11/22/63: A Novel Mass Market Paperback – January 26, 2016

4.5 out of 5 stars 254 ratings

Stephen King’s #1 bestselling time-travel novel—now a limited series on Hulu starring James Franco!

In Stephen King’s “most ambitious and accomplished” (NPR) and “extraordinary” (
USA TODAY) #1 New York Times bestselling novel, time travel has never been so believable. Or so terrifying.

Dallas, 11/22/63: Three shots ring out. President John F. Kennedy is dead.

Life can turn on a dime—or stumble into the extraordinary, as it does for Jake Epping, a high school English teacher in a Maine town. While grading essays by his GED students, Jake reads a gruesome, enthralling piece penned by janitor Harry Dunning: fifty years ago, Harry somehow survived his father’s sledgehammer slaughter of his entire family. Jake is blown away…but an even more bizarre secret comes to light when Jake’s friend Al, owner of the local diner, enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsession—to prevent the Kennedy assassination. How? By stepping through a portal in the diner’s storeroom, and into the era of Ike and Elvis, of big American cars, sock hops, and cigarette smoke…Finding himself in warmhearted Jodie, Texas, Jake begins a new life. But all turns in the road lead to a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald. The course of history is about to be rewritten…and become heart-stoppingly suspenseful.

The "used" book showed up and was in perfect condition, as if it had never been opened. The novel itself is different from what one would assume when reading Stephen King and it is fabulous. Not a scary/horror book.

I like to read but am not an avid reader but I tore through this 1,000+ page book in no time. Now I wish I could read it again for the first time.

Wow! Stephen King is an amazing storyteller. I wasn't sure if I would even like this book. I'm not a big fan of time travel stories, but King has done a fantastic job of making it believable. It really is a wonderful book without any of the supernatural elements that you might expect from King. I think it's a book that men and women would enjoy reading. Even though it's over 1,000 pages long, it is a quick read. The romance between Jake and Sadie added to the storyline. The ending was absolutely perfect. If it had ended any other way, it wouldn't have worked for me. 11/22/63 is a great book!

This is a really good novel, just short of a great one. King has created a fantastic and unique time travel mechanic, which really throws a different spin on what we usually run into in time travel stories, and even has a twist near the end that causes the reader along with the protagonist to change the way they had learned to look at things. The historical content is well-researched, immersive and detailed. King's protagonist is a relatable and interesting character, and many of the other characters are splendidly fleshed-out and memorable. Some Stephen King stories are definitely a skeleton, filled out with some tropes and an interesting or weird central theme. This one feels like he worked harder to create an extremely robust story.

Only one thing tempered my appreciation of this story, and that was its length. This book is huge! I started out reading it quite voraciously, and it speedily took off and went at a great pace. However, like the protagonist, who must wait several years to accomplish what he went to the past to do, I felt like I had to slog through a long period of life events, all of them good and many of them even electrifying, but the sheer bulk of time and events that passed between the beginning of the adventure and its end did wear on me. I actually put the book down for several months, although it was easy enough to pick it back up once an opportune camping trip gave me time to sit back and read, and I was once again hooked through the end. Honestly, I feel like any author less prolific and venerable than King would have been advised to cut a quarter of the book. Now, when I look at the content I would personally remove as extraneous, I realize that some characters and events which I quite enjoyed reading about would have to go, but I think it would still improve the novel overall.

I don't doubt that many bookworms, and Stephen King aficionados, would disagree with me about the book's length, and to them I say congratulations on having that much time and undivided attention for this book. I did enjoy it very much, would even say it captivated me with a spell the likes of which only King can dream up, but it was a serious venture to go from cover to cover. Very worth doing, however.

Not just one of my favorite Stephen King novels, but one of my favorite novels of all time period. ITS THAT GOOD! Its a thriller, a mystery, a love story, a historical novel, and a fantasy novel all in one, and it succeeds in all areas. The relationship between Jake and Sadie is the best love story King has written, and he makes the characters Lee Harvey & Marina Oswald come to life in a very believable way. This is King's best non-horror novel, and maybe his best period. A masterpiece from cover to cover.

I absolutely loved this book, it's a long one but I never really got bored reading it like I did a couple time reading It. It does slow down for a while but not to the point that it makes it hard to continue. When I was getting close to the end I though I had pretty good idea how it was going to end but I was wrong! King did an awesome job of keeping it unpredictable.

Love this book. It's Kong's another classic. It reminds me Dark Tower Saga. Definitely worth to read no matter if you are Stephen King fan, time travel fan or just want to read great book.

King's best book by far. It proves he is one of the finest novelists in America. The college crowd doesn't like his work, but then they tend to support works that are unreadable. Works written by English teachers who write for other English teachers.

Everything on this book is interesting. The way that King write is just awesome, and the characters seems to be real and some friend or a neighbour that you can really see. It's a big book, and I started with some suspicion, but the history captives you on such a good way...
Tip: if you like read and listening some music, I recommend you to listen some 50's songs... makes the reading better!

Was a little bit hesitant to dive into a King time travel story but I'm glad I finally did. Stormed through it in a single weekend, because I simply couldn't put it down. I would argue it's one of its best. An interesting take on time travel, that was rather thought provoking. Really makes you stop and think about the cause and effect of decisions you make every day. The ending was unexpected but touching. Historical details seem pretty well researched. If you're not into horror fret not as this is not a horror story.

I love the way this story mixes fiction and fact together with a love story thrown in for good measure.
Go back and change history, save the president and be the hero, fall in love ...
To find out how it goes you'll have to read this one yourself, step through the rabbit hole and immerse yourself.
Did Oswald do IT? Did he act alone? Can Jake stop him? If he does ... wow!
