Learn to make every moment a once-in-a-lifetime experience with this definitive guide to the Japanese art of ichigo ichie, from the bestselling authors of Ikigai.
‘Ikigai urges individuals to simplify their lives by pursuing what sparks joy for them’ (Marie Kondo)
Every moment in our life happens only once, and if we let it slip away, we lose it forever-an idea captured by the Japanese phrase ichigo ichie. Often used to convey that the encounter is unique and special, it is a tenet of Zen Buddhism and is attributed to a sixteenth-century master of the Japanese tea ceremony, or ‘ceremony of attention’, whose intricate rituals compel us to focus on the present moment.
From this age-old concept comes a new kind of mindfulness. In The Book of Ichigo Ichie, you will learn to use all five senses to anchor yourself in the present.
Every one of us contains a key that can open the door to attention, harmony with others, and love of life. And that key is ichigo ichie.
I'm the author of several Japanese culture books: The Magic of Japan, Ikigai the Japanese Secret for a Long and Happy Life, The Book of Ichigo Ichie, Shinrinyoku, The Ikigai Journey and A Geek in Japan.
I LOVE reading and writing.
Autor de los libros sobre cultura japonesa: La Magia de Japón, Ikigai, Ichigo Ichie, Shinrinyoku, Un Geek en Japón.
It is an easy read, but needs some effort to apply the following to daily life. In general, be present and cherish the presence.
Ten Rules of Ichigo Ichie 1. Don't postpone special moments 2. Live as if this were going to happen only once in your life 3. Dwell in the present 4. Do something you've never done before. 5. Practice zazen 6. Apply mindfulness to your five sense 7. Notice coincidences 8. Make every gathering a party. 9. If you don't like what there is, make something different. 10. Be a hunter of special moments
I started reading this book to calm myself during times of emotional turmoil. Thus, this may not come across as a review, but a constellation of feelings that this book evoked in me. The country is in a state of unrest witnessing the gory dance of death and destruction. People are unable to hold on to any ounce of positivity. It actually makes you feel a little guilty for enjoying a fleeting moment of frivolity in times like this. But we all need to do what we need to do to preserve our sanity, even if it to help others in dire times.
Ichigo Ichie is the art of practicing how to stay in the moment; how to consider every moment, every opportunity a beautiful treasure. We have read quotes like "absence makes the heart grow fonder", or "we do not realise the worth of someone/something until it is gone". Which is why you need to practice Ichigo Ichie to know, to realise that what you are experiencing at the moment, may not ever happen again.
Even if you eat the same meal at the place on two consecutive days, your mindset will be different on both the days. The weather may be different on both the days. You may be served by a different waiter or sit on a different table. No moment in time can be exactly replicated. Therefore, it is important to acknowledge that no moment will ever occur again.
Beautiful things in life are fleeting and must not be postponed. I am sure there are a lot of things in this book that can be taken as the key message but for me, it will be this. Life seldom turns out to be how you planned it. The uncertainty, the transient nature of things is perhaps what makes them more precious. We are often caught up in our past or dreaded about the future. In all this time traveling that we do in our heads, we are unable to pay attention to what is right in front of us. We hear but we don't listen, we look but we don't see, we feel but I don't think we experience. Appreciating what is here and now, is so much more important than spending time in your head. If we are able to achieve this state of Ichigo Ichie, we may actually find immense joy even in the mundane tasks of our everyday routine.
This book is an easy to read guide to understand, and practice the concept of Ichigo Ichie [much like Ikigai, another gem by the authors] which will make you look at the issues at hand a little differently than how you have been viewing them, if nothing else.
I wish that I had words to express just how much I adored this book.
Reading this book is like taking a breath of fresh air, and I'm not kidding when I say I felt zen in every single way as I made my way through this book. And I can only imagine that our reality would be a lovely place to live in if only everyone practised the concept of ichigo ichie.
It's probably too late for me to start learning Japanese, but it's at the top of my list if I end up in Language School in heaven.
I'm fascinated with languages. I'm especially fascinated with words in languages that do not appear to have a good equivalent in English.
One of these words is ichigo ichie.
I ran across ichigo ichie last week in a book called, appropriately, The Book of Ichigo Ichie. I'm fascinated with ideas about happiness, and ichigo ichie is a word that centers on happiness. It is a Japanese word that means the art of making the most of every moment, and that's what this little book is all about.
The authors begin by reminding us that life is impermanent. My wonderful friend Diana passed away this week. She was my age. I know that life is impermanent.
The authors share the secrets they have found for making the most of every moment from the Japanese---paying attention...listening...looking...touching...tasting...smelling...returning to now...being mindful...slowing down.
Here I go. I'm making the most of every moment. Starting now.
This was an intensely calming book. Focusing on the moment, keeping your emotions in check, and taking time to really listen, The Book of Ichigo Ichie suggests that in the midst of this fast-paced, consumer-based society, it is more than worth it to take a breath and honor this one moment. I tend to live in the future and the past, so this book was a great reminder to really just take it all in, right here and now. To try to find contentment, to not want for more. I think I'll be taking a lot of lessons from this book and applying them to my own life--the authors preach a kind of living and lifestyle that I myself want to achieve but am having a hard time doing, personally.
What I also appreciated about this book was their glimpse into other spiritualities and ways of living, showing that there's no "one way" to adhere to ichigo ichie, but in fact many different ways that intersect in order to create a zen, simplistic, and peaceful life.
I'd definitely recommend this to those who find enlightenment in Marie Kondo's works--find what sparks joy in your life and find that joy in a single moment.
Live the moment like ichigo ichie...
আমরা "Be in the moment" হয়ে সময় কাটাতে ভুলে গেছি।
We should be in the moment...
A cute little book that inspires/instructs in how and why to focus on the present moment. The writing is soothing, and even though I've read many books on mindfulness, I found some useful bits to take away.
Are you angry/sad? You're living in the past. Come back/wake up.
Are you afraid? You're living in the future. Come back.
The concept itself of ichigo ichie is wonderful; the idea being that one trains their mind to appreciate the present and not dwell on the past or future. However, this book is so poorly written that I can’t give it the 3 stars I would like.
It’s written as though the author was running out of time and trying meet the publishing deadline. It’s a strange mix of lists, random and irrelevant anecdotes, and meditation practice posed as fact. Each new passage was jarring to read and each time the authors would go on a tangent about Steve Jobs or some such, I felt myself becoming less and less connected with the message. The writing hardly goes into any actual detail of mediation practice and instead focuses on superfluous details that most readers would know going into this: I didn’t need to read 5 chapters about what the 5 senses are (I wish I were exaggerating here. I know what sight is but I don’t know how it connected to the underlying message).
I could have read this same content with a higher standard of writing in a listicle from Cosmo.
Keeping the singular nature of each moment in mind is an important principle to live by and can have great impact on one's life. Based on the book's title, tagline, and introduction, I thought this book was going to be a poetic exploration of this concept.
Instead, this book is was an aggregation of loosely related anecdotes, stories, summaries of other books, and modern pseudoscience, all with very little poeticism.
The exploration in each chapter was incredibly superficial and read like fluff you might find in a moderately interesting Reddit post. This is the Malcolm-Gladwellification of book writing at its worst.
A minimalistic text on a tenet of Zen philosophy that emphasizes living, celebrating, and treasuring every moment by embracing the impermanence.
I find myself with a lot of questions after reading, which may indicate incompleteness of the book, or the answers are to be discovered through self-reflection and practice of the art.
Although I appreciated the little tidbits of cultural information, it lowkey felt imposing. I feel like how one be present is subjective, here they make it sound like I have to be *this* or a certain way in order to consider myself present. Idk if that even made sense but it is what it isss 🥱

Ichigo ichie!
Ichigo Ichie - that this exact moment where I’m typing thee words into Goodreads, and smiling, this exact moment will never come back. That there’s beauty in impermanence, and therefore why not just be fully in this moment.
Carpe diem is the closest Latin, and by relation English, expression of Ichigo Ichie. But what made Ichigo Ichie come alive for me was in the way that Garcia and Miralles have explained it. Never preachy, but lots of ideas, ways to be “Ichigo Ichie.”
So much of the book resonated deeply, but if I had to share one thing that really came home to me, it was “you are not your thoughts.” A part of the mindfulness and meditation that drive Ichigo Ichie, is to allow every thought into the mind, without getting attached to it. Without fighting it. Thoughts may be good, bad, embarrassing, joyful, and the way to deal with this variety of thought is to remember that “you are not your thoughts” :-)
