The Valmiki Ramayana: Vol. 1 Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 137 ratings

The Valmiki Ramayana remains a living force in the lives of the Indian people. A timeless epic, it recounts the legend of the noble prince Rama and his battle to vanquish the demon king Ravana.

Even before he is crowned king of Ayodhya, Rama is exiled to the Dandaka forests where he is accompanied by his beauteous wife Sita and loyal brother Lakshmana. Deep in the jungle, Sita is abducted by Ravana and taken to his island kingdom Lanka, setting into motion a dramatic chain of events that culminates in an epoch-defining war. Filled with adventure and spectacle, the Ramayana is also the poignant story of a family caught up in the conflict between personal duty and individual desires.

In Bibek Debroy’s majestic new translation, the complete and unabridged text of the Critical Edition of this beloved epic can now be relished by a new generation of readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read so far
Reviewed in India on July 10, 2018
Great Read so far. The translation is very well done and readable. I will go ahead and buy the rest of the two books to complete the collection.
Foot notes are really well thought out and helpful in giving more context regarding the sanskrit words, people, explaining various relationships within the story.

This might not be the appropriate place to ask this but since I did not find a way to ask this question as i did not find a Q&A section for this product so including it in my review here.. Can anyone confirm the number pages the paper back edition has ? It is listed as 512 pages on the product page but the paper back edition I received has around 410 odd pages: 380 pages with actual story, rest 30 odd pages with foreword, preface etc..,
The Kindle edition is also listed to have 512 pages. Is this a misprint on the product page ? It would be great if anyone can confirm this.

Good enough but inaccurate in places. Helpful to read it comparing with some other translation in verses that you may have some doubt about.
