PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION PRIMARY AND SECONDARY BATTERIES SPECIALIZED BATTERY SYSTEMS FUEL CELLS AND ELECTROCHEMICAL CAPACITORS Includes new chapters on:
Battery modeling Battery electrolytes Lithium-ion batteries Battery selection for consumer electronics Batteries for electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid vehicles Batteries for electrical energy storage systems Batteries for biomedical applications Button cell batteries Batteries for military and space applications, including reserve water-activated and reserve military batteries Electrochemical capacitors
The 4th Edition of the Linden Handbook of Batteries is exceptional in that it recognizes the tremendous progress of the past ten years in this field. Billions of cell phones, billions of portable computer devices and ultimately hundreds of millions of electric vehicles, including electric two-wheelers that number around150 million worldwide today, will be in use because of the rapid advances in the battery technology accurately described in the 4th Edition. Dr. Reddy recognized that major changes have taken place since the last edition and incorporated them in a major restructuring of the Handbook. A new Chapter 29 reviews advances in batteries for electric vehicles including hybrids. The relative importance and future role to be played by Nickel-Metal-Hydride and Lithium Ion batteries are well discussed as both have unique contributions in the marketplace. Applications to the military and space that are so important to national security and earth information, like weather satellites, are highlighted in a new chapter that recognizes this important mission of batteries. Dr. Reddy also has wisely chosen to consolidate information in some chapters for greater access, like Reserve Systems now located with Specialized Battery Systems. The Handbook sectional authors are all very highly respected in their disciplines and some are know by this author. Overall this is an excellent Handbook that is timely and thorough for the most important technology of the 21st century.
