This is a good book for people who are developing a general interest in art - it's a very brief, broad overview that focusses on the very well-known pieces, best used as a starting point to figure out what you're interested in exploring. It also gives some pointers on some pieces that might be of interest if you'd like to know more about a particular movement, theme or technique.
I was expecting it to have a bit more of a commentary on art from outside the western perspective than it did: I thought there might be more about Egyptian, Arabic and art from across Africa, Russia, China and Asia and the subcontinent. While there are mentions here and there, as it is it's very focussed on European and American art.

Muy buena introducción al tema separada por épocas y movimientos, obras, temas y técnicas y materiales. Descubrí muchas obras y es excelente para tener una vista muy global de la historia del arte en un redacción que facilita la lectura aún sin tener grandes conocimientos artísticos.

Bu nasıl bir güzellikti! Her sayfasında kalbimden sayfalara sevgi aktı desem abartmam. Sindire sindire, eserleri didik didik ederek okumayı hedeflemiştim ve öyle de yaptım. Hatta bu sefer daha dikkatli bir sanat tarihi okumaya çalıştım çünkü genellikle sanat kitaplarını bitirdiğimde sonradan fark ediyorum ki istediğimden daha az bilgi zihnime kazınmış oluyor. Sanatın Kısa Öyküsü kitabı tam anlamıyla ismini yansıtıyor. Kitapta sırasıyla akımlar, eserler, temalar, teknikler detaylıca insanlığın başından günümüze dek inceleniyor. Kitabın en sevdiğim özelliklerinden biri ünlü ressamların daha az bilindik eserleri üzerinden inceleme yapılmasıydı. Sadece keşke kapağına Mona Lisa eserini koyma klişeliğinden birazcık uzak olsaydı. Kendi açımdan şunu söyleyebilirim ki akımları çok karıştırıyordum ve bu kitapla beraber kafamda istediğim gibi nihayet oturdu. Açıkçası ben daha ziyade bu tarz sanat bilgisi için başlangıç seviyesinde daha basit içerikli bir kitap bekliyordum ama tahmin ettiğimden daha detaylı bir anlatımla karşılaştım. Tek kelimeyle bayılarak okudum, kitabı okurken eserleri incelerken modum öyle yüksekti ki kitap hiç bitmesin istedim. Sizlere de bol keyifli okumalar dilerim..

Brief summary of some profound artworks and also comprehensible explanation of art- movements. It’s like a pocket hand book, every art-lover must have it in their shelves. It’s not a detailed reading so don’t expect that much.

"Petite histoire de l'art" est une très bonne introduction à l'histoire de l'art pour celles et ceux qui souhaitent en apprendre les bases.
Mes connaissances dans ce domaine datant de mes années de lycée, je ne peux pas me prononcer sur la véracité des informations présentées. Cependant, je peux affirmer, avec mon regard amateur, que les informations sont claires, concises et captent l'attention du lecteur. Le tout est illustré par de nombreuses photos des œuvres et des courants artistiques présentés.
Seul bémol, les œuvres et courants artistiques présentés sont principalement européens ou américains. Si vous souhaitez en apprendre plus sur l'histoire de l'art d'autres régions du monde, passez votre chemin.

Історія, і справді, досить коротко написана, але це не позбавило її яскравості та різноманіття. Мінусом, як на мене, було повторення деяких робіт у кількох темах, коли можно було розширити кількість їх відображення.

Це непогана книжка, для того, щоб поверхнево ознайомити або зацікавити читача, для якого мистецтво – сіра пляма. Хороша верстка, якісний папір та загальні тези допоможуть зорієнтуватися і відрізнити бароко від рококо чи імпресіонізм від експресіонізму.
Але якщо ви вивчали курс з історії мистецтв, то вона мало що нового може розповісти вам. Очікував, що більше уваги звернуть на сучасне мистецтво, але авторка точково торкнулась основних понять. Якщо «Коротка історія фотографії» познайомила з митцями і пояснила деякі з технікак, не так часто використовувала одні й ті самі ілюстрації то «Коротка історія мистецтв» їй в цьому програє. Та й загалом, мені не подобається, як курс історії мистецтв концентрується на вибраних творах з Європи та північної Америки ігноруючи інші континенти.
Але якщо ви вивчали курс з історії мистецтв, то вона мало що нового може розповісти вам. Очікував, що більше уваги звернуть на сучасне мистецтво, але авторка точково торкнулась основних понять. This book favors a western view on art history. There is a large gap between the first movement (prehistoric) and the second (ancient greek and roman) that largely ignores Chinese, Egyptian, African, Oceanic, and various other art movements that are critical to art history. Second, there is no mention of photography which was also important to art history (I know photography has its own book in this series, however its very othering to the medium that is already a controversial topic in the art world). It would have been nice to at least acknowledge its importance.
Second, this book is a bit all over the place. I have a particular beef with the themes section. Under the theme, there are artists. Those artists were often not mentioned in the blurb. Instead completely new (as in not mentioned anywhere else in the book) artists were used as examples. The key developments tab also abruptly “introduced” other important information or individuals that would have been better further explained. Also, the images used also were redundant and sometimes frankly used in the wrong space. For example, a theme given was “Isolation”. Edvard Munch was used as an example but was then used on the next page under “death” when he wasn’t talked about there. Further, the themes/techniques section is the only place where non-western examples of art were mentioned. Pretty bogus.
It’s a decent read for anyone interested in art history, but don’t take it as the ultimate guide, as it majorly lacks in explanations/examples of critical pieces in time.

Годная, для начинающих, но не для начинающих (иными словами, с не совсем ясной целевой аудиторией), книжка про то, что можно увидеть, если постараться, в хитросплетении обнаженных тел, загадочных улыбках пятисотлетней выдержки и прочих занимательных штуках, служащих фоном для музейных селфи. И все же «Как смотреть на картины» Сьюзен Вудфорд мне понравилась куда больше.

Me parece que el libro cumple con lo prometido "Breve historia del arte", resume muy bien algunos, tal vez los más importantes, movimientos artísticos, luego viene un apartado en donde presentan algunas obras, con un breve análisis, luego los principales temas que se han representado en las pinturas y finalmente las técnicas.
Me gustó mucho y conocí muchas obras y artistas, aprendí el significado de algunos elementos, la historia de algunos materiales o técnicas que son muy comunes, pero perdemos de vista su origen, en resumen, me encantó.
Además, el diseño editorial tiene muy buena calidad, al igual que las impresiones.

"The Short Story of Art" is exactly what it says it is: a pocket guide to the main concepts, movements and works of art through the centuries, starting with Prehistoric art and the Lascaux drawings and ending with the 1990s Conceptualists.
It does not pretend to be an extensive history of the art, targeting the casual art lover and helping them discover some of the key elements in art history. It focuses on well-known works that people can easily recognize and through those, it explains the main art movements, the themes and techniques employed in those works. It can be a good starting point for the occasional museum goer or people who start to develop an interest in art.
I had fun with it, learned some new things and it helped me put some works into context.
However, there's one complaint I have to make, and that is that it's basically a Western Europe (with a little bit of US) art history. The Easternmost country it talks about is Austria. Other cultures are barely mentioned in passing and only in the Techniques chapter, as small references, but no major work or artist is actually showcased to the East of Vienna. Nothing at all from Africa, Asia, even South America or Eastern Europe. So don't expect it to be truly comprehensive, but it will help you navigate the Louvre, El Prado and the MET.

I studied history in college, but my art history knowledge is severely lacking. I work at an art museum and use this book to help me merchandise product. It offers summaries of key movements, works, and themes, allowing me to have enough context to merchandise throughly. Plus, it's interesting and I like that it also covers works and themes. As an overview for someone with a moderate interest in art history, it's been a great beginner's book.

Pretty good for a concise anthology, but very western centric. African, Asian, and other works outside the western sphere are mentioned from time to time, but were not the main focus of the book. Will need supplementary reading to get the entire scope of art history of the world.

Bardzo podręcznikowa. Dobra dla osób, które chcą się dowiedzieć o sztuce ogólnie. Tutaj mamy zdecydowanie ilość przed treścią. Mało szczegółów, bardzo dużo informacji. Podział książki na rozdziały niezbyt logiczny. Moim zdaniem lepiej by było gdyby dzieło z danej epoki znajdowało się koło zarysu historycznego. Dobra jeżeli ktoś chce się uczyć na jej podstawie, notować. Nie jest to książka do czytania „na raz”.

З одного боку шукала таку книгу про мистецтво: щоб коротко про основні напрями та роботи, щоб мати загальне розуміння. І ця книга цей запит закриває. З іншого боку, вона мені нудна. Я ледве її дочитала. Дуже багато про барокко, дуже дуже багато про релігійні мотиви. А я люблю модернізм і його тут значно менше, і тут значно менше про реально класні роботи, які існують, або взагалі про них не згадано.

Definitely recommended for anyone interested in art or art history but doesn't want to exactly read a huge book. This gives you the gist of some major art movements, techniques, some famous paintings, etc. It is pretty European & American art centric though, so if you're interested in Asian or other art you won't read about it in here.
This is a perfect read for someone who knows nothing about art and wants to know more without boring themselves to death with specifics. It has alot of photos with captions, so its a pleasurable & easy read. It's a good first stepping stone into maybe future reading if you enjoy the book.

Не знаю, на что я рассчитывала, когда начинала читать книгу "Главное в истории искусств" Сьюзи Ходж, состоящую всего из 210 страниц, но явно не на то, что получила, когда прочитала её. Прочитав книгу полностью я уже с полной уверенностью могу сказать, что правильным названием этой книги было бы "Главное в истории живописи Западной Европы" с подзаголовком "Галопом по Европам".
К сожалению, складывается впечатление, что для автора этой книги не существует творцов из Восточной Европы, Азии, Африки и других материков. Даже вдохновения культурами и искусством народов с других материков у западно-европейских художников будто бы не было. Можно ли считать достаточными в этом контексте присутствия упоминаний Казимира Малевича и Фриды Кало в этой книге? НЕТ. Они, как и многое другое, добавлено в книгу будто бы для галочки и в самом конце, где 1 или 2 раза вообще упоминается существование, например, ислама и буддизма, чтобы хоть на йоту содержание книги соответствовало громкому названию.
Да, в книге практически не существует религиозных тем для искусства, кроме античных мифов и христианства. Автор крайне мало затрагивает даже ИЗО в широком смысле: сплошная живопись, пара скульптур и пара инсталляций. Архитектура, фотография, графика и ДПИ, например, даже не упоминаются. В разделе "Техники" какая-то дикая солянка, где у автора мысль скачет от древности до Первой мировой войны, с огромными пробелами в информации.
В общем, не рекомендую эту книгу ни тем, кто хочет познакомиться с миром искусства, ни тем, кто с ним уже знаком. К сожалению, это одна из худших книг про искусство, что я читала 😩

До сих пор поражаюсь, как можно было в такую книжку-малышку уместить столько красоты и пользы. Я не очень-то разбираюсь в искусстве и потому в путешествиях редко хожу в галереи, но эта книга помогает таким как я прикоснуться к прекрасному.
Книга разделена на несколько частей: сначала мы узнаем про разные направления в искусстве за всю историю человечества (всё это с примерами известных картин), потом изучаем сами картины и их создателей, проходимая по самым популярным темам в искусстве и по техникам.
Ощущение от книги как будто я прошлась по Лувру с самым интересным гидом, не выходя из собственного дома 😊

Whaaaa oké, het heeft bijna een half jaar geduurd maar ik heb dit fantastische boek úít. Het boek doet echt precies wat de titel belooft: het is een kleine geschiedenis van de kunst. Ik kan dit echt aan iedereen aanbevelen die net komt kijken in de kunstwereld, en van heleboel een beetje wilt weten. Ik heb nu heel veel aanknopingspunten om me verder te gaan verdiepen, echt top. Ik heb dit boek (met een kleine tussenpoos) geleend van de bibliotheek, maar ik ga het waarschijnlijk zelf aanschaffen omdat het een handig naslagwerk is om er even bij te pakken. Echt blij mee, je loopt anders door musea nadat je dit allemaal tot je hebt genomen.

Дуже подобається ця серія книг, сподіваюсь її продовжать видавати українською і зможу познайомитись із всіма. Книга про мистецтво то справжня естетика, натхнення та настрій. Роздивлятись культові твори мистецтва, читати про них цікавинки, поглинати нову інформацію, насолоджуватись кожною сторінкою, все це про цю серію. Ну і сама якість видання - без нарікань.

Чудово викладена і тим не менш стисла історія мистецтва на прикладах епох, стилів, технік та конкретних витворів мистецтва.
Видання потішило: глянцеві сторінки, якісний друк, картини на 2 сторінки.
Попри всю любов до сюрреалізму, трохи шокована , що аж тепер вперше познайомилась з Максом Ернстом (власне, завдяки цій книзі).

Is more than okay, especially when considering this is a ~200 page pocket book. I got this to refresh on general happenings in art history and got more than I hoped for.
Just wish that, especially in the movement section, there would be more emphasis on why a certain change mattered or had long term effects, because some paragraphs go on to say how something was outstanding or revolutionary, but not for what reason other than "it's new".
