Artist's Painting Techniques is your practical guide to learning how to bring out your inner artist with a wide range of painting styles, whether you want to learn how to use acrylics, watercolors, or oil paints.
With progression in mind, this master class will teach you the basic principles of painting and then inspire you to move on to new challenges and create masterpieces of your own. It explains which tools, materials, and methods should be used along the way, but lets you develop your artistic skills on your own terms rather than providing a series of steps to be followed.
Whether you are a beginner wanting to take up a new hobby or an experienced artist who wants to expand your horizons and learn new styles, Artist's Painting Techniques will set you on your path to creativity.
This volume is even better than I had been hoping it would be! It is truly a sort of ‘bible’ for both the experienced and the novice artist.
This book has it all. Inside are extensive and helpful details for all types of artists: for those who enjoy sketching, for those that enjoy water color painting, for those who prefer painting with acrylic paints, and those who prefer oil paints. These are all very different techniques, yet all are covered in detail and with great expertise.
The book begins with explanations about how to observe to better portray the subject on paper or canvas. The author also thoroughly explains the use of color, perspective, and composition. This book can also help the reader decide which medium is best for her.
I love how the instructions and examples are on full-color, glossy, sturdy pages. Examples of paintings and drawings are used in the explanations, with arrows pointing out the instruction. In this way, everything is clear and understandable. Each medium is divided up into sections containing beginner, intermediate and advanced techniques. Some of the topics covered within each medium are: creating a mood with a painting, layering, mixing colors, various brushstrokes, creating highlights, simplifying a scene you are painting, using various brushes and palette knives for specific effects, adding texture, and so much more. In short, everything you ever wanted to know about sketching or painting in any medium is to be found in this one 304-page volume. If you are an artist, you need this book! And, for one low price, you are getting all the knowledge you need to be an effective artist.
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.
DK is the master of producing books with thick pages and good print quality. I have a few large DK books that were well worth the money.
Even I occasionally look up DK books online. What makes DK books nice? Their books have far too many illustrations and details.
All of Wikipedia for painters is Artist's Painting Techniques. from oil painting to watercolors. between the Beginner and the Advanced levels. If you enjoy painting, you can only get this book.
Watercolors are my favorite medium since they're affordable, simple to use, and produce stunning artwork like Japanese landscape designs.
More practical than theory. This book has all the supplies needed to create paintings on various surfaces. It costs a lot to paint as a hobby. Due to the supplies needed for art, it costs more than other hobbies.
Anyway Recommended if you need only one book for Painting Techniques.
This is like an encyclopedia. Nothing is covered in depth and it is not really a how-to. If you find something you are interested in you will probably have to turn to other sources to get an in-depth knowledge.
It's strength is that it gives you a brief coverage of all three media it covers (watercolour, arcylic and oils), without really overlapping information given in any one (e.g., colour mixing). It assumes that you have a basic knowledge of drawing.
Fabulous art books (I bought the companion drawing volume too) for anyone starting out, looking for a no-nonsense, step-by-step approach on all of the basics. For someone like me, who knows virtually nothing about drawing and painting, both books are a godsend, providing information on what you need, and clear guidance on how to master the concepts and techniques for your own artwork. Highly recommended.
Artist's Painting Techniques... a good resource for students and artists exploring watercolor, acrylic, and oil paints. Brief yet detailed explanations of each media type and simple techniques explained through progress images of multiple artworks.
This is as the book describes, more than simply replicating a subject with photographic accuracy. As an artist, you have the license to move, alter, emphasize, or exclude elements of your choosing. The art of seeing is not just about capturing what is in front of you, it's also about interpreting it in your own way.
Amazing!!!!! So many helpful tips and tricks. The volume is perfect and each part of the book is for different mediums and different levels. Even as someone who does not particularly use watercolour or certain mediums, I read the whole entire book and kept sticky notes on basically every single page for good tips. A must have in your collection if you’re wanting to better yourself as an artist and gain some new ideas and perspectives.
