She left all she knew to find who she could be . . .

She grows up in the wild wood, in a cave with her mother, but visions of a faraway lake drift to her on the spring breeze, scented with promise. And when she hears a traveler speak of Artos, king of Caer Leon, she decides her future lies at his court. So, brimming with magic and eager to test her strength, she breaks her covenant with her mother and sets out on her bony gelding for Caer Leon.

With her stolen hunting spear and mended armour, she is an unlikely hero, not a chosen one, but one who forges her own bright path. Aflame with determination, she begins a journey of magic and mystery, love, lust and fights to death. On her adventures, she will steal the hearts of beautiful women, fight warriors and sorcerers, and make a place to call home.

The legendary author of
Hild returns with an unforgettable hero and a queer Arthurian masterpiece for the modern era. Nicola Griffith’s Spear is a spellbinding vision of the Camelot we've longed for, a Camelot that belongs to us all.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"[A] queer Arthurian masterpiece for the modern era."
Los Angeles Times

"A pleasure to follow [and] a lovely flexing of Griffith’s strengths in short form."
The New York Times

"Spear is a fantastic excuse to dig into Arthurian legend, and it stands on its own as an enthralling read―an instant classic, born of classics."
Chicago Review of Books

"Griffith delivers on an impossible challenge: taking the all to familiar Arthurian saga and makes it fresh again, with a captivating hero and expert myth-making. Beautifully written and constructed."
Historical Writers' Association

"[A] beautiful, atmospheric novella, a queer retelling of an age-old myth that is a wonder to behold."
―Kerry McHugh, Shelf Awareness (starred review)

"Readers will appreciate this sparkling interpretation of Arthurian legend, which combines interesting historical detail with appealing, inclusive characters in a genuinely delightful way."
―Anna Mickelsen, Booklist

"Written in a lovely lyrical style . . .
Spear is a wonderful story to behold."
Manhattan Book Review

"Spear proves clever, surprising, and even strikingly original, a descriptor I wouldn’t use lightly of Arthurian literature."
―T.S. Miller, Strange Horizons

"Mesmerizing . . . A lyrical
bildungsroman drenched in the natural world [turns into] a fast-moving, violent suspense tale with stakes that are at once epic and personal . . . A marvelously concise epic that is entirely Griffith's own."
―Gary Wolfe, Locus

"Spear is more than adventure and romance; it’s also a rumination on what it means to ‘belong’ to someone else. How much of who we are is where (and whom) we came from? And how much is who we’re desperate to become? What if our destiny calls us away from a person who feels like we’re their destiny? What do we owe to those who love us? And what do we owe to ourselves? Griffith examines these ― very queer ― questions with both deftness and gravitas."
―Heather Hogan, Autostraddle

“There is magic in Nicola Griffith's words. Prepare to be enchanted.”
―John Scalzi, author of The Kaiju Preservation Society

"If Le Guin wrote a Camelot story, I imagine it would feel like
Spear: humane, intelligent, and deeply beautiful. It's a new story with very old bones, a strange place that feels like home. It's exactly what I needed."
―Alix E. Harrow, author of A Spindle Splintered

“Nicola Griffith braids the Percival tales to her own ferocious imagination, and the results are spellbinding. Her novel is a reclamation of the touchstones of Arthurian myth―skewering received notions with the sharp point of her pen. If that sounds too theoretical, let me also say that it's a screamingly hot canon-queering epic filled with bloody battles, and world-shaking magic.
Spear is an unprecedented and spectacular investigation of the Matter of Britain. I've been waiting years for this book about the once and future everyone else to exist.”
―Maria Dahvana Headley, author of The Mere Wife and Beowulf: A New Translation

"This fresh, emotionally immediate queer spin on the medieval tale of Percival and the Holy Grail reaffirms Griffith as a consummate storyteller . . . Steeped in period texture that brings remote history fully into the present, and lushly illustrated by Rovina Cai (
The Seventh Raven), this tale of destiny, belonging, and home is a genuine pleasure."
Publishers Weekly

“Breathtaking. Nicola Griffith knows what she’s doing.”
―Jo Walton, author of Or What You Will

“Gorgeous . . . This slim volume manages to capture its reader and tell a complete story in just under two hundred pages, something which many longer books don’t achieve . . . I spent most of 2020 reading every Arthurian retelling I could get my hands on, and believe me when I say that
Spear is truly one of the best.”
―Fabienne Schwizer, Grimdark Magazine

“Set against the backdrop of King Arthur’s court, Nicola Griffith’s
Spear is at once intoxicating, brutal, and entirely compelling. Readers will want to race through the novella to uncover the main character’s destiny as she fights to understand her place in the world, but they will linger over every word of Griffith’s lush prose. Fans of Camelot won’t want to miss this gorgeous take on the Percival legend.”
―Swapna Krishna, co-editor of Sword Stone Table

“Just dazzling!”
―Bruce Holsinger, author of The Gifted School

“A mesmerizing tale that manages to be both epic and immersive in a short, intimate span,
Spear gives us a vivid hero, a daring quest, and a clear-eyed reimaging of Arthurian legend.”
―Malka Older, author of State Tectonics

One of those books you can't out down. A coming of age story with an Arthurian backdrop. The skilled writing makes you feel, see and taste the fauna and the wildlife. You experience all of the landscape as of you were there. The author is an exceptional wordsmith. My only regret is that it was over too soon.

For me the best and most challenging part of this story was the voice. It (I think) is written to evoke Middle English, and the characters it references are the Gaelic heroes of the King Arthur myths. I found this setting and voice super fascinating, almost hypnotic when the author hit their stride.

For a novella this covers a lot of ground and took me a long time to finish. Part of this was the writing style — again, I loved it, super beautiful, but it slowed me down or forced me to reread at times because I didn’t understand what was being said/implied.

The queer themes were completely on point and amazing. If you like butch chivalry a la Gideon or Tain Hu, this will fill your heart with love and won’t betray you the way those previously mentioned books did. Overall a really fantastic Arthurian update with lots of diversity and a beautiful poetic writing style.

The book started with a unique style, then settled down into a great story. Not sure how this did not win the Nebula award.

A wild child and her mother living primitively within enchanted thorns. One day the child is drawn to explore the larger world, to work for her board until she finds more enchantments and begins to understand her destiny.

The research that went into creating this phenomenal work is mind-blowing and greatly appreciated. It conjured up a realism that intellectually is not real, but if it were, this would be it. I love a novel/book that challenges the imagination. Happy Reading Family

I like the story. Retelling of Arthurian legend is always fun, but I like my endings to be actual endings. .

I loved the writer’s novel “Hild”—was riveted by it— also “Ammonite.” This one sort of meandered along. I read it in fits and starts. The story and characters were interesting. I think maybe the pacing was off. I’m glad I read it, though.

This book was so interesting and full of information that I spent quite a lot of time on Google and learning history. I loved it! I needed to know what was going to happen so much that I literally read it in one sitting. This author is one of the most talented writers I have ever read. Her other books shine as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars everything she writes is a joy

I began reading Griffith with Hild, and I ration reading her books now so that I have more to look froward to. The characterisation is so strong, and the sense of place is so pervasive that you can feel transported anew by an element of story you have known your whole life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vivid, liquid prose.

Beautiful; like flowing water. The depth of characters, the sights, sounds, smells, landscapes are all made tangible through the girl. How she lives solidly each moment with her whole heart, utilizing all her senses; including ones now lost to so many. And because of this, a rich tapestry is woven of times long past; and mostly forgotten - but not entirely. There is danger and adventure in equal measures. Camaraderie, acceptance, and great loss and newfound love. But also a deep knowing of animals and nature and instincts, and above all else, heart. And this is something that can speak to all, if only the moment is given to listen. This book made my heart sing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A magnificent Achievement
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 21, 2022
Over the years I have read probably more than 200 Arthurian novels. Some were good, others awful, while others stood out from the crowd. Amongst those I would rate as exceptional - in no particular order - are The Once and Future King by T. H. White, The Green Man by Henry Treece, Sword at Sunset by Rosemary Sutcliff, the Crystal Cave by Mary Stuart, Mists of Avalon by M. Z. Bradley, The Acts of King Arthur by John Steinbeck. Kingdom of the Grail by A A. Atanassio, Firelord by Parke Godwin. Now a new book has got to be added to the list: one that comes close to my own personal favourite by Rosemary Sutcliff. This is Spear by Nicola Griffith. Her earlier book Hilde was a best seller and is striking and powerful. Her Arthurian novel is a feat of conjuring the past alive in the page, touching on the magical side of things with a degree of historical accuracy seldom achieved today. I was disposed to like this before I began it - knowing that it retold the story of Peredur with a gender swapped narrative which sings gloriously on every page. A raw and erudite feast that tells an old story on new ground. I very much hope that Griffith continues her adventure into an area she obviously loves. I don’t like to use the term ‘masterpiece’ too often, but I think this book deserves it. After 50 years reading, studying and writing about this topic I can still be surprised. I was this time. What a magnificent achievement!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Arthurian retelling that does everything right.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 8, 2023
The Arthurian legends are some of my favourite tales of all time and I have spent a lot of time reading various retellings and reimaginings. The best ones take a slice of the legend out of the whole and then go all in on that one area. This is one of the best ones. This is not a tale of Arthur but of one happening in Arthur’s realm and it reads like a bard’s song, resonating in my soul.

I do not wish to include any spoilers in this review - I would not want to take any of the joy of discovery in the first reading from anyone - so I cannot point to the many wonderful things in the work and say “look at how brilliantly this is done” was I would like to. Instead I will say that the way the magic is included is sublime, the way the relationships are handled is (to me) perfection, and the whole shape and flow of the story is masterful.

I cannot recommend Spear highly enough

A long Arthurian poem and a pleasure to read. Had been looking forward to it and was in a better place in the world for the reading of it.
