The Grimy And The Greedy is a paranormal thriller with a bit of a comedy sub theme; in short it is about the death of a woman and her long reach from the grave.

Fizzy is at work when she learns of her Grandmother’s death; the news does not come as too much of a shock as few people liked the woman. Fizzy even throws a party to celebrate. However, Grandma Jeanette is still pulling strings from her grave and one of those demands is that Fizzy will attend her funeral.

Jeanette also holds a bar owner to a favour that he owes her; he is given the task of getting Fizzy to the funeral, or his own mother will die.

The story is fast-paced and full of twists, so much that at times I wasn’t quite sure what was happening. It’s a mix of dreams, fantasy and the supernatural all drawn together by colourful descriptions and language; I wouldn’t recommend it to those easily offended by swearing.

Admittedly, this one didn't do it for me the way Girl: Repurposed did. I don't know if it just wasn't as polished or if the plot didn't engage me as much, but whatever the reason, I just didn't enjoy it the way I did GR.

That being said, I did still enjoy it. I like that the characters are a mess, complete human disasters looking for a place to happen. I like that they're not always likeable, relatable, or strong; it does me good to see characters that are average, human, weak in body or mind--because that's where some of their most human qualities shine through. And while I couldn't relate in all ways, 1) That's a good thing, we're not all meant to relate and 2) What I could relate to had so much more meaning as a result.

The messed up family dynamics. The unconventional reaction to a family member's passing... These things, while playing out behind a satirical lens, were also profoundly felt. So much did I commiserate with Fizzy's misery about her grandmother, I half expected Jeannette to still be alive by the end.

Overall an interesting read, and one I'd recommend for anyone looking for serious themes viewed through a not-so-serious perspective.

The Grimy and The Greedy is a quick, funny and engaging read. Once it gets rolling and grips you in, it's hard to put the story down.

When I heard about the premise of the story, I was instantly hooked by it's high concept.

We follow the lives of Fizzy and Fiddy, which (thankfully) doesn't get that confusing, as they try to resolve their own grievances with the particularly nasty, and now deceased, Jeanette Sobriquet. I thought that the way Jeanette had long lasting impacts on all the characters, even after her death, says something about the lingering effects of toxic and manipulative behaviour... If you want to read into that is.

This story is told from a third person perspective. We're able to hop between the perspectives of our two main characters and we also get inside the mind of at least one other character as well. What I liked most about this story was the way the writer describes and sets the scene. I was both impressed at the writing and also laughing at some of the references. There's also a ton of diversity in this book when it comes to our characters' race, sexuality, age and general representation. The way the Bosnian themes was written makes me think that our author has a friend or at the very least acquaintance from that area.

Also the author doesn't hold back on crass and crude humour. Definitely a plus for me!

*Mild spoiler?* I'm also happy that as far as I can tell, the book was not left on a cliffhanger. Ultimately I appreciated that.

Only some minor critiques. If you're the kind of person who doesn't like dream sequences in your horror, the various dream sequences and (I guess) alternative reality scenes may irk you. Every now and then I did find myself confused about where we up to with characters, only to find it was a dream or nightmare.

There's a lot of snappy dialogue and jokes being passed around by all our characters. I appreciated the uniqueness but felt it to be a bit too much at times.

All in all, a fun and fast read that had me laughing irl on the train.

A crazy and fun read! This book has an intriguing start that pulled me right in. I enjoyed the characters, especially Fizzy and Zeno. I absolutely loved how well developed their friendship is. 'Jelly buns' is now my new favorite term of endearment ever. The rising action in the book is very well-paced, where things just keep getting worse and worse for our MC, Fizzy, and you begin to question what's real and what isn't. I also loved PJ and some of the imagery in this book was very wild and inventive. My only drawbacks are that when it came to POV shifts, it was a little confusing and sometimes took me a while to realize whose head I was in. The ending also left me very wanting. All in all, a very fun and thrilling book!

Meaghan never lets me down when I want to read a story that will make me laugh! In this hilarious paranormal thriller, Jeanette Sobriquet is dead and her granddaughter, Fizzy, is happy as hell! A bar owner named Affidious is forced to carry out the dead grandmother's last requests, otherwise, the ghost of a Bosnian war criminal will murder his mother. Fizzy, as with most of these characters, was so authentic and fun to read. I love the Sobriquet family and how vulgar, messy, and tastefully trashy they are. If you enjoyed "Girl, Repurposed" (Which featured Tranquila and granny) then you'll enjoy this! There isn't a moment in this book that will bore you.

2.5 rounded up. It felt like it was missing something. The end was just sort of meh. The premise was kind of interesting but needed more. Maybe more background.

This is a short, quick trip into a nightmarish hell of a trippy, dark horror-comedy fantasy read.

Main character Fizzy’s grandma has died and no one (including Fizzy) much cares as they all hated the evil old woman. But it turns out she still has ways to torture them after her own death, sending ghostly murders, monsters and a cascade of horrific visions, all with the intention of forcing Fizzy to attend her funeral.

I quite enjoy the odd trip into books that read like a fever- or drug-induced hallucination of the surreal and scary, but will have to admit that I was a bit put out with this book on finishing it. I never really understood WHY granny Jeanette was so determined for Fizzy to attend the funeral but thought all would be made clear at the finale. Instead it felt like the story just ran out of steam at the funeral, leaving me wondering why someone would put in all that occult effort with no clear end goal.

That said, I did enjoy the horribly unsettling read while it lasted, and was thoroughly shaken by the many many twists in the tale. This is one for horror fans who enjoy the chaos of darkness and don’t really need a lot of plot behind it.

What in the fresh hell did I just read?

While I was expecting something a little quirky, I wasn't expecting this roller coaster ride of freakishness to warp my brain in such a way that it made me question my own sanity at times.

The Grimy and the Greedy is a twisted treat waiting to haunt you in your afterlife. Damn you, Jeanette. See you in hell.

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
