Up to Speed is a roadmap and toolbox for athletes of all ages. Every coach should read it and discuss it with their athletes. I wish I had been able to read this book while I was competing.” —Kara Goucher, Olympic long-distance runner and author of The Longest Race

How the latest science can help women achieve their athletic potential

Over the last fifty years, women have made extraordinary advances in athletics. More women than ever are playing sports and staying active longer. Whether they’re elite athletes looking for an edge or enthusiastic amateurs, women deserve a culture of sports that helps them thrive: training programs and equipment designed to work with their bodies, as well as guidelines for nutrition and injury prevention that are based in science and tailored to their lived experience.

Yet too often the guidance women receive is based on research that fails to consider their experiences or their bodies. So much of what we take as gospel about exercise and sports science is based solely on studies of men.

The good news is, this is finally changing. Researchers are creating more inclusive studies to close the gender data gap. They’re examining the ways women can boost athletic performance, reduce injury, and stay healthy.

Sports and health journalist Christine Yu disentangles myth and gender bias from real science, making the case for new approaches that can help women athletes excel at every stage of life, from adolescence to adulthood, through pregnancy, menopause, and beyond. She explains the latest research and celebrates the researchers, athletes, and advocates pushing back against the status quo and proposing better solutions to improve the active and athletic lives of women and girls.

Review

Praise for Up to Speed:

"Illuminating. . . . Yu’s overview of the many ways women athletes are underserved enrages, and her mastery of the scientific literature impresses. This is a valuable contribution to the growing science on women in sports." —
Publishers Weekly

"A brisk, well-researched study of athletic performance.” —Kirkus

“This important distillation of the science underlying women's sports performance illuminates what we've known all along—that we're different but not lesser.” —Bonnie Tsui, author of
Why We Swim

“Christine Yu deftly skewers the failings of current sports science research, but also finds encouraging signs that the experiences of women athletes are finally being taken seriously. A meticulously reported, often surprising, and ultimately uplifting read.” —Alex Hutchinson, author of
Endure

“More women are playing sports than ever before, and yet our understanding of how they can best excel remains woefully inadequate. Christine Yu’s book convincingly argues that it’s time for exercise and sports research to include women.” —Christie Aschwanden, author of Good to Go

“This book is a deeply important asset for building a better future for women in sport. Yu gives context to the experiences of so many female athletes and calls for a future where female athletes are studied, supported and valued equally.” —Kate Courtney, Olympian and World Champion mountain-bike racer

Up to Speed is a roadmap and toolbox for athletes of all ages. Every coach should read it and discuss it with their athletes. I wish I had been able to read this book while I was competing.” —Kara Goucher, Olympic long-distance runner and author of The Longest Race

“An essential read for all of those women (and men!) trying to navigate the world of sex and gender difference in sport, nutrition, exercise and adaptations.” —Dr. Stacy Sims, author ofRoar

“Christine Yu goes to great pains to point out the inaccuracy of false narratives about female inadequacy in sports. She celebrates the brave and unsung scientists and advocates who have derailed these claims.” —Carole A. Oglesby, Trustee Emeritus, Women’s Sports Foundation and Professor Emeritus, Temple University

“A must read for anyone interested in women athletes—their healthcare, their performance, what we know, what we don't know, and why there is so much more that needs to be done to get female athletes the care, resources and answers they need. Thank you, Christine, for this terrific resource!” —Kathryn Ackerman, MD, MPH, Founder of the Female Athlete Conference and Associate Professor, Harvard Medical School

It has been about a week since I finished UP TO SPEED, and I've found myself often thinking through the various topics and research and conclusions that Christine Yu included in her debut book. As I wrote about her book, "It has been a while since an audiobook has had me actually looking forward to being stuck in Southern California traffic, but @cyu888's incredible UP TO SPEED, narrated by the masterful @CindyKay_VO, has me doing just that. Compelled me to buy the hardcopy for my wife even!"

First, a note on Christine's book; her writing compels your attention, but in such an engaging way that you cannot help but learn and appreciate her points. I can't express enough gratitude for such mastery. More than once since reading Up to Speed, I've found myself in conversations where I'll interject, "Did you know that..." and proceed to recount something I gleaned from her book.

Second, a note on Cindy Kay's narration. She is a consummate professional. I'll be the first to admit that I've listened to (and, like with Up to Speed, been made aware of) many books simply because she narrates them with such poise and aplomb. I owe her debts of gratitude for that exposure.

In short, Christine highlights a too long neglected disparity between how we treat all current and former athletes, and offers hope that the knowledge gap is at least narrowing. I can't wait to read what she turns her talents to next.

This book covered a lot of ground. The author does a really good job of explaining the issues without getting political or emotional. The science comes first and the issues are discussed with stories and quotes from real women athletes. Each chapter addresses a particular topic. My favorite was the chapter on sports bras. I had no idea they weren’t invented until the 1970s. The book is heavily slanted toward ultra athletes - people winning marathons, setting records, competing in the Olympics, etc. I think there could have been more discussion of every day women participating in sports.

Many times in the book the author says things like “people who menstruate”, “people with a uterus” and then on the next page she says “women”. But the word for men is always “men”. She claims to advocate for women in this book but then uses woke terminology that refuses to acknowledge female words like “women” consistently through the book. This inconsistency bothered me and seemed to be contradict the very message the authors message. Adult females are not “people who birth”, they are women. Do not erode us by diminishing female terminology.

As the father of daughters involved in various sports, I really found this book fascinating. The author really opened my eyes to the differences between female and male athletes in a way I never really thought about, aside from the normal stereotypes. It certainly opened my admittedly "old school" eyes.

I appreciated the way the author delved into the research behind women in athletics. Her writing style is engaging without being heavy and I found myself very much looking forward to seeing what came next in the book.

I highly recommend this book for the parents of any females participating in sports, it will really give you a new and important perspective.

Once in a blue moon, I find a book that I can’t put down. This is that book. I devoured this cover to cover and didn’t want it to end!

Christine Yu seamlessly combines science, interviews, and case studies into a very readable and approachable look at women in sport. This should be an essential addition to every athlete’s library - guys and gals and non-binary pals alike.

This was written in an incredibly inclusive manner and I just can’t say enough positive things. Buy this!! Read this! Share this!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Future is Female
Reviewed in Canada on May 23, 2023
Yu pulls together extensive research to share that there really is a dearth of research on females in sport. She discusses the challenges and the wrongs with 'shrink it and pink it' and builds upon Dr Stacy Simms work of 'women are not small men.' She shares with readers where males and females have similarities but also speaks to the nuances, and the lack of understanding in these differences between males and females. Using a bio, psycho, social lens Yu also nuances sex and gender, again teasing out the differences where we start with a lot of shared sameness. This book is for everyone, not just girls and women, not just those that coach girls and women, but for all everyone across all disciplines to help us think critically about how we shape a better future for not just girls and women but for all genders in everything we do in life.
