Theories of Political Economy

Rate this book
"Political economy" has been the term used for the past 300 years to express the interrelationship between the political and economic affairs of the state. In Theories of Political Economy, James A. Caporaso and David P. Levine explore some of the more important frameworks for understanding the relation between politics and economics, including the classical, Marxian, Keynesian, neoclassical, state-centered, power-centered, and justice-centered. The book emphasizes understanding both the differences among the overall frameworks of the theories and the issues common to them.

This study was a written as a textbook to be used for the under/graduate students. A discussion related to basic economic theoires is held. For me except for Mraxist approach the rest theories are in one or another way are detailed explanations of capitalist mode of production. For example, liberal, neoliberal or Keynesian approaches suggest explanations about different stages of capitalism. However, these theories are not critical about intrinsic law of capitalism which is based on surplus value (endless accumulation of capital). Marxism is a radical critique of capitalism's endless accumulation of capital. Even Keynesian economic policies are conjectural which is a reaction to socialist economies and also a response to capitalist crisis. It is a sort of synthesis which meant welfare state as an alternative to USSR and also to minimise the negative effects of the II.WW and overcome the crisis that capitalists suffered.

Unfortunately, I can’t remember a single of the 14 different theories of what politics means thrown at me on page 8 of the book nor can I tell how any of them differ from each other and further I can’t understand how any of them think that government, authority and power are bound up in its definition, fortunately I can rest assured that they do affect those things as the author has told us so. I suppose the main feature of this book is to generate a survey of political economy theories for undergrads. Even given that I would expect more interest from the authors in the reasons for and consequences of the theories they discuss at least a little. Instead, they rush through every theory as if they are a board middle school teacher who can’t wait to retire pointing out the plants on a hike through the woods with their class.

You will be stunned with such summaries as “Marx argued that capitalist economies have an inherent tendency towards crises involving the widespread unemployment of labor and the failure of product markets to provide adequate outlets for existing productive capacity of capital equipment” why did he come to this conclusion? Is this argument good? Are there historical examples that illustrate this point? Who cares? This isn’t a book for actually thinking about its subject merely to a observe those silly economic and political theorists running around.

Frustratingly, I will not learn anything from this book other than to be able to parrot summaries of theories so I sound smart.

As someone who knows nothing about the subject I cannot recommend a different book on the subject, however I can tell you that I quite enjoyed the last book I read Skyward by Brandon Sanderson which in my opinion covers the subject of how politics and economics can interact far more eloquently.

Read for my social and economic development policy class. I wasn't a huge fan of the way it was written- I found myself having to read a lot of it 2-3 times to understand what it was saying. But it does have a ton of useful information about different economic theories and ties them in well to political theory.

As always, my issue is with simplicity of language. I do not like it when complex sentences slow my reading pace. Nonetheless, the book is packed with lessons.
