Freezing Order: A True Story of Russian Money Laundering, State-Sponsored Murder, and Surviving Vladimir Putin's Wrath Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 8,931 ratings

Following his explosive #1 New York Times bestseller, Red Notice, Bill Browder returns with another gripping thriller chronicling how he exposed Vladimir Putin's campaign to steal and launder hundreds of billions of dollars from Russia—and how Putin is willing to kill anyone who stands in his way.

When Browder’s young Russian lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, was beaten to death in a Moscow jail in 2009, Browder cast aside his business career and made it his life’s mission to pursue justice for Sergei. One of the first steps of that mission was to uncover who had killed Sergei and profited from the $230 million corruption scheme that he had exposed. As Browder and his team tracked the money that flowed out of Russia—through the Baltics and Cyprus and on to Western Europe and the Americas—they discovered that Vladimir Putin himself was one of the beneficiaries of the crime.

After Western law enforcement agencies began freezing the money, Putin retaliated. He and his cronies set honey traps for Browder, hired agents to chase him around the globe, murdered more of Browder’s Russian allies, and enlisted some of the West’s top lawyers and politicians in an attempt to bring Browder down. Putin will stop at nothing to protect his wealth and power. As Freezing Order reveals, Browder’s campaign was a main impetus for Putin’s intervention in the 2016 US presidential election.

At once a financial caper, an international adventure, and a passionate plea for justice, Freezing Order is a stirring morality tale about how one man can take on one of the most dangerous and ruthless villains in the world.

Just got the book, have not read yet but disappointed in the cover. It is hard cover but with paper wrapping. I hoped for the hardcover itself to be the cover, it looks nicer.

It's so true life supasses fantasy and the story written in this book is proof of that. Read like a spy novel but it's a true life struggle. Very interesting

Bill Browder second book is a worthy follow-up to Red Notice, his chronicle of his life and times investing in Russia before coming up against the modern Russian kleptocracy (to borrow from William Gibson’s “The Peripheral” and “Agency”: the klept). One would think you couldn’t make this stuff up - but the klept won’t stop trying, attempting every conceivable way to frame, coerce, bribe, threaten, and deter Bill Browder and the cause of freedom and transparency from shedding light on Russia’s flow of dirty money.

Mr Browder is an adept author, keeping his readers engaged, filling in all sorts of details and leaving out the boring ones, as his quest towards the passage ever more Magnitsky acts takes him around the world. He encounters politicians, law enforcement, spooks, and an incredible range of real people in this endeavor. Browder is, was, and has been dogged by the Russian regime the whole way, who exert a baffling amount of effort in the their crusade to enable the klept’s money laundering.

If it wasn’t backed up by hundreds of sources - news articles, audio, video, pictures, charts, and more from the most reputable of old-world journalism strongholds like Berlingske, the Washington Post, and the New York Times as well as the titans of new-media, Politco, Slate, Buzzfeed, and so many others, it would be unbelievable. But more so than many other works in this field, it is substantiated, over and over again. First and foremost in the quest for truth, Bellingcat and the OCCRP hold the Russian regime accountable, calling out every one of their lies and underscoring the urgency of Bill Browder’s work.

In the final chapters, as part of investigation into a European bank, he puts a top-line figure on the total flow of Russian corrupt proceeds flowing out, on the figure for money stolen from ordinary Russians by a broken, illicit regime, and it is staggering. Anyone who worries about the continued rise, in the early 21st century, of corrupt & brutal authoritarian regimes ought to read this book. Look to the Global Magnitsky Campaign’s success hitting greedy tyrants where it hurts, and know that we can still win this thing.

Written in an easy flowing manner which kept me riveted. Putin and his Mafia are displayed as forceful without feeling for the man in the street, power hungry, leading by lying and trampling on those standing for justice,as well as money scavengers who taught most leaders in Africa how to empty government coffers. Bill Browder is to be commended for his tenacity in pursuing not only the wrongdoings done to Russians in the name of justice but also the heartless clamp down on innocent people. Freezing Order is a good read for anyone interested in the exposing of global money laundering as never before!

I read Bill's original work Red Notice and was captivated by the story. I was elated when I saw he had written a second piece that outlined more of the issues encountered. Highly recommend for this who enjoyed Red Notice and/or for this who are interested in international non-fiction/journalism.

If you entertained any thoughts that Vladimir Putin and his gang of goons - murderers, extortionists, thugs, liars, have been misunderstood and maligned, then read this book and straighten out your thinking. From the time of Ivan the Terrible, through the abuses of the Romanov dynasty, Lenin, Stalin and the other Soviet henchmen, and now pitifully carried on by Vladimir Vladimirovich - all have ruled ruthlessly and with a single purpose: to maintain power at any cost, to steal from their own and from the West. Putin has asserted that the Russians are different, that they have not been corrupted by western values, carry on the true orthodox Christian religion. Bill Browder's "Freezing Order" shows just how right Putin is, that Russia is different from the West. In the west there is rule of law, respect for individual rights, and the basic notion that the state exists of the people, by the people, for the people. In Browder's book you will learn what Putin's state stands for. And if "Freezing Order" hasn't quite convinced you, just check your favorite news source (as long as it is not the anti-reality Russian agitprop) about the "military action of liberation" in Ukraine. There are heroes aplenty in the book, men and women who have stood up to Putin's thugs and paid the ultimate price. Browder's book reads like a dramatic Kafka nightmare - thrilling, horrifying, almost beyond belief, yet true. Must reading to understand Putin's twisted mind, and the efforts by gifted and dedicated men and women to shed light on the truth.

This is a well-written memoir by Bill Browder, a companion piece to his very successful "Red Notice" (which relates his time in Russia and the many difficulties and dangers he faced developing a hedge fund there). Now, Mr. Browder continues the story of his battles with the Putin-led government and his (and his allies') continuing efforts to fight corruption, all the while looking over his shoulder to make sure he's not "rendered" back to Moscow to face trial there. It's a David v. Goliath story of money laundering, murder, intimidation, civil and criminal litigation on a worldwide scale (complete with lawyers' betrayals), and the inability or failure of various governments to protect its citizens. It's especially timely in light of the war in Ukraine. I read it in two sittings and found it both absorbing and chilling.

Excellent sequel to Red Notice. One of the best non fiction reads. The afterword is particularly well written in the context of the current political tug of war around military aid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Money Laundering, Murder & Putin

Excellent book about Putin's Russia and the course of period campaigning for the Magnitsky Acts. At times it reads like a thriller.

Fortunately for the lay person, it is not about the technical details of the Russian regime's money laundering but the process of exposing it and Browder's personal experience of campaigning and being harassed. He therefore makes it very interesting to follow.

Highly recommend if you are trying to find out more about Putin's Russia in these dangerous times.

5.0 out of 5 stars One more direct chronicle of being a target of the Kremlin’s wrath

Browder has had a professional life that in past epochs only extraordinary adventurers could dream of. Getting into a lane the monstrous authorities of Earth’s biggest country don’t want anyone to be and peek into what they’ve been doing for a long time (with impunity) has been a somersault. And he’s managed to overcome the dangers that destroyed a gifted and fair lawyer by the name of Magnitsky. A must read, even if you’re familiar with Red Notice.
