The Art of Insubordination: How to Dissent and Defy Effectively

Rate this book
A research-based toolbox for anyone who wants to create a world with more justice, creativity, and courage.

For ideas to evolve and for societies to progress, we desperately need rebels to challenge conventional wisdom and improve on it. Unfortunately, most of us fear nonconformists, perceiving them as disloyal, reckless, destructive, or just plain weird. Because most would-be rebels lack the strength and skills to overcome hostile audiences, principled insubordination remains an underleveraged asset in the workplace and public square.

Based on cutting-edge research, The Art of Insubordination is the essential guidebook for anyone seeking to be heard, make change, and rebel against an unhealthy, stagnant status quo. The book also gives the rest of us the evidence-based strategies we need to become better allies of our leaders in change, ensuring that the best ideas, products, and solutions survive and win the day. Inside this book lie answers to several questions, including:

- What are the most effective ways to express unpopular, important ideas?
- How can we help principled rebels be heard and influential?
- How can we better manage the discomfort when trying to rebel or interacting with a rebel?

Filled with fresh and engaging stories about dissenters in the trenches as well as science that will make you see the world in a different way, The Art of Insubordination is for anyone who wants to see more justice, creativity, inclusion, cultural dynamism, and innovation in the world.

I wish I'd read this book 20 years ago. I'm a pain educator and clinician, offering people with persistent pain a way forward alongside their pain - most of our healthcare focuses on getting rid of pain, and uses a biomedical model. The Art of Insubordination offers strategies I will be using going forward to bring my biomedical colleagues along with me in promoting the much broader "whole person" approach to understanding pain.
Key point for me: recognising that once we've started to create change we need to bring those "others" along with us!
But alongside this, there are practical strategies on how to talk persuasively, attract people who will have your back (so you're not carrying the entire load alone), how to build grit (because you'll need it to be a principled rebel!), and that final point that really got to me: how to "win" responsibly and use the strengths of those who disagree.
I highly recommend The Art of Insubordination for all the other "painiacs" out there, the principled revolutionaries, the people who want a richer, more inclusive, more functioning, compassionate and exciting community - with the ideas Todd Kashdan introduces, we can do this.

Todd Kashdan is one of those unique thinkers who courageously asks questions around hard topics that many people would rather avoid. This book asks hard questions, and then asks something harder: it asks us to develop the courage and habit of asking hard questions - that matter and in a principled way - ourselves.

I've read several books in recent years on being a rebel, particularly in the business world. None of them challenged me, developed original perspectives, or leaned on the science (in a digestible way) the way that this book did.

The book does a few things supremely well:

1. It weaves extraordinary stories that demand you keep reading throughout its pages. For example, there's the the NBA player who shoots free-throws "granny style" at over 94% accuracy but his style is against the norm so no one else will do it even though it's a game changer (or should I say game winner). Or the story of the questions that arose after the tragic accidental death of the first female US Air Force fighter pilot. Or the rebellion of New Yorker, Elizabeth Jennings, in an act of racial insubordination 100 years before Rosa Parks, or a fascinating story about punk rockers, Fugazi, or the cultural and social history surrounding the inventor and invention of the first rape kits for police investigations and hospitals. There are literally a dozen stories you've never heard that are compelling.

2. Kashdan also integrates the very best psychological science that you haven't read about in other books. You won't hear the same stuff that everyone else talks about, copies, and continues to inculcate into a saturated psychology bookshelf. This is original. It's provocative. And it's hitting the right notes.

3. It maintains momentum. This is NOT one of those books that makes you wonder if you ought to be checking your email or looking into the fridge to find a distraction. Instead, it's the kind of book that makes you feel like the kids will probably ok to get dinner themselves tonight because you've got another chapter to read.

Short upshot of all of this? This book is outstanding. Professor Kashdan has taken complicated science and made it accessible, practical, and real. I loved this book.

What I love about this book is that it combines so many different types of books that I love into one amazing adventure. It offers science along with suggestions for self-improvement; it offers historical events along with personal, everyday anecdotes. The Art of Insubordination not only offers the why, but the how, for using the power of dissent for good.

Even further, the value of the narrative is endless. It is a book that I certainly wish I had in my hands at a much younger age; I think we are all likely victims of hindsight and can remember moments where going with the flow steered us wrong. That said, it also offers lessons and advice for multiple contexts. Business managers can learn how to cultivate organizational cultures that encourage countercultural, creative brainstorming. Teachers can learn how to inspire the next generation of "principled rebels" that push politics and society towards change for the better. Parents will gain insight into how to inspire their children to stand up not only for themselves, but for what is right, in any given moment.

I am the type of book reader that tends to give his books away after I have completed and enjoyed them; I want someone else to experience the joy that the book brought me. This will be the first book where, instead of giving it away, I will be buying copies for others. While I will still wish for others to have the same experience of reading it that I had, I am not quite ready to give away my copy because I know that there will be plenty of referencing and rereading to come.

Well done, Dr. Kashdan.

Renegades have always been fascinating. However, the difference between a disruptor and a dissenter is the art of insubordination. A self-described insubordinate, Dr. Todd Kashdan artfully synthesizes a plethora of research to give a recipe for becoming a dissenter or catalyst of change. The Art of Insubordination: How to Dissent and Defy Effectively is written in such a way you feel as if Kashdan’s speaking to you personally. He writes with wit and wisdom, and fills every chapter with a universe of ideas. Even if you aren’t a student of psychology, you will find this book highly useful in business, education or simply when dealing with everyday people.

I was able to read an advanced copy of #TheArtofInsubordination coming out on 2/15 & loved the fascinating research & stories of rebels through the ages. It made me want to listen to others with more of an open heart & mind and strive to be less judgemental. Contains strategies I often used in my life the very same day. Includes stirring anecdotes & research from some of life’s big themes: courage, greed, heartbreak, friendship, love, value, freedom, truth, justice, honesty, compassion. *If you like Fugazi, added bonus for you!

In The Art of Insubordination, Dr. Todd Kashdan outlines for readers why principled rebels are important. We need them to move our society toward justice and innovation. He then gives "recipe steps" for how to effectively break from the majority while maintaining your values. This book is based on over 50 years of research on leadership, biases, psychological distress and wellbeing, and change processes. These empirical facts are delivered in an easy-to-read and entertaining format. I especially loved the stories about principled rebels throughout history: Elizabeth Jennings and the band Fugazi, to name just a few dissenters. I found myself considering my own personal and professional development at multiple points throughout the book. It is rare that a book does that for me. I found the section about helping children to develop critical thinking skills, grounded in prosocial and valued directions, in order to be insubordinate especially useful! If you want practical tips on how to grow passion, persistence, and persuasion, this book is for you. A great read!

Fantastic read, all-around! Although, I have always held a deep fascination for the world of Science and Psychology, specifically, I very much appreciate the fact that this book does not read, at all, like a textbook. Todd’s ability to bring his personality to the page through personal anecdotes and make the read feel like a fun, thought-provoking, and inspiring conversation, makes “The Art of Insubordination: How to Dissent and Defy Effectively” a very easy book to read! If you have an open mind, the desire to create a better future, and/or a love for Science and Psychology, I highly recommend reading it.

In American culture, rebels are an adored group. They can be heroes, anti-heroes, titans of industry or civil rights leaders. We glamorize, discuss, and pay homage to courageous rebels who stood by their convictions in the face of undeniably long odds. Why? Well, because they shifted our foundational beliefs about what is right, what is possible, or simply, how the world works. Rosa Parks opened our collective imaginations as to how systemic injustice can be fought. Steve Jobs gave us iPhones and transformed the way people interact with one another. Ghandi took on the British f***** empire! It may seem as though our modern age is scantly filled with anyone close to the magnanimity of any of those figures, but, the likelihood is high that you already know a courageous rebel. That sibling who came out of the closet and that single mom raising two kids, and heck, you, in all your idiosyncrasies are a rebel. As you can tell, you don’t need to stand up to an overwhelming authority in the face of small odds to be a rebel. Sometimes, the courageousness of getting through a day with bills paid and mouths fed is enough to earn the label.

Some of us are rebellious for the life we are born into, for the sexual or gender identity we claim, or the race we are born as. We emerge into a world with systemic barriers that we must navigate, often strenuously, before resting our heads at night, uncertain of how we’ll make it through the next day. At some point, all adults learn that life ain’t fair. Many of us have to traverse racism, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, or ableism in our schools or offices or neighborhoods and homes. Kashdan raises the question, How do we function in a group whose opinions and values differ from our own? How do we survive an unwelcoming society? The Art of Insubordination will help. It’ll tell you why rebelling is a worthy individual pursuit, why rebels are valuable to a group, how to increase the odds of rebelling successfully, and how to cope with the stresses that rebelling can bring. Families, offices, and teams of all kinds are stronger when the views of a rebel are integrated into the group dynamic. Kashdan backs up his persuasive arguments with solid research and fun case studies, from underhanded free throw shooter Rick Barry to the DIY punk band Fugazi to his own foray as a substitute teacher in his daughter’s elementary school class. There’s wisdom, care, novelty, humor, and science, all melded together in one book. It’s like Macchiavelli’s The Prince for the disenfranchised and tender hearted. Seriously, you’re going to want to keep a copy close at hand. Go read this book and come away a wiser friend, lover, or mentor. It’s worth your time.

Just happened to stumble across this book while browsing through the new releases. The title alone had piqued my interest and my immediate thought was; could this be yet another useless regurgitation of TED talks wrapped up in a shiny new package with a clever title or am I about to embark upon something unique and useful? Something which may provide an immediate and tangible benefit to both my personal and professional lives? Upon a brief browse through Dr. Kashdan’s ideas, it became apparent that he may really be on to something. And after thorough read, my suspicions we more than confirmed. Dr. Kashdan presents a fresh perspective on a tired narrative with the potential for immediate benefits. While the snazzy title may invoke the expectation of negativity and certain nefarious behaviors immediately associated with the word insubordination. That is only the first in twist Dr. Kashdan’s journey through what is essentially a playbook to effectively game the system completely undetected. This work revolves around positivity, self-advancement and ethical contributions to the world for the everyday carbon-based life form. The strategies presented are not only practical but impactful and tailored to produce immediate results. In short, if you find yourself having a difficult time getting ahead and need tangible strategies to change the trajectory of your life in the current “elitist boy’s club” climate that we find ourselves in today, this book is absolutely for you.

Reading this book taught me a lot - that's the highest praise I can give.

The stories and anecdotes from around the world were thrilling, and seeing how success or failure of these examples exemplified the research evidence was instructive.

What I really loved about reading this book is that it is secretly self-help for your mental health (without the usual cliche). So much of our purpose in life comes from striving towards goals, and this book is the compass to help people progress towards theirs, with skills related to communication, leadership, dealing with setbacks, and eventually winning gracefully.

Thanks Todd!

I was lucky to score an advance copy of this book and let me tell you, what an inspiring read. As someone working through a bit of a transition this book came to me at the perfect time. For so many reasons - fear, doubt, perceived cultural norms - it’s easy to get lost in your own head and talk yourself out of making meaningful change. Thankfully we have someone like Dr. Kashdan to help us navigate and break down this process.

This book is written in a language that anyone can understand, interspersed with relevant examples and personal stories with all of the science needed to back it up. All along the way Dr. Kashdan gives you tons of actionable steps that you can implement to allow you to rise above the status quo – all for the price of a few craft beers. Seriously, you’ll get some of the best coaching that money can buy plus a whole host of techniques that you can use to get out of your own head and into the mental space needed to make and influence change. And the last section – I won’t give it away but it’s a must read for anyone with young children or thinking about having kids.

It's criminal that subject matter like this is not taught in schools these days and that we’re left to sort through the morass of our own thoughts on our own. Very highly recommended for anyone trying to figure out what comes next or how to live your life beyond the confines of what you think your family, friends, or peers expect of you.

Dr. Todd Kashdan is a gifted and compelling writer. I was able to read an advance copy of his phenomenal, timely, and important new book. A dedicated, cutting edge researcher and brilliant storyteller, Todd is again at the top of his game, passionate, provocative, and clear. Inspiring us to be "principled rebels," I found "The Art of Insubordination: How to Dissent and Defy Effectively" exciting, validating and fascinating. An award winning writer and professor, Dr. Kashdan shares evidence-based leadership and positive change strategies, as well as powerful examples of justice, creativity, inclusivity, innovation, and courage across time and place. I love this book! It's timeless, visionary, and a most highly recommended essential guidebook to help us leverage our abilities, and to bravely apply the the power of principled insubordination for good.

Wow what a book! I am only halfway through but felt like I should give my opinion now and then another one towards the end. From the very beginning the book does a great job of making more complex social topics digestible which is something that a lot of books on psychology tend to not focus too much on. The aspects of this book given as a cookbook for successful dissent also is super successful in outlining necessary steps, but also to challenge preconceived notions about what it means to be a person of change or dissent. That’s where I’m at right now, but I can’t wait to see how this book continues to flourish and challenge my idea of what it means to challenge a prevailing system that everyone else goes along with

This is such a wonderful book. It contains so many compelling examples of people who thought differently and successfully got others to do the same. I truly believe this is one of the most important skills of our modern times, and yet it is so, so hard to do well. Kashdan has given us all a gift in the form of what is essentially a manual of how to do so effectively. His prose is so clear and the stories he presents so interesting that you will find yourself engaged throughout, and by the end you will absolutely feel more confident in your ability to dissent and defy effectively, while bringing others along with you. Truly a must-read.

A highly recommended read. A book that you’d wish you had read years ago.

In The Art of Insubordination, Todd Kashdan generously shares stories, strategies and science that tell us what insubordination does, why it matters, who does it, how it is done, and how to have more of it. Far from random rebellion, the author emphasizes principled insubordination or rebellion, rooted in deeply held conviction and intended to contribute to the betterment of society, carried out ethically even in the face of unpleasant social pressure.

The book is written both for those who would, and those who wouldn’t, practise insubordination.

For those who are ‘heroes-in-waiting’, Part Two is a comprehensive playbook for non-conformists. Kashdan teaches you how to rebel and ways to guard your heart, your mind, and watch your back, preparing you for the long haul and sustainable impact. All the strategies in this pot of gold are soundly backed by psychological research and findings.

Then for those who would not or dare not – yes it takes courage to rebel, Kashdan shows how powerful complicity in encouraging, nurturing, and facilitating the dissenters, the weirdos, and the outliers, can be. I love that almost half of the book goes into how to and why you might want to, strategically harness and leverage on insubordination to invoke curiosity, critical thinking and creativity that are so essential to extraordinary performance.

If change is constant, then the way change happens need to evolve. The Art of Insubordination shows what’s needed: start with a question that tickles your mind or conscience … and simply but doggedly “keep questioning the rules until you get good answers”!

Like others have said in previous reviews, I wish I had read this book sooner. It's so easy to feel like an ant while working for a gigantic corporation, or even medium sized outfit. This book gives you the tools to stand out and make your voice heard. I am a paraplegic and this book will help me advocate better for my needs and the needs of others. I love how uncensored Todd is and how he encourages us to be more so. In a world with such injustice, there is no room for censorship. There is no room for silence. Thank you for your opus, Todd. It is desperately needed in this crazy fucking world we find ourselves in.

I'm not finished with the book quite yet so I will probably edit this review as I go along. But I can say one thing with absolute certainty. Being a genuine, curious, conscientious rebel enthusiastically seeking out opposing viewpoints and new experiences is the recipe for a fulfilling life.

If you want to share your thoughts effectively with an increasingly hostile world, or you lead a team and you want to create free thinkers within a culture that embraces divergent ideas, or you just want to know when and how to go against the grain because you believe passionately that there's a better way, you need to read this book.

This book challenged me to think differently about myself. Do I really accept different perspectives openly? Do I shut down ideas without giving the speaker the benefit of assuming good intentions? When I meet a rebel, can I accept the idea that my ideas might not be innovative? Do I see my own divergent thoughts as an opportunity to be a "principled reble" and drive change, or do I (yes) sometimes take the easy path and set aside my ideals? The best thing I can say about this book is that it made me question my own self-perception and I know that I'm a better person for the experience.

Sometimes books come at the right time. This is one of those books.

There are so many reasons to love this book. Look at the reviews and you’ll see the kaleidoscope of value people are gaining from it. My perspective comes from business. I’ve spent my career designing new products for businesses. In this world, it’s super important to create an environment where dissenting ideas can be raised, shared, and debated when you want to create something new for the business. But it’s hard ... really ... really ... REALLY hard. What I love about the Art of Insubordination is that it gives you a durable blueprint for cultivating an environment of dissent so that you can empower change. Todd provides practical advice laced with his unique humor and insights (if you follow Todd, then you know exactly what I’m talking about). I’ve always loved reading books, but I’ve never been the type of person to buy other people books. This is the first time where I made a bulk order so that I could give everyone on my team a copy of this book. It’s that important to me and it’s that important to the work we are doing that I think everyone should have a copy. Don’t miss out, get yourself a copy and share it far and wide.

Any book that gets in a reference to Fugazi is alright by me! I was lucky enough to get hold of an advanced copy and have been telling anyone who'll listen, that this is a must-read. If you are interested in making a positive difference at work, outside of work, in life, anywhere really, then this is the book for you. Many of us want to shake things up in the name of positive progress but don’t know where to start. So what I particularly love about the book is the way Todd shares practical advice to help you become a ‘principled rebel’. And as you'd expect the guidance is backed up by the evidence-base from numerous psychological studies, and then brought to life with thought-provoking and inspiring stories and examples. Todd seamlessly bridges the gap between academia and real-life and in doing so this book really is a force for good.

The Art of Insubordination is that rare nonfiction book that manages to teach without being academic, inspire without being preachy, excite without being hyperbolic, and help without being simplistic. If you’re the kind of person who wants to make a positive difference in the world, then Todd Kashdan is a terrific guide. For me personally, the chapters on how to be more persuasive and what to do when you succeed were especially helpful, but I probably most enjoyed the story about the young woman doing cartwheels in the library. Definitely worth checking out.

"The Art of Insubordination: How to Dissent and Defy Effectively" is a good read that successfully holds the reader's attention. The ideas in this book are valuable, I think especially in todays time, where it is common to see people undervalue those of opposing opinion; "The Art of Insubordination" provides with tools to be a 'principled rebel' who contributes their unique ideas to the society respectfully and effectively.

You might get pissed-off with my book review, and I don’t mind if you do because I am practicing the art of insubordination! I believe you should explore Kashdan’s remarkable ideas in The Art of Insubordination because you’re not expressing your viewpoints in polite conversation, not sticking up for yourself in crummy situations, and you’re conforming to soul-sucking nonsense in your world, and you might not even realize it. You might say, “Hey! You don’t even know me! I’m quite assertive and outspoken!” Kashdan’s book outlines a great deal of research – in an interesting and edifying manner – showing most folks typically zip their lip and engage in lots of status quoing, even if it has a deleterious impact on their Life. You probably fit that description, too!

Is it irritating to read such provocative judgement about your proclivities? Good! It was for me, too, especially since I fancy myself an avid applecart upsetter. However, this book also explains effective ways to improve the world around us by being thoughtful, prosocial, and more authentically proactive in expressing our unique viewpoints despite the challenges.

The Art of Insubordination: How to Dissent and Defy Effectively is a fun, funny, and well-written book with original viewpoints about improving the human condition for an individual and for the community at-large. Despite the first 219 words of my review (and the way you are judging the book by its cover), please know this book is truly about making the world a better place and improving social justice… all while helping you act more genuinely on your own individual values and commitments.

Kashdan writes in a way that ensures everyone can learn the ideas he’s discussing. This book will satisfy the casual reader, the eager self-improver, and the incisive academician. The Art of Insubordination punctuates each chapter with a “The Big Idea” section summarizing the current topic, and ends each chapter with “Recipe Steps” to digestibly synopsize the concepts and guidelines for more effective defiance.

One of “The Big Idea” sections that stuck with me stated: “To disobey effectively, it helps to know our enemy: the overriding human motivation to fit it, stick to the herd, accept conventional wisdom, and ‘go along to get along.’” While I disagreed with his use of the word “enemy,” I totally resonated with his idea that conformity is a significant “obstacle” to progress, and that disobedience is critical for individual and cultural growth. There other were times where I dissented from Kashdan’s viewpoints (as I imagine he’d want me to), and thought that maybe not everyone has the personality type or current context for engaging in disobedience. But keep in mind, the book doesn’t mandate insubordination. (Could you imagine?). On the other hand, The Art of Insubordination is an invitation to express your own worthy viewpoint, embrace other people’s worthwhile ideas, and realize that rebellion is really one of the main ingredients to making the world a better place. Highly recommended!

Non-conformity is a vital part of being human, a potential consequence of our inherent individuality. We all possess a unique genotype, life history, and personality profile. Our mix of interests, aspirations, and social relationships are different from anyone else’s. As you use this book, remember that what will most benefit the world is not what you share in common with others but what sets you apart. Push hard into your uniqueness and help others do the same. Do it boldly and compassionately. Whether you succeed or not, it’s the only way to reach your human potential.

As a relative newbie to this genre of literature, I was absolutely blown away by Kashdan. He speaks to the educated masses... His analogies and historical context are spot on: he draws from the likes of Rosa Parks, NBA hall of famer Rick Barry, Washington, D.C. transcendent punk rock band Fugazi, and Maximiilen Robespierre, architect of the famed "Reign of Terror" during the French Revolution, to name just a few. I was captivated by both his content and delivery. As I read on, it seemed to me like Kashdan was conversing to me from the other side of the leather sofa that I was sitting on... I can't say enough about this book... In one word, EPIC!

To be the change we want to see in the world is an important yet daunting task. Todd Kashdan's "Art of Insubordination: How to Dissent and Defy Effectively" provides a scientifically-informed, engaging, and digestible blueprint for expressing important ideas and enacting change that challenge the oft stagnant and deleterious status quo. A Terrific and enlightening read! Would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in making a positive difference in their lives or in the world at large.

Don’t hesitate! Get this book!

This is the kind of book that can truly make a difference in someone’s life. It provides the toolkit for living a life well lived, a life where you can share your thoughts without hesitation, a life where those with different views are not considered the enemy and a life where you can finally feel free to think, believe and express your thoughts effectively.

Dr. Kashdan does a beautiful job sharing his research and everyday stories. He weaves the data joined with the experiences. He includes homework and activities to get you thinking, sometimes, in very surprising ways. He throws ideas at you that hit your gut, forcing you to think a little more deeply, a little more compassionately, and a little more openly.

This is the book to share with your children. Teach them how to understand nuance, how to question ideas effectively, how to share the table with others, and how to become outstanding friends, lovers, colleagues, citizens and all-around amazing people.

This is the book to share with your family. Talk with them about sharing critical ideas, how to share alternative viewpoints, how to get along at the Thanksgiving table.

This a book to share with colleagues, both those above and below your place on the corporate ladder. It will open up ideas about constructive dialogue, sharing alternative ideas, expressing dissent and recognizing differences.

This is a book to share with clients. It is full of “Big Ideas” and homework assignments for therapeutic and coaching clients. It’s a beautiful way to engage clients in challenging and deep conversations.

This is the book to reference again and again for new nuggets of information. Reading this a second time allowed me to dig a little deeper into why this subject matter was so important to me and why the message was so critical. Insubordination in and of itself typically conjures up negative images and thoughts. Understanding what’s behind it, how to use it and how to effectively express your ideas is critical in a well-functioning and dynamic society.

This book will be on my bookshelf to be referenced time and time again. And, will be shared with many.

If you have always been full of questions about why the status quo is what it is, if you are dissatisfied with how we humans are addressing (or, ignoring) issues like global warming, institutional racism, misogyny, political polarization – hell, if you want to amplify your leadership at work, or teach your children ninja-level skills in persuasion, if you want to make a difference in the world in a powerful, effective way, then this book is for you. It is exactly, and I mean *exactly*, the book we need right now.

The Art of Insubordination by Dr. Todd Kashdan is the best kind of cookbook – one that has all the necessary ingredients for readers to foment a powerful and principled revolution. It unites Todd’s formidable scholarship with his conversational and provocative storytelling to help readers cultivate skills in wise and productive rebellion. In a world where we contend with increasing polarity in politics – even regarding what is considered factual and what is not – Kashdan provides guidance and actionable skills to amplify skeptical voices and critical thinking into effective dissent. He makes the case that we need to listen more carefully and nurture our allies as well as those lone voices of opposition in our ranks. He argues that we need to study our opponents such that we gauge our arguments with precision. He also details obstacles to and costs of insurrection and makes the case that effective upstarts are skilled in leaning into difficult emotions and conversations with authenticity and openness. There is so much to be learned from this book.

The Art of Insubordination is nothing less than an evidence-based manual for changing the world.
On top of that, it is a great read – it’s fun, it is concise and convincing, it finds compelling stories behind the data it presents, and it is unflinching in its vision. As a friend and colleague of Todd’s, I can tell you his joyful, witty, and irreverent tone comes through its pages. I highly recommend this book – do yourself a favor and dive in. You will be very glad you did.

Thanks for the opportunity to be an advance reader of this book.

I absolutely love Rob Reich’s books, and he’s taught me so much, but I held off on getting this book for quite some time. All I could think was, “Oh great. Another book to tell me why technology and social media are bad,” but I was severely mistaken. My absolute favorite types of books are the ones that lay out the full scope of a problem rather than pushing ideas and opinions on the reader, and then, it gets the reader to ask themselves questions. That’s exactly what this book does. These problems with Big Tech are far more complex and nuanced than just needing more government regulation or controlling the spread of hate speech and misinformation. These authors present problems in each chapter and dive deep into the history and current discussions around each of the topics. I guarantee if you go into this book with firm ideas on Big Tech, you’ll leave with a completely different outlook, and that’s exactly what we need as we work on these issues together.

I was unfamiliar with the other authors of the book, but knowing Rob Reich’s style, I almost feel like Sahami and Weinstein did quite a bit of the heavy lifting with the writing. I may be wrong, but in any case, this was by far one of the best books I’ve read on the challenges we face with technology and absolutely recommend it.

I feel like this book was written for people like me ... people who sometimes struggle with how to stand up for ourselves and for what we think is right. I love that it is evidence-based but with written in an accessible and entertaining voice. A wonderful book from Professor Todd Kashdan.

If you've ever wanted to speak truth to power, row your own boat, or simply just be cool, Kashdan is your sensei and THE ART OF INSUBORDINATION is your guide.

This book grabbed me by the lapels in the first chapter, with the fascinating of story of all the Darwins before Darwin, and why he became famous while they died in flames. Then the cartwheeeling girl in the library who scribbled her number in the textbook. "She smiled and said something to the effect of, 'I can think of no other way of asking a boy out.' We went out and dated for over a year. She was the first woman I ever loved." Swoon.

Todd Kashdan is a RIDICULOUSLY well published and well-respected social psychologist--an h-index of 99 means he has 99 papers with at least 99 cites. That's, like, tippy-top percent. His main jam is well being: anxiety, stress, relationships, and how to be happy. So when Kashdan writes about insubordination, he does so with great knowledge, passion and compassion. This book isn't some superficial GO GET 'EM, TIGER!!! manifesto, it's a, "So you want to rumble? Here's some protective gear. And watch out for the rocks over there. I've got your back. GO GET 'EM TIGER!" kind of book. And it's absolutely beautiful.

Right now it's 8am on publication day, and I've been up since the wee hours reading it and laughing to myself. When my husband walked into the kitchen rubbing his eyes just now, I jumped on him squealing that we need to gift THE ART OF INSUBORDINATION to all our activist friends. And not just to them. To everyone. It should be required reading.

This book could change everything.
