I don't know why I keep reading Self Help. I hate the ideas surrounding the "Laws of this and the Laws of that". Mate these are not scientific truths these are just loose conjecture at best and I can't believe people base their lifes choices and actions on such things. I think there are some true cause and effect outcomes of the choices we make and pushing ourselves to do our best is certainly in our best interest but creating arbitrary laws to "explain" such things comes across as psuedo science.

DO NOT GET THE AUDIO OF THIS BOOK UNLESS YOU HAVE NO ISSUES WITH MOUTH SOUNDS! This book is fantastic. Brian Tracy is an amazing coach for time management, goal setting, and building confidence, and I'd recommend ANYTHING he writes to anyone building a business. BUT, the audio for this book is full of mouth sounds. I endured them for 5 hours . . . but was so disappointed in the recording that I actually asked, and received, a refund. Will always be fan of Mr. Tracy. Just not on audio.

This one had its moments, but ultimately, it did not resonate with me...

Author Brian Tracy is a Canadian-American motivational public speaker and self-development author. He is the author of over eighty books that have been translated into dozens of languages.

Brian Tracy:

Alarm bells went off for me early on here, with Tracy dropping many black and white statements. The book is peppered with writing like this: "Whenever you ___, you ALWAYS ___," and "Everyone who ___ always ___."
For example; he writes:
"If you sow positive, optimistic, uplifting thoughts in your mind, you will reap positive, optimistic uplifting events and experiences in your life. It cannot be otherwise."
So, if I think positive thoughts, I can "think" my way out of whatever disaster I face? I get what he is driving at, but this writing needed to be more measured. It reeks of pop self-help, IMHO.

Also, I didn't really like the author's writing style, to be honest. I found it to be too jumpy, and not really down-to-earth. It bordered on sounding like evangelizing and woo-peddling.
Sadly, I also found the formatting of the book to be poorly done, as well. The narrative jumps around too often, without establishing and expanding upon the points raised.

Even more gratingly, there were far too many dubious "laws" of this and that, liberally dropped throughout. Just a few that a covered here:
The Law of Indirect Effort
The Law of Attraction
The Law of Correspondence
The Law of Concentration
The Law of Substitution.
And it kept going like that...

I don't generally like this kind of writing. I found many of his quotes to be bordering on questionable, to downright silly and nonsensical. Just two examples:
"True self-confidence does not come from positive wishing or positive hoping or positive thinking. It comes from positive knowing based on having proven to yourself, over and over again, that you have what it takes to get from wherever you are to wherever you want to go."
And:
"Your mind is structured in such a way that you cannot write down a goal clearly on paper (not on a computer screen!) without simultaneously having the ability to somehow attain it."

What ridiculous quotes... Many people do things that they have never done before, or have been done by other people. The second quote is even more ludicrous. So, if I write down my "goal" of winning this week's $50 million lottery jackpot, I will achieve that goal?
Most of the writing here followed along those lines. It definitely needed to be more measured and nuanced. This book came off like a late-night infomercial at times...

**************************

There was some good info presented here, but for the reasons mentioned above, I did not enjoy it as much as I could have.
2.5 stars.

I wish I had read this book much earlier in my life. It goes far beyond helping overcome moments of lack of self-confidence. Brian Tracy’s book is a great guide for life - setting life values and goals straight and acting accordingly.

"You will learn to approach the biggest challenges and opportunities of your life completely unafraid, convinced of your ability to accomplish anything you put your mind to."

I used to be like that, then I got kicked in the face a couple of times and couldn't figure out how to get back up, and then I got kicked a couple of more times when I was down.

If I was to write a book on self confidence this is exactly the book I would write. It's near perfect. It's exactly what I needed to get that confident self out of hiding.

The book covers maintaining a positive mindset and guarding every single one of your thoughts, as well as finding out what you're good at. I suppose many people don't know this. There is also a series of exercises on setting goals and writing them down, which I've found to be very important.

One thing I did not like was the perfectionist, "don't be soft on yourself" advice in a small portion at the end of the book. That is the exact kind of thinking and attitude that has landed me where I'm at today. Not good. It actually contradicts the beginning philosophies and advice in the beginning of the book.

This is one of those books that I would tell everyone to read. You have to apply the information for it to work. A lot of people won't understand the magnitude of the advice and exercises in this book, because they've heard them but never actually implemented them. I've implemented them before, and if you do them they WILL change your life.

I don't know if my rating is depentent on the wrong timing for reading this book. It came out in 2012 and I have just discovered it now (gift from a dear friend). After having read many books of this kind over the years It felt like the same stuff in different words (maybe not even so different). Some statements like : "repeating what succesful people do is the perfect strategy to replicate their outcomes" made me want to burn the book right away, but maybe the target is those who have just discovered the genre and need this kind of "easy" recipes to feel motivated. The only thing I liked and which should be implemented in every personal development book is: shortness and clear paragraphs titles.

This book was given to me with a different cover and I thought it was a different book. In 70 years of reading the first time I think that ever happened

But it was not apparent until the end.

This book was not read thinking the ultimate goal was self confidence but I found that the means and measures used to build self confidence in this book were based upon goals with few questions of ethics - the goal was just success.

And it was based upon really - it seemed - selling or performing in an atmosphere where the opinion of others was the means to success - not accomplishment - not the book for a production person or an engineer or a person creating real wealth - a Bill Gates or Steve Jobs or John D. Rockefeller.

It would work for some people but I am not sure I would want to break bread with those people or have them as an in-law.

Save your time. there are lots of good books for ways to work for success and happiness without making the sacrifices to human nature this book seems to ask.

It's a nice quick read if you're looking for some cheerleading

I didn't quite enjoy the over "you can do it" pep talks and I felt like they overshadowed some very solid points. However I do get why some might find this encouraging and quite useful.

The book does present excellent ideas. Even though some might feel obvious when you read them, the way they are layed out is quite impressive.

- The most important thing for you is to develop an unshakable-high self-confidence that makes you an unstoppable force of nature. Your job is to take every step toward making your life better. You are you and will be you for the rest of your life. Thus, like yourself and act like you are a millionaire man. Become irresistible and unafraid in every area of your life.

- Men who know that they are smarter than the masses (average) have visible self-confidence. They behave, walk, talk, act, and dress differently. Successful people talk with themselves positively and have a better sense of attitude. If you talk positively with yourself and interpret events happening to you as such, you will be a positive and happier person. Do not get angry about tiny things but instead understand the other person and continue your day. They have an attitude of certainty in themselves, which causes them to stand out in any group. They have a deep sense of self-worth and self-confidence which is truly evident to everyone around them. People like this, have much courage and are not afraid. They pursue their purpose, no matter what. There are no limitations, just follow your heart.

- Speak out. Speak with self-confidence.

- Your GOAL SHOULD BE TO BE THE BEST. Your job is to get into the top 10 percent, then the top 5 percent, and then the top 1 percent. Your goal should be to make people recognize you as being the best in your field. Pay any price, and overcome any obstacle necessary to become excellent.

- You need to develop: desire, decision, determination, and discipline. You must really want to be successful and have a true desire for it. Talk about it, think about it, and do it. Decide to work on yourself until you reach an unshakable self-confidence and accomplishment. Determine to continue on your path, no matter how fast the progress is. The voice in your head and friends are going to push you back into your comfort zone but do not let them. Discipline is truly important. It is to do what is important, no matter what, whether you feel like it or not. It is to do the hard things when you want to do the easy things.

- You are stupid when taking stupid actions, and smart when taking smart actions. If you are not improving, you are getting worse.

- Analyze yourself and past experiences, both good and bad. Think about the experience and reflect on what you did good and what you did badly. Then, imagine you doing a similar thing in the future and manifest that you are going to accomplish it. If you are taking an exam, close your eyes for a few seconds, breathe, and see yourself acing the exam. Also, if you are going to meet a new person or have a public speech, breathe and see yourself completing it perfectly. See yourself as calm, intelligent, and with confidence.

- Expect failures, obstacles, and difficulties and face them with confidence. Minimize these but still acknowledge that they will happen, no matter what. Face them and look them straight into their eyes.

- Ask someone you trust for help and guidance. What advice can people give you? Ask them what they believe are your strengths and weaknesses. Be as detailed as possible. Then, work toward improving your weaknesses and focus on your strengths. Also, acknowledge that your weakness in one field can be a strength in another. Sometimes you can get tips or insights from other people, that you have not yet seen in yourself.

- We settle for far less than we are capable of doing. We relax, are comfortable, watch TV, and sleep in. These habits are formed and then have an immense effect on your life. Most people waste their time by socializing with people they do not like and watching countless hours of TV, to then finally convince themselves to do something productive.

- The first step is to like yourself and remind yourself of your amazingness every day. After this, you can like everyone else, people you meet and greet. Give them compliments and be positive. Make them laugh and spread happiness.

- Get away from people who complain and are negative all the time. Make it a game to say nice things about everything and everyone.

- Take a second to reflect on your life. See what you do on a regular basis and write down what roles you have. This could be a footballer, big brother, politician, etc. Write down everything you do, and which skills you truly have.
