Cathy Pedrayes is the “Mom Friend” of social media, with millions of views on TikTok for her videos about personal safety and security. In this handy and fun guide, she offers tips on everything from personal safety and safety while traveling to cybersecurity and what to keep on hand to be prepared for every situation.
This isn’t my usual type of book, but I really appreciated the opportunity to read this gifted copy. I hadn’t heard of the Mom Friend before reading this one, but can definitely say that I am now a fan! The tips in this book were super useful and important to remember, and I appreciated the anecdotes that were interspersed from Cathy’s own experience.
I do think this is more a “reference manual” of sorts than the kind of thing you read cover to cover (which, to be fair, is implied by the name!) but I liked how the tips are broken down into categories and would be easy to reference based on the situation someone is facing in their life (e.g. reading the travel chapter before going abroad). I’d also love to see a comprehensive resource list (with, for example, trusted companies who offer some of the products or services discussed in the book) as, perhaps, an online companion feature, but appreciate that the book doesn’t devolve into a list of endorsements and product promotion, as well!
Bonus: the physical copy of the book is beautiful and sturdy, and it’s going to look great on my shelves! (Always a win.)

This isn’t a book that I’d typically want to read, but I’m super glad that I checked it out. Cathy Pedrayes nailed it with this book, and it’s fantastic for a variety of different demographics. Whether you’re a parent, single woman, or just someone who wants to be more prepared and safe, this book is phenomenal. In this book, Cathy gives a ton of different safety tips like how to be prepared in case of fires, what you can do to protect your privacy online and avoid scams, how to be safer when you travel and a ton more.
I have a lot of female friends who are concerned about walking alone, being stalked, or any of the other situations that women disproportionately have to worry about. This book provides so many useful tips that I’m honestly going to recommend it to all of my female friends. Personally, I’m someone who struggles with anxiety, so I get worried about everything, and the tips in this book provided me with practical tips that’ll help me feel more confident in different situation and less worried. So, I’m sure it can do that for many others who grab a copy of this book as well.
Cathy writes in a way that makes it easy to understand, and she provides a ton of stories and real-world situations so the reader understands why these tips are important. The sections are short, which makes it easy to reference when you need to, which makes it great to have around.

Not a book I would normally just pick up to read but I'm glad I did!
Lots of fantastic advice, tips, and information! Definitely a book I would have loved to have back when I had my daughter and even when I first got married! This book has so much great information and is one I can see myself gifting to others! Everything from home, travel and online safety and security to being prepared and aware and ready for many situations. Although I found a lot of the information to be what I already know and practice, I know there are others who would truly benefit from this helpful book.
The writing style also helped make this book quite enjoyable! Normally with books like this, I easily lose interest especially when it's information I already know. This book kept my interest throughout.

This is a helpful and amusing explanation on how to prepare for the most likely emergencies in life. It includes advice to avoid being kidnapped or robbed while traveling... or just coming home from the bar. Out of all of her traveling companions she was the only one who had brought along an emergency sewing kit when one man popped a button on his pants. He was saved from holding up his pants with one hand through the rest of the vacation. The author's advice includes how to secure one's home, what to do when a Nigerian prince askes for help in email, and how to avoid tracking on the internet. None of her advice is foolproof, but it is the baseline for cybersecurity and will solve the vast majority of one's concerns on the internet.
I will probably listen to this audiobook again. I need this advice.

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book was a GD delight. Pedrayes, who I'll admit I'd never heard of before, is someone who really thinks about safety and preparation and has aggregated a bunch of common sense home security, cyber security, and travel security tips. The tips were practical, the writing was engaging and it was structured in an way so as to make revisiting certain topics easy.
If I had one complaint it would be the research. Don't get me wrong, Pedrayes has researched the topics and does include sources throughout. I'm just a bit of a data nerd and would've loved more. That is entirely personal preference though and other readers might not mind at all.

Every person needs to read this book. Whether you're a man or a woman, travel a lot or haven't left your home town, an avid reader or someone who hasn't picked up a book in their life, you need to read this book. There's truly something for everyone here. Pedrayes makes personal safety easy with handy how-to guides and checklists. She tells it like it is and gets straight to the ever-so-important business of securing your home and self. And this isn't your grandma's home safety guide! This book comes with high-tech security tips and ways to clean your digital footprint as well as traditional safety tips to keep you safe wherever and whenever. Gift this book to everyone you know.

This is a super informative and detailed guide if you want safety tips for living on your own and travelling. This would make an ideal gift for a college-bound grad that you know, or for someone planning on living alone away from family and friends for the first time. If you feel a little clueless about things like travelling abroad, what to do in car/road emergencies, and how to avoid attracting people that want to scam/abduct you, this book is an excellent place to start.

Loved this book! I’m the mom friend of my friend groups too but Cathy included tips and information I didn’t know about and I can’t wait to incorporate into my own life! She’s also such a great person to follow on social media who videos help us stay safe and prepared while living our best lives!
