Col John Patterson was recently interred in a military cemetery of the Jewish Legion in Israel, with Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu in attendance. Netanyahu's brother Yonatan - killed at Entebbe - was named after this man, who was his godfather. This is an important account of the first truly Jewish military unit since the days of the Romans, directly involved in the reconquest of the Land of Israel during World War 1. An important read for its insights into Jabotinsky, Trumpeldor, the Balfour Declaration, and the antisemitism evident in the British military command in this theater of operations.

A fascinating first-hand account of the building of would become the Israeli Defense Forces between during World War I and the conditions in Palestine at that time, including the anti-Semitic bias of the governing British authorities.

JOHN Henry Patterson is a hero of mine from his contribution in saving Ulster from Home Rule whilst leading West Belfast UVF to his loyal leadership of the Jewish Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers. In the face of constant obstacles being placed in his way he remained steadfast to the Zionist cause. Patterson is a hero of Ulster and Israel ...we salute you.
