Rate this book
An essential guide for teaching and learning computational art and exercises, assignments, interviews, and more than 170 illustrations of creative work.

This book is an essential resource for art educators and practitioners who want to explore code as a creative medium, and serves as a guide for computer scientists transitioning from STEM to STEAM in their syllabi or practice. It provides a collection of classic creative coding prompts and assignments, accompanied by annotated examples of both classic and contemporary projects, and more than 170 illustrations of creative work, and features a set of interviews with leading educators. Picking up where standard programming guides leave off, the authors highlight alternative programming pedagogies suitable for the art- and design-oriented classroom, including teaching approaches, resources, and community support structures.

Useful pedagogical text for teaching art-minded computational skills. Not really what I read it for - really I wanted a nice little resource of past works to look through, and this came stacked with examples of works that fit into their various project parameters. So, yeah. Cool. Nice. Served my purpose just fine.

A book I'm very grateful to have read in preparation for teaching creative coding. Loved how the chapter on projects included existing relevant artwork and context to why they are meaningful and the chapter with interviews with different educators was also very insightful

I was looking for a good introduction to the processes of generative art, not a tutorial of some programming language or library. This book perfectly fits the bill! Filled to the brim with ideas and assignments it is the ideal reference to get started. The second part briefly outlines the types of methods one can use as building blocks for generative art while the final parts give some advice about teaching computational art and design.

Excellent book with many, many examples! The second half also delves into a teaching approach to using code for art. The only thing I wouldn’t liked to see more of is more pictures of sample artworks. Many were tucked away in each chapter’s “see other projects,” but would’ve been nice to have some of those pieces have the visual space they deserve.

A hidden gem on teaching and learning creative coding written by experienced educators with respectable depths of knowledge in the subject matter and contextual considerations as well as curriculum design.

An amazing survey of the field - broad, not narrow, and all encompassing. Simply incredible.
