Editorial Reviews
Review
" Solvable is an evidence-based guide to making good decisions. In an uncertain world, the essence of good decision making is informed reflection. This book walks the reader through the process of reflection – thinking about how we think about decisions, what to pay attention to, and how to bring the necessary resources together in doing so. Step by step, it lays out evidence-based processes for scoping the decision (and the problem to be solved), gathering information, making the decision and acting on it. Full of examples showing the good, the bad, and the ugly in modern decision making, Solvable builds the decision maker's confidence and competence. I am singing its praises to my students and colleagues!' - Denise M. Rousseau H. J. Heinz II University Professor of Organizational Behavior and Public Policy, Director, Project on Evidence-based Organizational Practices, Heinz College and Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University
" Solvable is a valuable guide to making good decisions in situations of high complexity. Using many fascinating and entertaining examples, Arnaud and Albrecht offer useful guides for organising thought and triggering insight. Their metaphor of the Hero and Dragon is an artful way of describing the value of focusing on the crux of a challenge." - Richard Rumelt, Professor Emeritus, UCLA Anderson School of Management, and author of Good Strategy/Bad Strategy
"Strong problem-solving capabilities are essential, especially when you confront complex problems that have a profound and long-lasting impact on your organisations. Solvable provides a thorough-yet-accessible approach to help you elevate your complex problem-solving game." - Jørgen Vig Knudstorp, Executive Chairman Lego Brand Group

About the authors
Albrecht Enders is Professor of Strategy and Innovation at IMD. His major research, teaching and consulting interests are in the areas of managing discontinuous change and top team strategy development processes.
Professor Enders has worked for range of clients from different industries, including ABB, Agathon, Deloitte, Deutsche Bank, Siemens, Douglas Holding, Honda, ICBC, Novartis, MTR HongKong, Roland Berger, Safran, Skanska, Stora Enso, Telenor, Thyssen Krupp, TUI, Vodafone and VTT. In addition to running highly customized company-specific programs that focus on corporate transformation, he also directed the Advanced Strategic Management Program, one of IMD's core general management programs. Before coming to IMD, Professor Enders spent three years as a consultant with The Boston Consulting Group in the company's Cologne office where he worked on projects in the areas of financial services, energy and industrial goods. These projects focused on strategy development, reorganization and efficiency improvement.

He has also authored numerous case studies on companies such as Nestle, Tesco.com, Nordea, XING and SonyBMG, as well as written a strategy textbook, "Strategies for e-business" (FT Prentice Hall). His research and case writing efforts have been recognized by awards from the BPS division of the Academy of Management, the EFMD, ECCH and SIM.
Albrecht Enders holds a PhD in strategic management from the Leipzig Graduate School of Management in Germany and a BA in economics from Dartmouth College in the USA.
Arnaud Chevallier helps executives solve complex problems and make better decisions under uncertainty. His research, teaching and consulting draw on empirical findings from diverse disciplines to provide concrete tools that prepare executives to manage the strategic challenges they face in today’s dynamic global marketplace.
Effective problem solvers are T-shaped – they are both generalists and specialists, combining depth and breadth of knowledge. Although traditional education and training cultivate specialist skills, they pay much less attention to the acquisition of generalist skills, including strategic thinking. Executives can use Chevallier’s tools to improve on the breadth dimension.
His initial 2016 book Strategic Thinking in Complex Problem Solving, published by Oxford University Press, is now followed by his latest title, Solvable: A Simple Solution to Complex Problems, co-authored with Albrecht Enders. This book synthesizes the strategic thinking needed for complex problem solving into a simple three-step process: frame, explore, decide. It also shows practitioners how to follow these steps using highly applicable, concrete tools.
He has helped numerous organizations to identify breakthrough solutions to complex problems, including Shell, SAP, Lenovo, Cisco, Novo Nordisk, Statkraft, and the United Nations. He recently helped the International Committee of the Red Cross identify innovative funding sources and assisted Gavi the Vaccine Alliance in its drive to have greater impact. He also helped Swiss company Agathon to make decisions under high uncertainty during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, and supported Tetra Pak in improving its decision-making processes through the optimal engagement of stakeholders.
At IMD he is Director of the Global Management Foundations (GMF) program and the Master of Science in Sustainable Management and Technology (SMT) program offered jointly by IMD, the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), and the University of Lausanne. He is also Co-Director of IMD’s Complex Problem Solving (CPS) program.
Before joining IMD in 2018, Chevallier served as Associate Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at Rice University in Houston, Texas, where he taught strategic thinking in the engineering school. He was previously graduate dean of the University of Monterrey in Mexico, teaching engineering and business. He trained in mechanical engineering and his PhD from Rice focused on nonlinear stochastic mechanics. He then worked in Accenture’s strategy and business architecture division before joining academia.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe chapters Chevallier and Enders put together flow well through a process of problem solving using a very relatable knight's quest analogy. Along they way the discuss and give great examples of methods to "slay" barriers to solving complex problems (and perhaps even turning a barrier into a tool to help solve the problem). I particularly found the first section on framing most helpful as I cannot count the number of time I witnessed people wasting time trying to solve the wrong problem. I have not tried the online tools they make available to readers yet, but I plan to in the near future.
Solvable left me wanting to improve my problem solving skills and to delve further into the references and additional resources in the well documented book. I highly recommend Solvable if you're wanting to improve problem solving skills in general or are dealing with complex problems now and want a fresh process and perspective on completing your quests.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2022Format: PaperbackI was given this book as a gift, and I just bought another copy to give as a gift. I work in a Private Equity firm and face complex problems often. This book gives you the information and the tools to face a problem and walk yourself to the solution or solutions by using a three step process that takes the emotions out and forces you to focus on a process. This is exactly what I am using in my work. I believe this is an invaluable tool that anyone would benefit from.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great approach to problem solving
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIt’s the best problem-solving book I’ve used for three reasons:
· It sets up a narrative or story as a pathway to framing the fundamental question(s).
· The authors have extensive experience in problem-solving, so it balances providing a good structure with practicality.
· Numerous studies, not just assertions, back their approach.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant and Innovative Book!
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI was lucky enough to hear one of the authors being interviewed on the radio. His description of the book captured my curiosity. When I received my copy I was not disappointed. Solvable should be read by everyone who is regularly faced with complex problems . The problem solving process described in the book, FrED (Frame, Explore, Decide) is so clear and simple that it is hard to believe it can be so effective. As a therapist I was particularly interested in learning how to help people frame their problem more effectively. The framing process worked brilliantly in this context. This was a lovely surprise to me as I did not anticipate that the ideas would translate so well. If you are looking for some new, innovative and really practical ideas to help you solve your complex problems this book should be top of your reading list. Highly, highly recommended.
