Brand new: An unprecedented catalog of modern trademarks Modernist aesthetics in architecture, art, and product design are familiar to many. In soaring glass structures or minimalist canvases, we recognize a time of vast technological advance which affirmed the power of human beings to reshape their environment and to break, radically, from the conventions or constraints of the past.Less well-known, but no less fascinating, is thedistillation of modernism in graphic design. With the creation of clean visual concepts, designers sought to move away from the mystique they identified with the commercial artist, and to counterbalance an increasingly complicated world with clarity. This unprecedented TASCHEN publication, authored byJens Muller, brings together approximately 6,000 trademarks, focused on the period 1940 1980, to examine howmodernist attitudes and imperatives gave birth to corporate identity. Ranging from media outfits to retail giants, airlines to art galleries, the sweeping survey is organized into three design-orientated chapters: Geometric, Effect, and Typographic. Each chapter is then sub-divided into form and style led sections such as alphabet, overlay, dots and squares.Alongside the comprehensive catalog, the book features an introduction fromJens Mulleron the history of logos, and an essay byR. Roger Remingtonon modernism and graphic design. Eight designer profiles and eight instructive case studies are also included, with a detailed look at the life and work of such luminaries asPaul Rand, Yusaku Kamekura, andAnton Stankowski, and at such significant projects asFiat, The Daiei, Inc., and theMexico Olympic Games of 1968. An unrivaled resource for graphic designers, advertisers, and branding specialists, Logo Modernismis equally fascinating to anyone interested in social, cultural, and corporate history, and in the sheer persuasive power of image and form. Text in English, French, and German "
This book is huge! It's almost an A3 in size and weights about 5kg, one of the pretties books I ever laid hands on. That been said, let's move on.
The book consists of 6 Chapters. Logo Viva Modernism! and then divided into sections of Geometric, Effect and Typographic. (Each one of them has a case study. Profiles
The contains a collection of about 6000 logos from 1940 till 1980. I'll probably keep visiting it every now and then so I could take it all in. I don't wanna saturate my mind with all the amazing ideas. It's a must have for any artist slightly interested in logos and patterns. It's a bit on the pricey side but totally worth it. A classic in the making.
This is the gold standard for logo design references to have in a Graphic Designer’s arsenal. This book is absolutely massive and has so many jumping off points to explore almost any logo project you’ll come across.
Wonderfully put together, comprehensive and very rich. Particularly enjoyed specific case-studies and biographies. Classification system & index let it down a bit. I know the problem of discovery and classification is not easy. But the index is weak and I'm afraid it will be very hard to find what you might need further down the line.
This is an amazing logo reference book for graphic designers. 6000 logo designs between 1940-1980. This is the biggest, heaviest, and most expensive logo design book I have ever bought. The weight of this book is 10kg. Excellent paper quality
As a logo designer, I need references for designs. Old fashion, Bauhaus style, Geometrical, Lettermarks, Wordmarks, Circles, Squares, Golden Ratio etc. If you check top logo design books you will see this book in almost every list.
This book was not available in my country. I was thinking to buy this book since 2016 but never got a chance. On Amazon, small size was available and was more expensive than this. In 2019 I got a chance to buy this book from eBay at the best price at that time around 59 USD. After a month I received this book in a heavy 20kg bag from Royal Mail.
Since then this is the beacon of my library. Got a chance to finish this book this month after 2 years. Bought this book in 2019 and finished it in 2022 this is how big it is :) just kidding.
"Logo Modernism" is the quintessential guide for any designer, offering a rich repository of brand logo designs for reference and inspiration. Essential for crafting new brandmarks or icons, it provides a historical overview that encourages innovation and creativity. This book is a crucial tool for designers aiming to elevate their work by drawing on past excellence. A must-have for navigating the complexities of brand identity with insight and originality.
You can't really “read” this book, I guess, since it's mostly for visual inspiration. It's a beautiful tome of beautiful work, even though the categories feel a bit random. Would recommend to anyone who needs a nice reference book to review ideas and realize that everything is a remix.
This is a rock solid book on logos. Page after endless page of cool logos in typical high-quality Taschen fashion. However, I bought it alongside Logo (revised edition) by Michael Evamy, and I can't help but notice that even though the print quality is worse and it has only 1.6k logos to this book's 6k, I somehow like it more. Logo has significantly better organization and a short snippet about every logo, compared with Modernism's date, country, and industry metadata. I had originally thought that I would buy the other books in the Modernism series, but at a price of ~$60, I'll be refraining.
SUCH a cooooool book to see where a lot of logos evolve from, generate ideas, and learn about iconography. It's really fun to read about the history of how logos came about, too.
