About the Author

W. Cleon Skousen is best remembered as a popular author, speaker and teacher who lectured in every state and province in North America, and in more than 60 countries world-wide. He was a student of history and a scholar of law, specializing in the principles of Freedom, the U.S. Constitution, economics, and ancient history and scriptures.

He was invited to write a new constitution for Canada and the proposed United States of Latin America, and he published a model constitution that could be adopted by nations everywhere. He served in the FBI for 16 years, four years as Chief of Police in Salt Lake City, and ten years as a university professor. He was a prolific writer and produced three national best sellers, The Naked Communist, The Naked Capitalist, and The Five Thousand Year Leap. Eight of his books were used as college texts, and several were translated and published in other countries.

Dr. Skousen was born in Canada, and returned to the U.S. with his family at age ten. He spent two years in Mexico, two years in England, graduated from San Bernardino College in California, and received his juris doctor degree from George Washington University Law School. He was admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia and before the District Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court.

His seminars on the Constitution have been taught to several million across the U.S., and among his students were dozens of U.S. Senators and Representatives, two Supreme Court justices, and several candidates for President. He believed knowledge and understanding were key to maintaining a free country, and spent his entire adult life opening up complex issues for deeper understanding by students and audiences all around the world.

Mr. Skousen and his wife, Jewel Pitcher of San Bernardino, California, are the parents of eight children, 50 grandchildren, and more than 120 great-grandchildren.

This book is magnificent read. For those who don't know, this book was written originally in 1958. However, as I was reading through it, I couldn't help but relate it to many of today's issues.

As a reader, I tend to like political/philosophy and other non-fiction books that read more like treatises, or textbooks. Wierd, I know, but that's just my taste. This book definitely reads like a textbook- something I wish today's author would do more of. So many of today's political books attack and insult people of differing ideas or party lines, that its hard to take what they say as absolute truths. But this book, perhaps due to the style of the time, stays away from all that.

I assume there are many people like me out there, who prior to reading this book, thought that communism was/is a good idea, but one that is just not practical in the real world and has been poorly executed. After reading this book however, I realized that communism is not just another harmless way of life- it is extremely destructive to mankind.

In the book the author talks about the history of communism- the who, what, where, why, and hows of the movement. But more importantly, the author talks about the philosophy behind communism, and its many fallacies. For example, communist countries both past and present, always destroy and outlaw religion- and the author explains in great detail why that is.

This is a great read for anyone interested in world history and political history, and wants a clearer understanding of communism and see why all attempts have been disasters.

Ever wonder why our country is headed down the tubes? Here is the foundation for finding out. Years ago the communists were in the government and patriots wanted to root them out. Now we have Muslim Brotherhood members working in the White House.

Below are the 45 goals, read them and see how far we have come:

1. U.S. acceptance of coexistence as the only alternative to atomic war. 2. U.S. willingness to capitulate in preference to engaging in atomic war. 3. Develop the illusion that total disarmament [by] the United States would be a demonstration of moral strength. 4. Permit free trade between all nations regardless of Communist affiliation and regardless of whether or not items could be used for war. 5. Extension of long-term loans to Russia and Soviet satellites. 6. Provide American aid to all nations regardless of Communist domination. 7. Grant recognition of Red China. Admission of Red China to the U.N. 8. Set up East and West Germany as separate states in spite of Khrushchev's promise in 1955 to settle the German question by free elections under supervision of the U.N. 9. Prolong the conferences to ban atomic tests because the United States has agreed to suspend tests as long as negotiations are in progress. 10. Allow all Soviet satellites individual representation in the U.N. 11. Promote the U.N. as the only hope for mankind. If its charter is rewritten, demand that it be set up as a one-world government with its own independent armed forces. (Some Communist leaders believe the world can be taken over as easily by the U.N. as by Moscow. Sometimes these two centers compete with each other as they are now doing in the Congo.) 12. Resist any attempt to outlaw the Communist Party. 13. Do away with all loyalty oaths. 14. Continue giving Russia access to the U.S. Patent Office. 15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States. 16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights. 17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks. 18. Gain control of all student newspapers. 19. Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or organizations which are under Communist attack. 20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policy-making positions. 21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures. 22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms." 23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. "Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art." 24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press. 25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV. 26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy." 27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with "social" religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity, which does not need a "religious crutch." 28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of "separation of church and state." 29. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis. 30. Discredit the American Founding Fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the "common man." 31. Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of the "big picture." Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over. 32. Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture--education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc. 33. Eliminate all laws or procedures which interfere with the operation of the Communist apparatus. 34. Eliminate the House Committee on Un-American Activities. 35. Discredit and eventually dismantle the FBI. 36. Infiltrate and gain control of more unions. 37. Infiltrate and gain control of big business. 38. Transfer some of the powers of arrest from the police to social agencies. Treat all behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders which no one but psychiatrists can understand [or treat]. 39. Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose Communist goals. 40. Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce. 41. Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence of parents. 42. Create the impression that violence and insurrection are legitimate aspects of the American tradition; that students and special-interest groups should rise up and use ["]united force["] to solve economic, political or social problems. 43. Overthrow all colonial governments before native populations are ready for self-government. 44. Internationalize the Panama Canal. 45. Repeal the Connally reservation so the United States cannot prevent the World Court from seizing jurisdiction [over domestic problems. Give the World Court jurisdiction] over nations and individuals alike.

Nice clean looking copy

This book opens up to the reader the sleazy underpinnings of the Marxist/Communist world. To see how the narcissist and irresponsible parent, Karl Marx, operated is almost reward enough. Marx and his cohort ,Engels were amazingly adept at disillusioning themselves as well as countless millions of others. Their mutual admiration society did not allow other forms of reason into their "discoveries" which ranged from how the universe manages itself to how ultimate Communism would result in perfect human beings who get along for ever and ever with never a problem. Incredible naivety from two educated idiots. I highly recommend reading this book as it will enlighten you beyond measure as to that dark, failed world. I kid you not, you will be flabbergasted at how easily these two yo-yo individuals found the most ludicrous and stretched "answers" emanating from their twisted and pained minds. How simplistic their answers and how simplistic they thought it all would end. Read for yourself and see how violent, self aggrandizing, and just flat pea brained these jerks really were. It just goes to show that anyone can get a following if the circumstances are right .... a la Hitler and the German people, or Lenin/Stalin and the Russian people. Incredible. This should be required reading in our Leftist halls of learning throughout the nation. I am absolutely serious, and why not? It is past time for some balance in those socialistic sympathizing institutions. Read the book and see for yourself.

Reviewed in Canada on March 20, 2023
The book starts with a lot of good history in it and explains the ideology well.
Then you get to the chapter on what the future plans are.... It reads like prophecy for our culture today! A very important read for any person concerned with keeping traditional values in the west.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good start with a weak finish
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 4, 2014
The author intends to strip away the deceitful clothing of Communism, to expose the ugliness and cruelty beneath, hence the title. It starts with an interesting and useful history of Marx and Engels, and the rise of Communism, with especial reference to its ruthless methods. It is a product of its time, published as it was nearly 60 years ago, at the height of the Cold War, Scousen correctly indicated the extent to which Western intellectuals and others were being duped by the so-called advantages of Communism and sounded warnings about infiltration occurring in the USA, the UK and western Europe. Towards the end of the book it changes from a historical perspective to the imposition of the author's own philosophy and beliefs upon "the American Student", namely replacing the deceit of communism with the certainty of the Bible. As an atheist this is where I parted company with Scousen, because he implied that to be an atheist was three quarters along the way to being a Communist. I subsequently researched Scousen and it turns out he was a controversial American right-wing fanatic - and a Mormon - who wanted to abolish the Minimum Wage, and wipe out most of the American regulatory agencies. If he'd been alive today he'd be a member of the "Tea Party".
