Passing It On: Growing Your Future Leaders

Rate this book
Leaders everywhere, in arenas big and small, struggle with the desire and, frankly, the need to make sure their vision for the organization they have created or grown continues regardless of circumstances. And the question "what will be my legacy?" is a question all people ask themselves. Myles Munroe has observed that the tendency among leaders is to deal with this question as serious circumstances or retirement loom. Further, it is his belief that this is one of the most important decisions a leader will ever make.

This book is a wakeup call. Myles Munroe wants all leaders to focus on building the right team for the future and to make it a top priority because the process is not a quick one. Properly mentoring the right people to ensure the continuation of an organization is actually a process that must be woven into that organization over a span of years or even decades.

Chapter topics discussed include

PASSING IT ON shows how to use the concept of mentoring within an organization to value the distinct talents and abilities of the individuals. Mentoring is the pathway to developing leaders from within; leaders who are in line with the goals of the organization; leaders who are most likely to adopt and carry a vision forward.

A mentor can change the mentee's life in a day, saving that person a lifetime of trial and error. ~ Myles Munroe, "Passing It On", p. 51

This book encourages people who are in leadership roles to begin to mentor someone to take their place. Myles explains that often people in leadership protect their roles and never mentor someone to lead after they are gone. This causes their vision to never succeed them. Myles says, that true "success" comes from "succession".

This book explains how to mentor and how to be a mentee. It also outlines how to succeed in being a mentor and how to succeed in being a mentee. There is much wisdom that can be gleaned from this book if you are mentoring others or being mentored.

Although HIGHLY repetitive, I believe this is one of the most important books on leadership ever written. Why? Because of the authors perspective, level of knowledge and sheer importance of this rarely mentioned subject.

Along with the amazingly powerful core message of this book I also love the practical way the author describes: How to choose a successor, how to mentor, and how a mentee/mentor relationship should be structured and carried out. I consider these principles pure gold and were worth my time reading this book alone. This book will be very helpful to me in the future as I will require it to be read by anyone that would like my direct mentorship.

REVIEW

The book centers guidelines which will be beneficial for upcoming leaders on leading effectively, how a true leader successfully leads the followers.

Myles Munroe, the author, emphasized on the need for leaders to identify and begin to mentor someone for the replacement of the position he or she is occupying because that is what makes a visionary leader. It is necessary for a leader to groom and instill all the wisdom he can offer to the successor.

The greatest obligation of true leadership is to transfer the deposit of knowledge, wealth, experience, influence, relationships, and understanding to the next generation.~ Myles Munroe

True leaders transfer their knowledge, cultivate the curiosity of their mentees and encourage them to ask questions because the failure to mentor a successor actually cancels leadership. He brought to my notice that your influence will not continue in buildings or bank accounts but your influence will continue in the people you invested in. Leaders don't manage people, instead they develop people.

Passion makes people buy into your vision and help them to know that it is worth pursuing. A leader does not look for followers because the followers are attracted to a leader's passion. The whole idea behind mentoring is that you are looking forward to producing someone greater than you. Knowing when to leave is essential and critical in leadership and if there's any mismanagement in the delicate it affects the years of hard work.

Mentoring and succession is not possible where there is no vision. A leader is expected to see more, see farther, and see what others cannot see. Leaders do not seek power but instead they seek to empower. He explained the responsibilities of mentor towards the mentee, the three phases of life

Authenticity is what makes a true leader, the most difficult thing about being a leader is giving up leadership, leaving it to someone else. It is a wrong place to choose your successor on a sickbed. He brought to my attention that kinship doesn't qualify people to succeed you, even if you decide that your relative should succeed you then pick the ones who love you.

The mentee learns through interaction with the mentor and through the environments, experiences, and opportunities which the mentor provides. I realized that being with a mentor is more important than receiving instruction from the mentor because association transforms life. You cannot mentor a person if he doesn't associate with you.True mentorship involves face-to-face, direct, and interactive communication.

He outlined the responsibilities of mentor and mentee. You cannot lead people who do not trust you, and you cannot learn from someone. Leadership is measured by the success of your successors. Secure leaders provide opportunity for others to find and fulfill their God given purpose and reach their greatest potential. Whenever a void occurs in the succession of leadership, scattering and decentralization follow.

I am recommending this excellent book to Leaders, budding leaders who want to lead their followers effectively.
