Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 4,672 ratings

Advance praise for Untangled

“For years people have been asking me for the ‘girl equivalent of
Raising Cain,’ and I haven't known exactly what to recommend. Now I do.”—Michael Thompson, Ph.D., author of Raising Cain

“An essential guide to understanding and supporting girls throughout their development. It’s obvious that Dr. Damour ‘gets’ girls and is one of the few experts in the field who works with them day in and day out. She clearly understands the best way for any adult to help them navigate the common yet difficult challenges so many girls face.”
—Rosalind Wiseman, author of Queen Bees & Wannabes

Untangled is a gem. Lisa Damour deftly blends insights from her clinical experience working with girls, time-honored wisdom on adolescence, the latest social science and neuroscience research, and frank descriptions of cultural trends and media messages. From the moment I read the last page I’ve been recommending it to my clients (including those with sons!) and colleagues, and using it as a refreshing guide in my own work with teenagers and their parents.”—Wendy Mogel, Ph.D., author of The Blessing of a Skinned Knee

“An arsenal of strategies to respond to your daughter’s ever-changing brain, feelings, and choices,
Untangled will become your dog-eared travel guide to the mysterious world of teenage girls.”—Rachel Simmons, author of Odd Girl Out

“So chock-full of practical wisdom that I read it straight through twice, then recommended it to every person I know who has a daughter. This book will, no question, make you a better—and a saner—parent of your adolescent girl.”
—Peggy Orenstein, author of Girls and Sex

“There are books about teenagers that are smart. And there are books about teenagers that are practical. Lisa Damour, thankfully, provides us with one that is both. With palpable empathy and understanding for adolescent girls and their families, Damour equips parents with a flexible blueprint for anticipating challenges and encouraging growth in their daughters. If you have a daughter (or were a daughter!),
Untangled is mandatory reading.”—Madeline Levine, Ph.D., author of The Price of Privilege

“This is the book parents have been waiting, hoping, and praying for, because it’s far more than a book. It’s a map, flashlight, and GPS device for navigating the landscape of adolescent girlhood. Dr. Lisa Damour proves to be the perfect guide and companion: wise, whip-smart, and relentlessly practical on every page. As the father of three teenage girls, I wish I’d had this book years ago—and I hope that it is read by every parent, teacher, coach, administrator, and human being who wants to help girls grow and thrive in today’s world.”
—Daniel Coyle, author of The Talent Code

“In exceptionally clear prose, Lisa Damour—a clinical psychologist—skillfully blends research analysis, psychological insight, and stories of girls and their families into a compelling narrative about what’s right about our daughters. She illuminates the seven transitions that girls must untangle to become fully themselves, with each offering a corresponding opportunity for parents to stretch and transform themselves. Throughout, Damour offers unstintingly practical advice to parents about how to talk with their daughters about what matters most and in ways that they are likely to be heard.”
—Kimberlyn Leary, Ph.D., associate professor, Harvard Medical School

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Finally, there’s some good news for puzzled parents of adolescent girls, and psychologist Lisa Damour is the bearer of that happy news. [Untangled] is the most down-to-earth, readable parenting book I’ve come across in a long time.”The Washington Post

“Anna Freud wrote in 1958, ‘There are few situations in life which are more difficult to cope with than an adolescent son or daughter during the attempt to liberate themselves.’ In the intervening decades, the transition doesn’t appear to have gotten any easier which makes
Untangled such a welcome new resource.”The Boston Globe

“Damour offers a hopeful, helpful new way for parents to talk about—and with—teenage girls. . . . Parents will want this book on their shelves, next to established classics of the genre.”
Publishers Weekly

The book has really been a great insight for not only teenage girls, also boys.
I would highly recommend this book for any parent. I’m a father of a boy and girl. Yes, the book is directed more towards teenage girls, and I can really apply it to all different ages of children (girl or boy) into adulthood. My only issue with the book is that some of the pages are not in numerical order. There are two locations that are not correct in the book.Location 1) The next page after 16 is page 29.Location 2) The next page after 312 is 17Pages 17 through 28 are skipped in Chapter one, and placed at the back of the book in Index between pages 312 & 313. I did not even recognize this until flipping through the back of the book after I though I had finished the book. First time ever encountering this in a book. Not sure how many other books were shipped out like this.

My girls are only in 3rd and 2nd grade but I will be reading this many times before adolescence! SO readable and lots of applicable tips on how to remain in relationship with your daughters during what can feel like tumultuous times. It really helps you view your girls through the lens of their humanity and what they’re learning that is triggering them to act certain ways. I’ve recommended this to several friends!

Before becoming a mom I was a nanny. So when I got pregnant I felt pretty well prepared for infancy and toddlerhood. But now that my daughter is 12, I'm finding myself reading all of the parenting books I can. I had a tumultuous relationship with my parents as a teen and really wanted to get a better grip on teenagers before I had a house full of them. I still remember the feeling that my parents didn't understand me or what it was like to be a teenager in the early 00s, not the 80s. This book gave a lot of perspective and aligned well with my parenting values. My daughter isn't mine to own - she's mine to lead and guide, but is her own person in her own right. I found myself reading this book in one sitting. I appreciate the insight into teens and social media, I know the impact it has had on me as an adult so it's easy to imagine the difficulty it presents to teens. Overall, I highly recommend this book for parents of teens! The future lies with our girls, we have a responsibility to lead them to greatness.

This was easily the most helpful "parenting" book I've read in the last decade. My girls are 11 & 9 and I'm already exhausted by their teenage years. The knowledge and tools and advice in this book did a great job of encouraging me while not disregarding my trepidation of this next stage ofbour lives.

I really loved this book and I will continue to refer back to it as-needed. I bought this book because my 13 year-old seemed to be snarky and moody (whereas before she was always lighthearted and playful). I wanted to find a book that would help me understand what she was going through and how, as a parent, I could help her transition to adulthood with the least amount of trauma (for both of us!) My childhood and teen years were abusive and traumatic, so I had little information on how to help my daughter through these years. I just knew I didn't want to make the same mistakes my parents did, but I also didn't know what the right approach was either.

This book helped me tremendously. Not only do I understand why my daughter does the things she does, but it clearly lays out what steps I should be taking as a parent to help her understand what she's going through, and how to provide the best kind of feedback and support.

I breaks down things very clearly and is an easy read. It explains the science and behavioral reasons of why teens do what they do and what we, as parents, can do to help them through this stage of life.

I would recommend this book to all parents, not just people with teen girls. The advice in the book can apply to both boys and girls (although it was written to explain teen girls) and I think it would be helpful for parents of boys as well. I think that if parents of boys read this, it will help them with their sons as well, but it will also help their sons understand where their female peers are coming from. Win-win situation for everyone involved--parents, teen girls, teen boys, and teen boys trying to understand their female peers.

This is an excellent book for parents of pre-teen and teen girls. I found Chapter 5 to be the most helpful at this stage which is 12 years old and 6th grade. Spot on. I would highly recommend this book to parents of pre-teens and teens.

This book has helped me tremendously in understanding what my teenage daughter is goign through and experiencing. I bought 6 more copies to give out to friends that are parents of teenage girls. Not only does it help your daughter but it helps you be prepared in how to deal with situations and know when you are more in the right or wrong in parenting choices. Also love the "when to worry" section. This book is a must read, and I refer to it often. My partner and I discuss it all time - "oh, remember in the book when she said xyz...". If you're on the fence about buying this book, do it.
