This is one of those books which you often see in the Asian section of bookstores, purporting to relate some long, lost mystical secret of the Orient, but actually offering up junk psychology in Asian garb.

The conceit of this book is that it is offering up ancient, accepted wisdom. However, it certainly is not, The Thick Black Theory has its origins in the writings of Li Zongwu (1879-1944), a failed bureaucrat in the late Qing Dynasty. Li felt that the path to success lay in the pursuit of unbridled selfishness and narcissism without any concern for the welfare of others (having a black heart), while hiding that fact through deceit and rank hypocrisy (having a thick face). While some people in Chinese history (indeed, in Western history as well), may have behaved in this way, such behavior was never held up as virtuous or even wise in traditional Chinese thought. However, Li and Chin-Ning Chu would have us believe that there is virtue in being wicked, and that being wicked has always been acceptable in Chinese society.

Chin-Ning Chu tries to buttress her argument by claiming that many successful people in Western history have in fact utilized the same strategy. The problem is that none of her examples can even withstand the most cursory scrutiny. Her examples were by and large not acting selfishly and were often quite clear in their motivations. Their faces were not thick, and they certainly did not have black hearts.

One could argue that the Thick Black Theory is actually a restatement of Machiavelli's philosophy. However, there is a crucial difference between the two. In Machiavelli's philosophy, the prince may hide his motivations and may at times act selfishly, but it is always for the good of the state, and therefore for the people living in the state. As much as Chin-Ning Chu may try to protest otherwise, at heart Li's theory is concerned purely about personal success. It is all about gaining power for oneself and imposing one's will upon others, and not about the betterment of society. Indeed, a person with a true thick face and black heart would feel that other people exist purely to serve him and for his personal benefit. How could a society filled with such people advance and find prosperity? Chin-Ning Chu tries but fails to explain how living according to the Thick Black Theory makes for a better world. In the end, all we are left with is a roadmap for being a selfish bastard in order to find personal success.

Nice book. Gives a very good insight on how to be victor and not a victim. By reading this book you get an impression that nobody's perfect as a matter of fact everybody has done something in their lives that they thought was really grossly stupid or out of line. But at the end of the day life is not about what you've done before but if you are willing to accept yourself and move on. Life is about how far are willing to go to pay the price to success. The people who accept themselves their (strengths and weaknesses) fast and do the right thing in life become victors. The people who go about questioning themselves and asking trying to understand why they did something stupid end up doubting themselves, wasting time and don't grow they end up becoming victims. Very insightful book about deception and how power and influence shift.

This book was strongly recommended to me by my master. As soon as I opened it, I knew that this would be one of the greatest books, which I had a chance to get my hands on. This review will never be able to explain and do justice to the actual contents of what is inside.

Ms. Chin-Ning Chu has been a consultant for various organizations. She has been a business liaison between American and Asian Corporations for many years. She gave speeches and conferences on variety of subjects in business development and success in the personal life. She has been developing a system Thick Face Black Heart, which is based on the very ancient philosophy, on how to make yourself be more efficient to the outside world. This book is one of her many ventures and it is the first one I had a chance to read.

Thick Face is the way that the others perceive us. Black Heart is the way we act and what measure we are willing to take to achieve and accomplish Thick Face. In the Asian philosophy, Thick Face, the way the others see you, your honor and your face is very important factor. To Asian people, loosing a face is worst then loosing a fortune.

There is a little story in the book, about an ancient Chinese warrior. One day on his way home, two hooligans, who wanted to cause trouble, confronted him. They said, that the young man should fight them or crawl on his hands and knees back to the village. The young warrior got on all fours and crawled all the way back the village, embarrassing himself in front of everyone. He lost his face in front of people and had not proved himself being worthy. Later on, that young man while fighting the enemy’s army proved to be one of the greatest Chinese heroes. The moral of the story is, that for the young man to prove his Thick Face, he had to fight an unskilled person, whom he would have easily defeated and probably killed. So, he felt that to exercise the Black Heart to achieve his honor, he would rather show it in the battle and not do it against someone who is not worthy.

There is a way we can achieve our personal Thick Face, without exercising the Black Heart, unless absolutely necessary. For example the doctor performs a surgery and in order to make someone feel better, he has to exercise a tremendous amount of Black Heart in order not to feel like he is hurting a person at the moment. A manager has two fire a few people in order two save the jobs of hundreds. Even though someone might say that it is a cruel way of doing things, but in order to achieve a proper level of success, the person has to use force of, what some might call, an unethical measures.

In modern western society, we put a lot or enthuses on measuring personal success by the amount of income a person has generated. There is a lot of pressure from the outside and within on how we measure our personal achievement. In the eastern philosophy, success is a measure of personal achievement. The success is directly related to the accomplishment of one’s goals. May it be a personal satisfaction, a task of some sort or a financial gain, but it is within a person to set that standard for him or her self.

The book also uses a variety of metaphors to explain how to implement the information and posses a proper balance of Thick Face Black Heart theory. One of the ones the author stresses out is about a Fox and a Tiger. The Fox is a small animal, who is not as noticeable in the woods and can easily be killed by other bigger and stronger animals. The Fox knows how to associate herself with a Tiger, therefore creating an image of being in the company of a much larger beast. Even if the Fox is not directly associated with the Tiger, the perception that the Tiger cares about the Fox's well being, makes the Fox feel safe and protects her from the rest.

In the real life we can always use the same methodology in our business and every day life. When we associate ourselves or create an image that we are associated with an important or more powerful entity, the others are fearful and more inclined to take us seriously. We can make the others, whether it is in business or in friendships take us with a greater level of respect, because we perceive, that a much larger and stronger force is backing us.

The basic idea in the nutshell behind the book is that we have the power within us to develop a winning, efficient and self-motivating persona, which will be more appealing to the outside world and ourselves. How much will we be willing to contribute in order to do it? Is everyone capable of demonstrating the Thick Face Black Heart theory? Can people create their own limitations and except them, and what it takes to break out from the every day situations and get the most for our personal satisfaction without hurting others. The book uses a lot of famous quotes by great philosophers, thinkers and leaders. There is definitely more then what can be laid out in this opinion.

I have never seen a book, where the content of personal motivation and self-achievement was explained in such great detail. This book is not for self-motivation or for business success, it is about life and how to live it to the fullest potential. I was told that the first time you read this book, only 10% of information would penetrate and stay in your head. It is absolutely true. I will definitely have to read this one again, to get more out of it.

Sometimes these eastern mysticism/self-help books make me feel mean.

Reading them are like watching Kung-Fu movies. I mean, c'mon be honest, after you watch a Bruce Lee movie don't you feel like giving somebody a karate chop? (Even if it's only the mailman.)

Thick Face, Black Heart delivers on fueling the desire to karate chop the mailman. How could it not with "Black Heart" in the title? This book is about wiping your enemies out. But it's about much more, as well.

It's really a hodge-podge of things. Like scattershot. There's no coherent philosophy here. But, now pay attention, there are a lot of very good ideas here. Deep ideas.

Know the churchy type? How's this (Chu's) take on that:

For a truly spiritual individual, the path of spirituality is like walking on a razor's edge; it is a diligent pursuit of one's perfection. However, for others, the pursuit of spirituality is merely a vague notion; it actually is a pretext, an excuse to practice inertia and avoidance of life's challenges.

Take that you spiritual phonies! (Not you, well...)

Want some intensity?

Within each one of us, we have this ever-present suspicion that we are much greater than our circumstances. The potential for who we are and what we could be is so vast that we have not begun to scratch the surface. We know we will not find security within us until we have touched all the Void with our mind and our soul.

If that doesn't get you staying on your diet or hanging with your exercise program nothing will.

Have enemies? (Yeah, the karate-chopping vibe is never far off in this book. "Hai ya!") That's a bad thing, right? Wrong.

The battle with the cunning and ruthless often is not about conducting a battle with outside forces. Encountering the cunning and ruthless stimulates the dormant strengths within us and allows us to bring forth extraordinary abilities that we are not in touch with under normal circumstances.

Think Leno vs. Letterman. Bush vs. Clinton. Wile E. Coyote vs. the Road Runner. Would any of them achieved the heights they did without the other?

I could go on forever but since you've already read longer than you intended I'll close with this last one.

It's from a section on crisis. (the true nature of crisis is an opportunity)

Without the strength to endure the crisis, we will not see the opportunity within. It is within the process of endurance that opportunity reveals itself. Opportunity always exists within a crisis situation, but when we lose heart in a devastating crisis, we are blinded by our emotion. When we can calmly endure the unendurable, the opportunity for a better alternative surfaces and reveals itself.

Think about it—the times of overwhelming emotional stress blind us, bind us, render us immobile. If we can somehow manage to stay conscious, to think clearly through those crises we can discover great opportunities.

Thomas Edison said, There is great value in disaster.

Yes, and in Thick Face, Black Heart, as well.

I would summarise TFBH by Chin-Ning Chu "do whatever you want and don't worry about what people think". A reasonable proposition. Chu dresses up this insight to book length with advice on how to be shady in dealings with people, how to be ruthless and hypocritical in getting what you want, and then sleep well at night.

Chu shares illustrative anecdotes from her own life and others she knows about. To support her thesis she has visions while sunbathing in Sydney, quotes Hindu scripture and even gets Einstein on side. The book is riddled with religious references. She presumes the existence of a divine Maker who has a Grand Purpose and who has given us TFBH as the way to go.

While ploughing resolutely through the book I was wondering if TFBH was like a disguise one wears, an acting role one adopts, or like a special set of clothes. How do you get it? I wondered. At the end of the book we learn that the source of this TFBH is within us, a familiar concept in spiritual writings. To get at it Chu espouses seven "centering techniques" so we can talk to God about it. These techniques include a bit of Yoga in a rocking chair, gongs and bells, saying "God" a lot, listening to celestial music, advice on how to handle our own visions and the Kama Sutra (you'll probably want to go buy the book now).

But she doesn't claim to have invented any of this. She is "merely a vehicle" conveying the "timeless wisdom of natural law", inspired by Mr Lee Zhong Wu, a disgruntled early 20th century failure (by Chu's standards). Lee's treatise called Thick Black Theory described "an illness in Chinese society". Chu writes that Lee's book was banned in China because the authorities "felt he was advocating the immorality he depicted". It seems to me (correct me if I'm wrong) that Chu is basing her advice on deceitful behaviours observed by Lee in 1910s Chinese society.

If this is the Chinese operating manual for politics and business, beware. I gave the book one star because I learned something from it.

Q:

To see why see why I love Chin Ning Chu’s masterful book, just read some of the 45 reader reviews on amazon.com: “Motivation and success book for grown-ups.” “Machiavelli meets the Dalai Lama.” “You need no other book!”

Granted, no single book will suit every taste. So it is not surprising that some readers criticize this one. It takes on a gargantuan task: seeking to explain something of the Asian way of thinking to Western folks. Yet with China soon to be the number 1 trading partner for MANY world nations, this is an explanation we all need.

Meanwhile, suffice it to say that I myself have read the book multiple times--and I am clearly not alone in this. Thick Face, Black Heart is a masterpiece of contradictions. Yes, it’s a book for business people--yet it’s deeply and satisfyingly philosophical. Yes, it’s “theoretical”--yet it’s filled with fascinating illustrative anecdotes, enlivened by the voice of a natural storyteller. Yes, it’s serious, cerebral, and complex--yet it’s a bona fide page-turner!

Even if you feel you’ve had enough of motivational books, you may want to give one last look at this one.

I agree with the author that "Thick face" is essential thing for people nowadays. However it is not really new cause there are many books talk about that, just like ignore everything and believe in yourself. Therefore "Black Heart" is perhaps an oustanding point in this. Doing anything to reach your goal because you think its benefits are worthier than its consequences. In my opinion, there are many ways to reach a goal so it is not necessary to do something bad to reach that and I wonder if how many people are good enough to ensure its benefits is greater than its consequences. In addition, you are aware that you have done something bad to get a victory so if you feel good about that. Finally, if everyone has a "black heart" making them ready to do anything to reach their goals which they believe are the right things, i do not think the society is going to be fine.

Chin-Ning Chu's "Thick Face, Black Heart" is an approach to life apparently based on ancient Chinese values, that is to be applied to personal life and business interactions.

Although a promising read at face value, "Thick Face, Black Heart" is anything but. It is bloated (about 300 pages too long), with chapters frequently losing their focus because of (way) too many commandent-like lists and strange, tenuous metaphors. Chin-Ning Chu frequently quotes prominent Eastern and Western figures over the past few centuries, granting them semi-divine status, bastardising the quotes' meanings to fit with her philosophy.

Chin-Ning Chu's writing comes across as quasi-prophetic and arrogant, seemingly advocating ruthlessness, deceit and bullying to get your way.

Do not read this book. If it is as widely read as the author claims, it is no wonder there is such a prevalent bullying and cut-throat culture among business professionals.

As somebody already said: A lot of gems, but they are stuck under arbitrarily and esoteric maxims. I feel like the theory is arbitrary thought of and just a mix of different wisdom she collected and now presents as "the one" theory to conquer life. I don't like the way she displays it in the book.
As I bought it for 2.49€ it was worth it, but I would not buy it for any more money.

Pros:
- A lot of important and true messages
- Good content
- Great mix of christian religion and eastern religions.

Cons:
- Repetitive
- Author claims that everything said is 100% the truth
- Readers are referred to as "Thick Face Black Heart Practitioners" which makes me personally cringe, but that's just my opinion.

I would put this book as a must read for almost everyone - people who are just starting to work or even for people who have enough experience. Lot of what the author says rings a bell within you somewhere and you are able to relate to the content very easily. The book is written in easy style and prose that is very practical and easy to follow. Overall, a great book without all the management mumbo jumbo!

I’ve tried twice to read this but thought it unnecessarily long. I did not agree with statements such as “we’ve been taught all our lives that being nice is the most important - for example, we study hard to please our teachers”. That might be true for some people, but not everyone is extrinsically motivated.
An attempt to create a framework for life and argue that it fits, but falls short for me.

As someone who wants to face-down their insecurities, because bottom-line, those prevent us from achiving great relationships and success in life, I found this book a help. It is one that I will need to go back and read every other year, much like "How to Win Friends and Influence People", to apply continueous improvement to my own life.

Thick Face Black Heart ( TFBH) is an Interesting “ eastern style” self help / personal development book.
Thick Face Represents “the shield’ and Black Heart, represents “the spear”

If you are a consumer of self help style books, you will have heard many of the ideas, but the eastern slant was appealing to me. The author suggests that as you particle TFBH gradually you see no division or conflict between the spiritual world and the mundane world. Your spiritual strength will become an “ essential tool” to conquer day to day realities.

As a long term mediator and follower of Zen Buddhism and other eastern philosophies, I was moved by Chapter 3; Dharma: The Wish Fulfilling Tree.
The author explains that Dharma is the understanding of appropriate action for any given circumstance. It means to act in accordance with one’s duty. To me this means taking appropriate action - based on my intuition and reason in each situation.

I was also motivated by Chapter 6: “The magical power of endurance” Again, nothing new in self help, but always a good reminder especially when the going gets tough. How to endure? just keep enduring! “ Greatness is knowing how to suffer the insufferable and endure the unendurable” Ms Chu also suggests that “ as long as we are fighting the battle courageously the magic unseen hand of the divine is there to aid. Good to remember that!

Chapter 8 was a new idea to me: “ Deception without deceit” As a business owner who puts a high value on transparency and honesty, The idea at first made me a bit uncomfortable. The author suggests that we all. Practice deception but Westerners deny it and easterners glorify it. interesting.

All in all a good read, if you are the type that like self help / self improvement content. Especially if you are also into eastern philosophy.

Excellent book. Recommended for people pleasers, those who feel small or insecure, or have trouble with boundaries. I love the way this book combines spirituality with the practical, survival-based realities of life. I promise it won't turn you into a narcissist. I read it while trying to develop a healthier ego and stronger sense of self; I had issues with boundaries and always felt guilty for not pleasing others. I struggled to feel any genuine empowerment and was so tired of feeling threatened by the mere thought of disappointing someone. Even when I did what others desired, it never seemed like enough. People will naturally demand more of you until you step up for yourself and give them an unwavering "No."

I realized it's ok and often necessary to disappoint people. It may seem obvious but it was difficult for me to understand this emotionally. This book helped me feel less guilty for getting out of an increasingly codependent and unhealthy friendship. Often, you'll need to feel as if you're better than a situation in order to remove yourself from it, while being humble keeps you trapped.

Had I read TFBH two years ago, I probably would have been repulsed and not finished it. Now I realize the value in developing a healthy ego. I have become a more functional, ambitious, confident person. It helped my spiritual side merge with the reality of life. I'd also never heard of the concept of "dharma" but it's my new favorite word. Great book if you're ready to read it. Will help those who struggle to be assertive but are ready to be empowered.
