Giveaway win!

I like to stay up to date with all the latest diet trends. In the past few months I've read several articles that make Intermittent Fasting sound like some new trend, but IF has been around for years. My mother was intermittent fasting back in the 90's. My dad still does it.

Gin Stephens the author of this book says intermittent fasting is for everybody but I don't know if its for me.

I have a history of disordered eating and as much as I might like to intermittent fast I know that it could send me down a bad path. Like I said my parents have intermittent fasted and it worked great for them but I know my brain and my brain would say something like

"Hey! if only eating 2 hours a day is good then why not forego eating all day?"

"Why not fast for a whole week?"

"Why not fast then feast then throw up everything you feasted?"

"Why not fast for days and workout until you feel dizzy and pass out?"

But that's just me. And I really don't think I would spiral but its possible.

I'm giving this book to my sister so she can try it out. I would love to try intermittent fasting(and I still might) because I agree with a lot of things I read in this book. Gin Stephens lays out how intermittent fasting has worked for her and she gives us testimonials from other IFers. She ends the book with nearly 60 pages of Frequently Asked Questions. I thought I knew about Intermittent Fasting but I learned even more.

Despite my concerns about my own history of disordered eating ( I mean its been over 15 years) I may give intermittent fasting a try. I'll just have to be very careful.

Recommended for people who want to know more about intermittent fasting or for people who already practice this lifestyle.

Gin’s first book, Delay, Don’t Deny, changed my life. But this book really is a step above: readable, full of facts, inspiring and motivating. So pleased that this resource exists!

I’ve been an IFer since discovering Gin’s first book, Delay, Don’t Deny. This week, I completed my 250th fast!

I started this journey back on October 15, 2019, and never looked back. When I began my practice (before I’d even read Delay, Don’t Deny), I had no idea how Gin Stephens and the DDD lifestyle would truly change my life and my health.

I started with 16/8, but found after a couple of days it was pretty effortless for me, and pushed to 18/6. I continued 18/6 for about three months, and at that point started extending a little further every day depending on how I felt. Pre-Covid, I would typically fast between 18 and 21 hours a day and OMAD (no restrictions). During Covid, I stuck to 16 hours minimum, more when I could… but it has been so much harder being at home full time! I did “quarantine” my scale at the advice of a friend and mentor, and it was the best thing I could’ve done. Now I’m back up to 18 or 19 hours a day consistently, and I know I have the tools in my toolbox to continue towards my goals and beyond. The release of FFR was such perfect timing as we come out of our stay-at-home mandate. Reading it has been inspiring, and reminded me of all the reasons I am committed to my IF practice. There is so much fascinating and helpful info, even if you’re already an IFer. In fact, after finishing today, I may just go back and reread sever chapters again!

The biggest win for me, though, is the freedom. I used to always think about food in some way... what was the healthiest choice; should I indulge in another glass of wine or that dessert or should I 'be good' instead; I probably shouldn't have the pasta or I should skip the bread. Now, I just eat. Plain and simple. I make what I want, I eat with my family (and the same thing they're eating, a particularly important message for my 15yo daughter). The best way to describe it is freedom... the food anxiety, the planning, the prepping, the worrying, the 'noise in my head,' is simply gone.

IF is the most natural and intuitive thing I have ever done. It costs nothing and requires nothing other than a commitment to yourself. I feel better than I have in a decade! I was down 20+ lbs and 2 sizes the last time I weighed in. My thyroid meds have been reduced twice. And I have been particularly grateful for my practice during our stay-at-home mandate. I don't often evangelize the way I did in the beginning, since it has just become the way I live my life. But I am so happy to share this milestone... 250 squeaky clean fasts! While there have been celebrations and indulgences and even a pandemic, I haven’t missed one single day since day one! 🔥

The best, most comprehensive Intermittent Fasting book I’ve read (and I’ve read a lot of them).
If you’re going to read one book that explains IF and it’s benefits (it’s a “health plan with a side affect of weight loss”), this is the one!
In the 6 months I’ve been intermittent fasting, I’ve lost weight, I’m wearing the smallest size I’ve ever worn, I’ve built muscle (hooray for a huge boost in human growth hormone that comes with fasting!), I’m sleeping better than I have in 10 years, my hair has grown like crazy, my hair has stopped falling out, I have scars that are disappearing (hooray for autophagy!), my appetite has been completely corrected, I’ve never had this much energy, I have fewer cravings, I’m much more aware of foods that cause inflammation/bloating/don’t sit well, my skin is tighter and looks better than it has in a long time..... I could go on and on. I will live (and love) the IF lifestyle for the rest of my life.

Wow! I received and ARC of this title and I am sold on the intermittent fasting way of life now! This book is a pleasure to read and fabulously researched. The nerd in me loves the pages and pages of references in the book. I am on my third week of IF thanks to Gin's well documented proof that IF changes lives.

2021: When I saw that Hoopla carried an audiobook of Gin Stephen's F.F.R., I didn't hesitate to click the "borrow" button. After months of alternate day fasting, I am seeing improvements in my appearance ever so slowly; even better, I feel so much better and don't dread walking up stairs.

Gin's FAST start = Fast clean, Adapt, Settle in, Tweak it till it's easy
I have lived this lifestyle for a few years, and I surely struggle more with the eating than with the fasting. By that I mean: I still overeat, I don't always make good food choices, I keep my insulin elevated on my "up" day (<-- a day I'm eating) with sipping my cuppa tea + half and half. I'm still on the threshold of the lower weight I've been in 30 years. My brain simultaneously says "Ugh!" / "Take hold of hope! You'll get to your goal eventually."

On the plus said, I'm 63, can hike up a mountain, and am happily on zero medications. I'm no longer prediabetic, but have been trying to outrun hypertension. I'll see how I'm doing next month at my annual checkup.

2020: There are many voices out there telling you how to eat, what to eat, when to eat.

Gin Stephen's subject is intermittent fasting, and her niche is the clean fast . That means no cream, no stevia, no flavored water, no lemon in the water, no gum, no mints while you are fasting. Almost no other "expert" is so clear and so crisp on insisting that a fast should be a fast. Black coffee, black tea, water. Period.

What a bitter pill to swallow. Clearly, zillions have lost weight drinking buttered coffees and cream teas. But Gin makes the case that all those additions spike insulin and make it both more arduous to fast and more burdensome to maintain the weight loss. My initial response was peace out! But a lingering stall forced me to ask myself what I was willing to relinquish.

Look at the results of hundreds in Gin's Delay Don't Deny Facebook group: WHOA!

I love this book; I love the science (<<--a phrase I never imagined saying); I love the lifestyle.

But does it work? you ask. My answer is: yes, but slowly. I'm on the threshold of my lowest weight in thirty years.

I'm such a big fan of Intermittent Fasting for what it has done for me personally (balanced my hormones, increased my energy levels, given me more time, to name a few things), and Gin Stephens is such a wonderful guide to this lifestyle. I love her overarching philosophy of "delay, don't deny" and find that this way of thinking overlaps naturally into other areas of my life. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is even mildly interested in the IF lifestyle (Just for kicks, I'll reiterate that IF is not a diet. It's a wonderfully liberating, sustainable health plan.) :)

Update: I just reread this. I wanted to reread this one for the New Year because I followed her plan for two weeks back when I read it for the first time and I was completely amazed at the results in just that short amount of time. So I wanted to try it again now that my work schedule is a little more normal. Now I will say, I didn't enjoy this one as much as I did the first time. But still 4 star worthy. So no change in stars.

*********************

This is Nonfiction/Health. I liked the author. She came across as 'no nonsense' when it came to the HOW of doing IF correctly and effectively. She was also very encouraging and personable.

I've read many books in this genre and I've always wondered why the health advice varies so much. And this author actually tackled that same thought. I liked the explanation of that little phenomena.

There are also many books about IF and they too all have varying advice when it comes to the HOW of it all. Again, I liked this author's encouragement to stay the course...her course...but to stay the course for maximum benefit. So all in all, 4 stars and I'd recommend this one to anyone wanting to give IF a try.

I wasn't expecting much, but have found a treasure of information. I've read so many diet books in my life, tried even more diets. I do like intermittent fasting, and have been doing it for many years, happily. I really like this author, she's a teacher, that studied diet books and medical studies, then put it together here. She quotes 2 of my favorite doctors that I trust in her studies. This author really put a lot into gathering all this. She presents it in a way that allows you to decide if this is what’s best for you, she acknowledges that we are all different, each body functions differently. She also backs that with various scientific reports. Forget the “diet” here and read this juts for the education alone, you will be amazed. I found myself shocked at one point when she explains how flavored drinks sugar free, calorie free really aren’t free, the body’s reaction shined a light on many symptoms I went through.

Fascinating.

I heard about intermittent fasting years ago, and I tried it, but I gave up quickly because I gained weight the first week. She explains why that might happen and offers a few better ways to measure if it’s having a positive impact.

I’m trying it (currently on day six), and I have already noticed a huge difference in my sleep (sleeping through the night daily for the first time in years!) and a decrease in my belly. I love that it is not a diet, because I have been on a lot of those, and they never work for very long. Here’s hoping this is the lifestyle I have been looking for.

The science seems legit, the writing is easy to understand, and she offers a lot of testimonials that are hopeful and motivating. Wish me luck!

Excellent read!

Having lost 30# and regained mental clarity and enthusiasm for life after reading Dr. Stephen’s first book, “Delay, Don’t Deny”, I was curious as to what she could add. The answer is, quite a lot! The format for this book is different, containing the most recent research and extensive references into intermittent fasting. Questions that come up repeatedly while fasting are addressed here, with solid, implementable answers. And all the while the author’s light-hearted humor propels the reader along, smiling. An excellent book, as well as an entertaining listen (I bought both audio and Kindle versions, and switched between these, which really enhances the information ). If you’re looking to explore this life-changing life-style, this is a must read!

I really loved reading her first book, and this one was no exception. I’ve spent nearly a year learning and tweaking the intermittent fasting lifestyle, and it’s been what I needed. I have a healthy BMI again after years of childbearing and weight gain, and really - a history of always being overweight. Slow, gradual but effective change in my health, my weight, my body composition, energy and relationship with food have all happened, and it’s just been a gradual sigh of relief. I still have goals and more to learn, but am getting closer to maintenance mode, and know what to do to keep moving forward. I inhaled this book. It helped me recognize where I still have work to do, but affirmed that fasting isn’t that daunting and it IS healthy. If you’re considering intermittent fasting, this is THE book to read.

I’ve read Delay, Don’t Deny by the same author, The Obesity Code and Intermittent Fasting, both by Jason Fung. There’s a lot of overlap between them. However, this book is the latest and so it’s most up to date and able to provide many recommendations from people who are successfully fasting. It gives good, specific instructions that should apply to the majority of people.

oh my goodness, there are WAYYYYY to many exclamation points in this book. Everywhere. It's annoying and exhausting.
And the "non-science-y" oversimplifications of things are irritating to me too.
Several chapters are HEAVILY padded by interminable testimonials from random people in Gin’s Facebook groups. I am not reading this book for random uneducated people’s comments. ☹️

I simply love this book. I have read about fasting a couple of times before, but because of Gin’s incredibly easy, conversational writing style, for the first time it has clicked for me that the body heals and repairs itself while resting from eating.

While fasting, damaged cells are metabolized, insulin production is lowered, metabolic rate increases, and ultimately inflammation can be decreased while energy and mental clarity are increased.

I have been fasting 16 hours a day with nothing consumed during the fast but water or black tea, for 28 days. In the 8 hours where I eat, I eat whatever I want until I’m satisfied. It’s been almost effortless. After being sick for a rather long period of time I’m optimistic about what fasting might do for me. Also, although I don’t weigh myself, all of my shirts have gotten loose.

3 stars. I’m new to the IF lifestyle and I am still not 100% convinced about it. This book wasn’t really a good starting point for me. I was looking for something more science based whereas this wasn’t. Which is fine I guess just not what I wanted. A lot of the information in this were things I could’ve just googled for myself but I did like the way it was written. It’s easily digestible and feels conversational. Overall, not what I was wanting but it was fine.

A strong sales pitch for the intermittent lifestyle, rooted in and supported by an impressive number of scientific studies, this book does particularly well at offering individual customization.

In this in-depth examination of the intermittent fasting lifestyle and how to make it work for you, Stephens is both a devoted convert and a rational teacher. She consistently offers disclaimers, especially encouraging the reader to look at the cited studies themselves and draw their own conclusions. This balance is important because the wealth of information and the enthusiasm with which it's presented could otherwise be overwhelming. Not a book to be binge-read, this is better suited to a long-term and/or cherry-picking read to get what you need in the moment, taking your time to delve deeper into the details.

Recommended for those interested in healthy lifestyles and the science of nutrition.

Gin Stephens is great cause she knows how to write a book. This is a second book of her’s that I have picked after Delay, don’t deny. This book like the first book simply propounds to adopt intermittent fasting as a lifestyle option due to the plethora of benefits that it affords such a appetite correction, streamlining of the metabolism, autophagy (cellular detoxification), weight loss, etc.

It’s a great book to understand the basics and the science behind fasting. Pick it up if you’re interested in learning more about how to fast (such as 16:8, 23:1, OMAD) and the benefits of fasting. The testimonials provided by the people also provide a good insight into the ways of fasting and the benefits that people have received upon inculcating this into their lifestyle.

I started off with a foundation on Intermittent Fasting and was hoping for expanding upon the knowledge with this book. I was mistaken. The author seems to enjoy her own voice, based on the obscene amount of quips and useless anecdotes that offer nothing to the content of this book. She also seems to write in a way that she assumes her audience has a 4th grade reading and comprehension level. Obviously I was disappointed… live and learn. Save a few bucks and spend 5mins on a Google search on the topic. You’ll get the same info. and save the annoyance.

I've been doing Delay Don't Deny for five weeks now and I like it and can see a bit of (slow) progress. This is Gin's newest book and is the same plan but with a lot more detail and organization in the info. I like this one best and if you're only going to read one of hers, let this one be the one.

An easy-to-understand guide to intermittent fasting. Gin Stephens is well-informed and relatable. I'm a huge fan of her podcast because of her humor and practical approach to health. She is always practical and realistic. Her outlook isn't extreme and is always backed by research. F.F.R. is her third book, but could easily be the first you read if you're interested in fasting.
