Great way of teaching the history and understanding of ethics to a layman like myself. Crash course intro to this topic was much needed. Great buy!

I read this book as supplemental reading in a college ethics class. It helped me grasp the concepts and added to my knowledge of the topics that were discussed in class.

I got this for a family member who is interested in studying philosophy, but had difficulty following my notes and books from college.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit incomprehensible.

Ethics 101 sumarizes important thoughts by Western and Eastern luminaries on the concept of ethics but the author should have used a much simpler language which would have made this book interesting to read. One might need to re-read some key points so as to get the understanding of author's point of view.
The book starts with an introduction to ancient Greek philosophers, their take on Ethics going deeper into various Greek schools. Further the key Western ideas on Ethics such as Consequential Ethics, Deontological Ethics, Virtue Ethics has been discussed. A short chapter on Eastern Ethics from those of Buddha, Taoism, Confucius, Ibn Sina, Ibn Miskawayh, Al-Ghazali has been included as well.
The best chapter seems to be the one containing negative views on Ethics from great thinkers such as Niccolo Machiavelli to Ludwig Wittgenstein.
Overall this book was difficult to read and comprehend but nevertheless is a good source of all key ethical concepts.

I'm half way thru this - having only got it last week! It is very well written - clear, concise with succinct definitions of major movements in Ethics. A joy to read - heartily recommend it - one of the best on the subjects I have read.

Covers Western thought on ethics, would have been good if Eastern thoughts from India, China and Japan were also included.
