 4.5 stars rounded up! Woah! This is a slow burn thriller but so unique in that you actually know what happens well before the characters do. This unique perspective makes it feel like you’re watching true crime on T.V., yelling at the characters to OPEN THEIR EYES because you can see sooo much more than they can. The last 1/3 of the book had me unable to step away. Like literally reading standing in line or at any lull in my day. This book was so good and just had so much depth that these characters felt real to me. @williamlanday also wrote Defending Jacob, which I read years ago and also enjoyed. “Did you know my father back then? Of course. Did you ever try a case against him? Many times. He was a good lawyer, wasn’t he? He was an excellent lawyer. What did you think of him personally? He was an excellent lawyer. Ah. That’s what I thought.” A lesson in how to say a lot without actually saying a lot. 👏🏻

The way this story is told, from multiple vantage points (including one no longer living,) was truly a marvel to behold. There were so many ways it could've slipped, become flabby and incoherent; something that came so close but came apart. But Landay not only avoided those pitfalls, but crafted a terrifically tension filled story filled with realistic characters that never sagged at all. Always, the delicious drama and emotion builds, even when the answer to whodunit was known for a long time. I found myself invested until the very end because these characters real, believeable, and I cared. That's the magic of a book, and this is a good one.

Through four different lenses we follow the Larkin family in the aftermarh of the disappearance of Jane, wife of unlikable defense lawyer, Dan, and mother of Alex, Phil and Mimi. Was it a stranger killing, or could the sharp, slippery Dan be behind it? But motive is initially hard to find, and evidence non-existent. As a result, the book is almost entirely about people’s gut feeling towards Dan
Jane’s sister is convinced, but then she never liked him. Alex is not, but when we get to hear his voice, he’s as schooled in the law as his father, and he left for college not long after Jane’s disappearance, his future path always clear to him. The inexperienced lead detective is also certain but lacks the support of his DA.
The biggest impacts, and the most ambiguity in feelings, are seen with Phil and Mimi; losing their mother at formative ages follows them, like a wrecking ball, through their whole life.
The four “books” within the book is an interesting contrivance, the voices of the different narrators introducing details that might otherwise be hidden to the reader. The peculiarities of New York and Vermont law also play their part. But it is this ambiguity, and the slow pacing of the novel, that ultimately left me dissatisfied, and hence only a 3: the twists, when they came, were too late on, and felt under-explored.

This was my first William Landy novel and I enjoyed it, in part because of the story and in part because of the way in which it was laid out. The conclusion was good but the actual ending fell a little short for me. But the author did a great job of showing how a catastrophic event can break down a family and the people in it. I recommend.

Landay’s book is an immersive and evocative family saga that spans decades. The reader is immediately drawn into the story of the 1975 disappearance of Jane Larkin, a wife and mother of three young children. Police strongly suspect her attorney husband, Dan, was somehow involved, but find no solid evidence to implicate him.
Years pass, and speculation continues, but with no further leads, the case goes cold. Alex, Jeff and Miranda are left to grapple with the confusion, frustration and fear regarding what could have happened to their devoted mother. Their father is work-focused and ill-equipped to handle their tumultuous feelings, so they flounder together and alone, endlessly waiting. As time passes, the mysterious vanishing begins to encroach further on all of their lives, becoming an obsession that hinders their growth and ability to move forward. The reader watches as these complex, multifaceted characters stagger under the weight of a probable, unresolved crime in their midst, each hobbled by this singular event that has irrevocably altered the course of their lives.
Landay writes well, with considerable depth, nuance and character development. We truly get to know the people who populate this story, experiencing their anguish and dreading the revelations that they eventually uncover.
Landay’s book is an enveloping read that packs an emotional punch. It is luminous, dark, heartbreaking, powerful and redemptive. Highly recommended.

First book by this author for me was Defending Jacob (‘12 - Read ‘13 - 5 Stars). I also loved the mini series on Apple TV. It’s been 11 years since his last book. The opening pages of the book surprised me; I thought I was reading the author’s opening comments and it was the actual start of the book. Very original. I forgot how much I liked his writing; it feels like I’m having a conversation with a friend. So smooth ! I liked the different family members narrating whole sections of the book and not just individual chapters. This author is a great storyteller. He brings the reader right into this family’s murder drama stirring complex feelings about parental care and lies.

An extraordinarily detailed novel, meticulously researched, the characters are exceptionally well described, and the mystery is documented like the accounting of a true crime. I found myself swept through the book from the very first page to the last, completely absorbed. Not only is the author an incredibly gifted writer but he's also worked as a DA, and his knowledge, experience, and qualifications are a real asset to the novel. Whereas some authors use such careers to info-dump, Landay peppers it into the text to aid the reader's understanding.

The plot is perfectly plotted, and the story nuanced. It's not just about a missing woman, but a wife and mother, the children she's left behind who have every reason to blame their dad for killing their mum, the husband and father who claims innocence but appears to have a dark side, the detective who can't let the case go, the sister who is convinced she was murdered by her husband, and the DA who won't forget because justice hasn't been served.

I loved the revelation at the end too. I loved everything about this book. It's what us authors strive for, and nobody could have done it better.

This is one of the most gripping novels I have read in a long while, not only gripping but at times really heartbreaking. This novel is part legal thriller, part family drama with different timelines and told from four different perspectives. It centers around the question "Did Dan Larkin kill his wife?" and describes the devastating impact doubt and suspicion can have on a family. You have to read right until the end of the book to get the answer to the question above! Highly recommended!!!!
