"Lives" is a series of biographies of famous Greeks and Romans by the ancient Greek historian Plutarch who lived during the first and second century AD. The work consists of twenty-three paired biographies, one Greek and one Roman, and four unpaired, which explore the influence of character on the lives and destinies of important persons of Ancient Greece and Rome. Louie L'Amour used to refer to Plutarch in just about every one of his western stories. Off handed comments about books the characters have read. I can't imagine cowboys who could hardly read, getting through this book! I'm a college graduate and have had to read one or two pages, then put it down (for about a week) before I can pick it up again and try to struggle through it. There is no way that the cowboy has "read it 3 or 4 times"!

I bought my copy elsewhere, and I have to say the stories of the various kings and generals are very useful to me in my business, dealing as I do with men of all stations in society. My copy is in the original Latin, which I can read easily. I find Plutarch's essay on Julius Caesar very useful. I read Plutarch's lives every year.
