A guide to self-empowerment and personal fulfillment

Canadian author Melissa Steginus is a productivity and wellness specialist, having served in social work and as a coach, counselor and business strategist. She believes, ‘Your time and energy are your most precious resources. How you spend them shapes your entire life.’ She instructs methods of time and task management. Her books to date - SELF CARE AT WORK and now EVERYDAY MINDFULNESS.

During these trying times of isolation during the COVID19 pandemic, as we try to make sense of all that is occurring in the world and in our lives, Melissa steps up with a guide on how to cope – and thrive. She presents her thoughts in a straightforward manner, making her wise instruction immediately accessible and easy to incorporate. He manner of communication is evident as she defines mindfulness – ‘Mindfulness is about paying attention with intention. Powerful things happen when you take a moment to fully observe your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and surroundings. You begin to recognize what it means to be alive – to think, to feel, to exist in an infinite universe filled with infinite possibilities…To be mindful is to embody this consciousness, to live your life in accordance with the realization that you’re alive…’

How does she accomplish her mission to teach mindfulness? She separates her book into six parts – Physical, Emotional, Rational, Spiritual, Occupation, and Network – and in each category of approach she provides easy to understand and to follow exercises that are five minutes in length – and life long in duration of results. The goal – ‘ to connect with our inner wisdom, and tap into our capacity for self-empowerment, fulfillment, and transformation.’ Each of the days of utilizing this manual/workbook addresses purpose, practice, and reflection – a quality technique offered by a wise and compassionate coach.

Books of this intention often glide into unfocused arenas: Melissa Steginus’ book remains focused and therefore respectful of the ‘pupil’s’ time and needs, and in doing so becomes one of the most beneficial ways of truly achieving mindfulness.

When I first read the title Everyday Mindfulness by Melissa Steginus I was intrigued. What is mindfulness anyway? It written everywhere and heard in many areas, (books, TV, Youtube,) but I really didn’t know what it meant.
Melissa Steginus explains all of that in her new book Everyday Mindfulness including instructions on how to use the book which was surprising. These instructions include the different areas the book is divided. (Physical, Emotional, Rational, Spiritual, Occupation, and Network) The instructions include taking 108 days to develop these six areas. It’s fascinating what we can accomplish through the tips and suggestions of this book.
Many are simple things to do and there is even a place to write the thoughts of each part of our mindfulness on its pages. With the expertise as a coach and wellness specialist of Ms. Steginus knows how to help us in our journey to make positive changes in our life.

Our life is shaped by our mind, for we become what we think. Knowing that the mind is the most powerful organ, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that it exercises control over all other voluntary and involuntary functions of the body. Hence, it is imperative that the mind is healthy and capable of making the right choices. Everyday Mindfulness is a quick approach to attaining mindfulness using hundred and eight different strategies that can help cope with stress, anxiety, pressure and physical inability.

This book is so thoughtfully put together!
Now, I have to admit that I get nervous when it comes to books about "meditation" because they can get...well, a bit more out there then I'm interested in. But mindful meditation is such a different thing to me and I've found it so helpful. So I was really happy about this easy to follow book.
Each day has it's own short section, so it doesn't feel too overwhelming to tackle, but there are also some powerful questions to go over to help reflect on the new thing I tried that day.
For example, one part says to set a reminder to do mindful meditation 3 times a day and instantly I said "no way!!", but, I kept reading, and the way she broke the meditation down into these very short segments, it suddenly became something that was more manageable and very possible even on busy days.
It also makes you ask yourself the best questions for that particular exercise....some practice items I'd see and think "well duh!", but then, once I stopped and thought about it, I realized that I don't typically TRULY ask myself, or give myself permission to take the time for, some of these seemingly simple things, let alone take action to do anything positive about it. It seems easy but if you're really digging in, it's not that easy at first. But, say, on a subject that is a bit more difficult or intense for me personally (like all of chapter 2 and day 40 :) ), I've been able to go even slower and take it small step by small step to get through it and came out with some new ways to help me deal with some of these issues in a positive way and I really appreciate that more then I can put into words here!

I'm told that in the printed copy of the book there are open blank spots by the reflection questions and other places, so you can have your notes right in the book which is awesome! But even if you get the ebook, she has pages set up that have those questions on them. There is a link I clicked on right in the book at the end of the 'Commit to Yourself" section, right before day 1 begins. They are laid out really nicely and you can download them and print them out to have them for all your notes as well.

I've truly found this book so helpful and am really enjoying putting it to use.

What a wonderful book for mindfulness in small, usable, daily doses.

Everyday Mindfulness offers “108 Simple Practices to Empower Yourself and Transform Your Life.” Whether you practice mediation daily and are looking for deeper fulfillment or want to immerse yourself in a new practice, Melissa Steginus’ approach builds a sense of empowerment.

Many meditative practices center around what we already do every day. To facilitate this natural inclusion, Everyday Mindfulness looks at the different facets of your life. Combined with short, easy exercises, the book teaches you to listen, understand and observe aspects of your day that otherwise pass you by.

Principles of Everyday Mindfulness:
Physical: Listening to your body and reconnecting with yourself
Emotional: Understanding your feelings and learning to trust them
Rational: Observing your thought patterns to gain mental clarity
Spiritual: Exploring your relationship with yourself and your truth
Occupation: Managing your time and energy to pursue your priorities
Network: Nourishing relationships that deepen your sense of belonging

So what makes this tome different from other books on mindfulness, you may ask? The gentle approach that is easy to incorporate into your daily routine. Each lesson is fast, uncomplicated and rewarding. There’s nothing worse than trying to embark on a new mindfulness path and ending up more stressed out about what you’re not doing or doing wrong. Nothing could be further from Steginus’ approach. She asks only one thing; that you Commit to Yourself.

My favorite lessons were Walking Meditation, Declutter Your Space, Talk To Yourself and Celebrate Change. But there are over a hundred others for you to explore and try out. Uniquely designed for use over an extended period of time, this book was worth every minute of every day.

Indulge. Lose yourself in Everyday Mindfulness. Your only regret will be not having done it sooner.

This book was a pleasant surprise! I was not sure what to expect but when I received it I was thrilled at the straightforward approach and the accessibility of the exercises. The practices are geared to pull you out of any rut, misdirection or distraction that you are experiencing and offer simple ways for you to reexamine your trajectory.

This book needed to be followed and I realized that I knew a number of people who might also benefit from this journey. It inspired me to start a Facebook group so they could join in, follow the exercises within a supportive environment and notice how mindfulness can be slipped into the day, into the things we already do. The directions are easy to follow and allow you the freedom to join in as much or as little as you want. It is your journey while at the same time a group journey. I am loving the experience. In case you’d like to join in, search on Facebook for: 108 Days of Everyday Mindfulness.

I love the accessibility of this book. It is simple, practical and engaging. It opens the door to deepening mindful attention and intention as mindfulness is the awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, without judgement, in the service of self-understanding and inner wisdom. This book offers 108 ways to support this journey. I highly recommend it.

Thank you to TCK Publishing for sharing this book with me. All opinions expressed are my own.

From the table of contents through to the conclusion, I was totally engaged in this book. I especially liked the explanation as to why there are 108 exercises – you'll have to purchase the book to find that out! And there is the bonus of being able to obtain additional resources from the author's website, demonstrating the commitment of the author to her readers.

The 'how-to' section was self-explanatory, highlighting how to get the most out of the exercises, culminating in the author, letting the readers know what she wishes for them. This was such a beautiful way to motivate me to commit to myself.

The chapters follow a gentle journey with one step at a time, beginning where anyone and everyone can start. A simple first step is all you need to walk to the end of this journey. Day by day you follow an empowering path, being gently challenged and stretched without
realising the huge impact these small changes are making.

There is a reflection at the end of each chapter giving the reader time to process and embody the changes being made. By the end of the book, it felt a little like I had written my own personal diary on my progress of knowing myself better.

How could I be the same person who had started reading this book now that I have reached the end? Mindfulness and becoming a better person go hand in hand.
I absolutely loved this book, and I'm happy to recommend it.

This review originally appeared on The Magical Buffet's website on 02/03/2021.

“Everyday Mindfulness” by Melissa Steginus opens by saying, “Mindfulness is about paying attention with intention. Powerful things happen when you take a moment to fully observe your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and surroundings.” Sounds good, doesn’t it? However, living mindfully is more difficult than you might suspect.

Steginus realizes this and honestly, has put together a great, straightforward way to learn about, and apply mindfulness in your daily life. Her book, “Everyday Mindfulness: 108 Simple Practices to Empower Yourself and Transform Your Life” is the perfect sample pack of mindfulness techniques. Ideally, for 108 days, each day, you will try out a new exercise. 108 different things may seem overwhelming, but each day is 5 minutes or less!

“Everyday Mindfulness” is a perfect fit for every person. Each person will come away with something to improve their daily life.

While this may seem like a simple book, the results you can produce for yourself are well beyond simple.

These 108 simple practices can empower and transform your living – taking you from an autopilot infused monkey brain to a calm, collected, and mindful persona – in less than four months.

Most of the practices require less than 10 minutes to implement. So, there's no excuse for not incorporating them into your daily routine, one after another.

The path to self-empowerment and personal fulfillment begins with this 108-day journey.

We're often told to stay present, in the now. Christians are encouraged to "practice the presence" of Christ - meaning to keep HIM uppermost in your thoughts, words, deeds and actions.

Everyday Mindfulness is a lovely book that promises more than "21 days to a new habit" but a way to practice Mindfulness in the most mundane of circumstances thereby, assuring you are present and in the now every day, all day.

A great read with practical, do-able steps.

As I have read quite a few books on mindfulness, the information and exercises in this book were not new to me. However if you are a beginner in the field of mindfulness, this would be an excellent book to get you started with the right mindset and practices.
