(Arabic: جوزيف ميرفي)
Joseph Murphy was a Divine Science minister and author.

Murphy was born in Ireland, the son of a private boy's school headmaster and raised a Roman Catholic. He studied for the priesthood and joined the Jesuits. In his twenties, an experience with healing prayer led him to leave the Jesuits and move to the United States, where he became a pharmacist in New York (having a degree in chemistry by that time). Here he attended the Church of the Healing Christ (part of the Church of Divine Science), where Emmet Fox had become minister in 1931.

In the mid 1940s, he moved to Los Angeles, where he met Religious Science founder Ernest Holmes, and was ordained into Religious Science by Holmes in 1946, thereafter teaching at the Institute of Religious Science. A meeting with Divine Science Association president Erwin Gregg led to him being reordained into Divine Science, and he became the minister of the Los Angeles Divine Science Church in 1949, which he built into one of the largest New Thought congregations in the country. In the next decade, Murphy married, earned a PhD in psychology from the University of Southern California and started writing. After his first wife died in 1976, he remarried to a fellow Divine Science minister who was his longstanding secretary. He died in 1981.

Really enjoyed this book. Even though there is a lot of information imparted in the book and it is, it is broken into many small sections (chunks as I call them), making the book much easier to read. Even though this book was written many years ago (first published in 1963), everything in the book is still true.

I have always been interested in the topic of the subconscious mind. To me, it is where ideas are born, where people conscious personality and actions stem from. I like the idea of being able to program it to work more for my in my daily life was intriguing. As the author says, our subconscious is at work 24 hours a day for every day of our lives. Breathing and heartbeat and all our bodily functions we do not give a second thought about even when we are sleeping are controlled by our subconscious.

Being quite a spiritual man, Joseph Murphy also builds in many biblical quotes with his case studies and examples of people he had met. though I do not wholly agree internalizing God as part of the subconscious, I do see where the idea of divine knowledge comes from. Example we are bone we breath are bones and organs are formed, we do not know or have any knowledge of this at the time so how does our body and internal functions know how to function and what to do since birth? I do like the idea of the subconscious being a conduit to the divine. How many times do we have something in the back of our mind, and it comes to pass exactly as we envisioned it. Other things like instinct and intuition also come from the subconscious.

This is a great informative, easy to read, and most of all helpful book. The difference for me between a good and great self help or psychological book is how many of the idea in the book could be used in everyday life, I did not find anything in this book that could not be used in anyone's everyday life. Also, it has stood the test of time already.

I do enjoy self help books - some have even helped, but I'm afraid this is a load of tosh. Perhaps I exaggerate but its showing its age and doesn't stand up to criticism now. Three points...

1. There are far too many biblical references and one begins to suspect there is a religious driver behind this.

2. Can you seriously expect to influence someone else's health with the power of your sub-conscious - come on. Does your sub-conscious mind really heal a cut leg? I don't think so.

3. Sadly I've been dreaming of being a James Bond sort of a guy and having women flocking to me for the whole of my life and it still hasn't happened!

I do believe in the power of the sub-conscious but the author makes far too many claims for its power and how the conscious mind can influence it.

When I started this book, I thought this was gonna be good. The title was really interesting and I'll admit it was an impulsive purchase and I didn't know the author was a Minister. While I have no objections to that or to anything that's written in the book, I find this book a little too absurd. I am all for meditating and believing and about the subconscious faith but this feels like a book for the lazy. And TBH, this book just straight out defies the laws of medicine at some point!

The only solution to everything according to this book is to leave it to god or as is so conveniently called "the subconscious mind" in this book. This book feels like the writer's trying to explain religion in a scientific way without actually giving any scientific explanations and/or even defying the laws of medicine at places!

The only solutions to all your problems is praying or "turning it over to your subconscious mind". Got a health issue? Pray and you won't need a doctor. Got a job issue? Pray and you'll get the promotion! I've read a few Cognitive Psychologies to understand how that really works so while the jist of it correct, it is a little misleading. Trying to get people to have faith is fine but being honest is much more important! Don't tell them they have to pray 100 times a day in order to be cured of a disease, tell them they need to come to terms with it, accept it and you've won the half battle! Tell me when they talk about it with self it leads to the acceptance of the disease which further leads to healing and not that it's the subconscious mind that heals when you impress it with a healthy image.

The subconscious mind of the universe is one, wait what!? No! It's your own actions that are caused as a result of the subconscious or maybe even the conscious decisions towards a goal that makes things come to pass and not others'.

While I respect the contents of this book abiding to the faith or beliefs of people and while I don't mean to refute it, I just feel this book is a little absurd and does nothing except make you lazy. Believing is good, it is the stepping stone to progress but that's not just it.

No offense to anyone.

"You are the sum total of your own thoughts."

What an incredible read! Dr. Joseph Murphy's approach to explaining the workings of the subconscious mind is one of the clearest, most logical and enlightening books on the subject.

The two or three hours I spent reading this book each day felt like an amazing meditation capable of calming any rattled mind. The suggestions made by author as solutions for certain common problems are particularly helpful, and easily adoptable to any problems one may have.

Definitely going to be shelved as one of my all-time-favorites and I don't think I'll ever get tired re-reading this.

The Power of Pseudoscience crap

You can not win with Murphy. If you get what you 'prayed' for, it shows power of your subconscious mind. If you don't, than you didn't pray right. And there is, of course, no other way to know if a prayer was done right except by the result. The book is a terrible mixture of pseudoscience, faith healing non-sense, some stupid coincidences used as examples of rules and so on. One can only find such genius for nonsense in motivational writers. The worse part though is bad writing - showing a lack of self-confidence of a seller. Subconscious is a very powerful things - this is a sure thing, we all know about placebo for example but it is not something that easily controllable. Moreover it understands more in terms of images than words. And imagining yourself a happy movie as author wants you to do, might make you more miserable when you don't see that happening. Happy people don't tell themselves that they are happy. If you consciously tell yourself happy, you might actually be reminding you aren't or you won't have to go trouble of telling yourself that.

I enjoyed learning about changing myself from within. The stories were a little too fantastical sometimes.

Main Concepts:
- Change your thoughts, change your destiny
- You become what you think about all day
- You deserve abundance; wealth, success, life, love, health
- Monitor your thoughts; negative thoughts are DAMAGING and hold you back
- Don't expect free lunch; it's only when you GIVE that you receive ten-fold
- One universal mind; praying for others can impact their life just as effectively as if you were praying for yourself

Techniques
- Always frame thoughts in the positive; your subconscious doesn't understand the difference between sarcasm, humor, or "don't miss this shot!" vs. "I will make this shot"
- Quiet your mind before you desire or pray; when your tired immediately before bed, the line between the conscious and subconscious is blurred and is an ideal time
- Always be inputting and reenforcing desires; you must feed the subconscious and it'll take care of the rest

This is one of the greatest books ever written. I recently read Optimal Thinking: How To Be Your Best Self and I have to tell you that it is the next step past positive thinking. Train your mind with Optimal Thinking and you won't have to settle for second best! Some of the positive affirmations mentioned in this book, worked wonders for my life. The power of subconscious mind is really powerful if we really believe in it. The concept of harmony, peace and abundance that the author wrote is really tremendous. I've experienced it myself and thanks to this book, it helped me through my difficult time when I was laid-off from my job, due to a lack of work. I now found a new job, a great job actually. I don't know if this is just a coincidence (I don't believe in coincidences), or is it because my subconscious mind started working for me (affirmative). If you experience any difficulty in your life, keep praying and hoping, and believe me, everything will be alright in the end. This book can help in giving a new way to look at this life, a new perspective of sorts. Smile and Be Happy!

I am aware that subconsciousness is a very powerful tool, and can influence our lives on so many levels. But this book, which I didn't dare to shelve as a non-fiction reading, can do much harm. Generally, while reading this book, I couldn't help but think of 'History of Wolves' by Emily Fridlund. You can summarize the content with 'If you got what you desired, you grasped the idea correct. If not, you didn't try hard enough. You are at fault here for not giving in all your might to the power of subconscious mind / god / Cthulhu / whatever'.

The book delivers an example similar to the following:

She spotted a terribly fashionable and lovely exclusive Louis Vuitton purse, and almost couldn't peel her nose off the display. The problem with exclusive purses is that they are expensive (if not simply overpriced if you ask me). The girl could not afford it. But don't you worry! Believe you already have it. Imagine it. Like, really imagine the purse is yours.
Eventually she was able to unglue herself from the spot and headed back home. She created a routine of focusing on her target, to make her subconsciousness believe she already got the desired product. Then one day her lover went round to her place to hand her a nicely wrapped gift. The girl was stunned, speechless, she could not believe her eyes, because... It was the exact same Louis Vuitton purse she so desperately dreamed of. YOU SEE, THE UNIVERSE WANTED YOU TO HAVE THIS LOUIS VUITTON PURSE. A product of first need, obviously.

How about... no. I am sorry Mr. Murphy, but no poetry about some mighty universe wannabe laws can justify greed, whims and whines.

Now prepare for the highlight statement of this book! Poverty is a result of your ill mind. Lol yes, you are poor because you don't fight or pray for it right.

Enough! I said and closed the damn book. I know what it's trying to say. But it should not be this repetitive.

The book has been written for a greater purpose and has been in vogue since decades. I can understand the hype and how it has changed lives.

I just found the content rather repetitive and I could have avoided it by reading one chapter at once. And pick up the book again for another chapter another time.

In short, this book is meant for everyone who wants to improver their ways of thinking and making things happen starting from what we think and already believing that we have achieved them.

I liked the concept and the ideas given. But I say if you want to read a similar book which will deliver the same message to you, I can recommend a few short but amazing books which will not take up much of your time and energy but would deliver nevertheless.

Hope you like this book better than I did.

"The only path by which another person can upset you is through your own thought."
- Joseph Murphy, The power of your subconscious mind
🌼
The power of your subconscious mind, as is clear from the title, dwells on the importance of one's consciousness and its power to heal, create and make one's life better. The power of positive affirmations and optimal thinking, and how it can work wonders in practical life where one might find themselves going through hard times on more occasions than once.
🌼
The books present various examples of people from different walks of life, who have tapped into the power of the subconscious and found themselves a better life, some who have even cured themselves of diseases.
True, if one puts their heart and soul in a task and overcome a mental block wherein one can see beyond the fear and focus on just reaching the goal, victory is sure to come.
🌼
The writing is easy to read but the examples seemed redundant and sometimes outright unsubstantiated.
I am all for the power of the mind but propagating an idea that a disease can be cured just by constantly thinking about a healthy life over and over again, seems a bit outlandish. Apart from the lack of evidence about the claims that the book makes, I found the underlying idea of cutting off the negative thoughts and focus on the task at hand, really sound.
🌼

You may have to read (or listen to) this book a few times to fully absorb it. When it started (the audio version) I thought, this guy is talking too fast, there is no serene and calming background music, he said conscious-unconscious mind like a billion times, and the first 15-20 min I couldn't wait for it to finish so I can rate it poorly. *grins* But something happened, I adapted to his pace and started listening and LIKING the book. I thought, oooh so this is the book Rhonda turned into The Secret lol. To make it short: If you don't have problems with being spiritual (or God) then I highly recommend it. If you get a rash if you hear/read someone mentioning God, then you might wanna skip this one.

This book, written in the 1960s contributed to the New Thought Movement and some of its teachings are evident in books such as "The Secret". Dr. Joseph Murphy did not get the credit he deserved. I found this book about 6 months ago and it's changed my view of many things and offered a paradigm shift in how I look at and react to daily circumstances and life's challenges. Basically, the messages we give ourselves and/or messages from parents and teachers etc. for good or bad are filtered through our conscious mind and influence our subconscious mind. This often determines whether we will be successful or get stuck listening to the negative tapes in our heads. It really got me to listen to myself on an inner level.
The awareness of intention, beliefs, what we say and feel toward ourselves and others is of the greatest importance and is often the difference between success and failure. I read this book and it was only the beginning. Many of Dr. Murphy's books have been compiled posthumously through Hay House and they are all very helpful and wise in the teachings, including subjects such as being successful and prosperous.
It's a seminal book that has influenced millions of people and Dr. Murphy's teachings are timeless and very positive. Topics such as jealousy, resentment, anger are covered in his many books. Highly recommended! The affirmations and quotes are very helpful on a daily basis.

A book from another era, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind blends religion, Freud, and self-help to create a feel-good, low-effort way to make your life better: just say what you want over and over again and hope your ucs mind is listening.

It is, of course, which is why this stuff does work, just not as spectacularly as Mr. Murphy claims in his homilies of people who thought their way to fabulous wealth or curing a cancer. The better application is to cure a long-standing fear you have or a mental block. You can indeed think your way to a cure of the ways in which your mind is holding you back. But to say you can cure cancer or MS by thinking is -- implicitly -- to blame the desperately ill for their diseases, and that's just cruel.

Three stars for the book itself but a solid five for its ideas.

I love the concept of using your imagination to change your life. It makes a lot of sense to me and appeals to the creative me. One of my favourite literature quotes is, 'I like them to talk nonsense. That is man's one privilege over all creation.' I love that there is no limit to what our minds can do. And to harness that power to alter one's life for the better is a truly inspiring idea.

I do honestly believe that what we think, we can become. I've always believed that whatever I truly need, the universe will provide, and it's interesting to think that my believing that has made it so. I liked the way the analogies in this book made me see that subconscious mind from a different perspective. I just enjoyed the process of thinking about all the ways I could harness my own subconscious mind to alter my life for the better, and become all the things I want to be.

That being said, the overall delivery of the book was a bit off. It's heavily religious, with plenty of references to God and bible verses. The chapter on marriage was a bit of a tough one for me because it's all about praying with your husband/wife and there's zero consideration of atypical unions. That bothered me a lot, particularly with our country set to vote to give homosexuals the same marriage rights as heterosexuals. It's pretty important to me that their rights be recognised by society, so this chapter was a bit of salt in the wound.

There were also a LOT of examples/case studies, and for many of them I found myself becoming quite skeptical. Particularly when people who had never heard of the author were quoted as saying his phrases. There were also instances where a conclusion was left out and I couldn't help but question why. I'm sure there was a bit of literary license happening here but it bothered me that this wasn't disclosed.

All in all, though, I loved reading this. It'll probably be a bit much for non-religious skeptics, but I really enjoyed playing the ideas through in my mind and I look forward to the benefits of using my subconscious mind for happiness and prosperity.
