Raymond Dalio (born August 8, 1949) is an American investor, hedge fund manager, and philanthropist. Dalio is the founder of investment firm Bridgewater Associates, one of the world's largest hedge funds.
Spontaneous and inspiring Sunday morning read. A beautiful artsy and very easy-to-read book to have on your shelf.
Reading words and wisdom from people who already have long life (and business) experience always makes one want to “believe” more of what they are saying. So in that way Ray’s book had a lot more value for me.
Ray’s principles for success could be summed up as follows: - open-minded approach and determination will always (!) get you further - reflecting on your mistakes, weaknesses, problems and pains always ends with progress - what you want is always up to you, but prioritize well and make clear decisions on what’s next - decide what to do => have the courage to do it - the quality of your decision making will determine the quality of your life - meaningful work = do what you love - meaningful relationships = people you love - do what you love and are passionate about with the people you love and want to be with - don’t let your ego and blind spot barriers stand in your way - be radically truthful and transparent - never say anything about someone you wouldn’t say to them directly - everything in the world is a “machine” and all of these machines evolve together to produce the realities we encounter every day
And his general 5-step process on being successful: 1) know your goals 2) identify your problems 3) diagnose and understand your problems, get to the root 4) design a plan to get around them 5) do it, implement your plan!
“There is nothing better than to be on a shared mission with people you care about who can be radically truthful and radically transparent with each other.” - Definitely adding this one to my favourite quotes. Inspiring words and compelling illustrations!
It's a 5 star read. I love that it's distilled the essentials of the larger tome. I hope to read this to my kids and I really hope they grasp it's essentials.
Dalio says this book is written to his grandchildren and others who find it useful. I enjoyed this distillation of the longer version (which I started to read a year or so ago and only skimmed it) and find it very useful. It is suited to my limited attention span. I recommend it to my own grandchildren as well, to be read in their early teen years. These are important principles. (For those faithful believers who cringe at the secular concepts of the big bang or evolution, I suggest thinking "creation" and "progress" when you see those words. It will be okay and you'll get through it. I did!)
I’ve been meaning to read Principles for a while but couldn’t commit to the length for what seemed generally straightforward advice. So I read this children’s book version instead.
As a children’s book, it’s fine. The illustrations were repetitive and basic and the length (over 100 pages) was way longer than most children would put up with.
That said, the principles are sound and I’ve found the same lessons in my own life. As a guide to living, I cannot disagree. But it was a little rich (lol) to consider a billionaire hedge fund manager saying pretty much anyone can accomplish what they set their mind to following these principles. Yes, following these will likely get you further than not following them. But some people start with the wind in their sails and some people are going against a current. I can’t say I’m surprised by this but it does sour me to the overall message, which is a good one.
One of the best books I've read. It summarized what Ray Dalio wrote in Principles. However this version is much easier to understand. Strongly recommended.
Enjoyable read with thought provoking questions and nice artwork. I especially recommend it if you are in an introspective mood. It's a small book worth of revisiting from time to time.
Had some really interesting material at the end which made you look seriously at where you are in the stage of life. And what you might want to think about doing.
• The most important things you need in life are good principles • Principles are ways of successfully dealing with realities that you will encounter ; they are recipes for success • Principle #1 – think for yourself while being radically open-minded • Dreams + Reality + Determination = a successful life • Pain + Reflection = Progress
• 5-step process for being successful:
o Step 1 – GOALS – know your goals and run after them ; set goals based on your passion, strengths and weaknesses You will have to find these goals by trial and error/ reflection etc o Step 2 – PROBLEMS o STEP 3 – DIAGNOSIS o STEP 4 – DESIGN – Design a plan that will get you around the problem o STEP 5 – EXECUTE
• EGO BARRIERS and BLINDSPOTS o Ego prevents us from recognizing our weakness o BLIND SPOT exists because people see things differently ; no one can see all the Threats and opportunities. Thus, if you can look at things with the help of others ; you will notice more o Look for people who THOUGHTFULLY DISAGREE with you
• Meaningful work and Meaningful relationships are the greatest assets and rewards • Create a culture in which it’s ok to make mistakes and unacceptable not to learn from them
A good narrative illustration of some of the core principles Ray suggests to live by, which are by their most distilled form. Looking forward to read his book Principles next.
It’s a great illustrated book available on YouTube. It is helpful to understand more about these principles, and I would listen to this audiobook again. 👍
A must read that provides a framework for a solid foundation for success from the very successful Ray Dalio. Do not miss to watch the Youtube video provided as a link at the end of the book. What next - Just apply the principles learnt and create your own principles from your experiences.
Below is my notes..
- Think for yourself while being radically open-minded - Knowing what is true is essential for making good decisions - Dreams + Embracing reality + Determination = A Successful life - Keep focused on achieving your dreams, take responsibility for understanding the realities that affect you and how to deal with them well and do that with determination - Pain + Reflection = Progress - Five step process for being successful Goals - Know your goals and run after them. While you can have most anything you want, you can’t have everything you want, so decide your priorities Problems - Identify the problems that stand in the way of you to achieve your goals. To evolve you need to identify them and not tolerate them Diagnosis – Diagnose these problems to get the root causes. Consider the possibility of weaknesses of yours or others Design – Design plans to get around the problem that is standing in the way of your progress Do it - Execute the designs - Not everyone can do all the five steps well. But you can get help from others who can see and do things you can’t - Let go of your attachment to have the right answers yourself and become open minded. This radically open minded approach significantly broomsticks decision-making. - Success is not just a matter of achieving one goals, The struggle to get them with people that we care about gives us the personal revolution and the meaningful relationships that are the real rewards - With time the success of the mission and the well-being of other people become more important than our own success - Evolve and pick your own principles to suit your own needs, write them down and have them evolve with you - Meaningful work and meaningful relationships are the greatest assets and the greatest rewards - It’s okay to make mistakes but its unacceptable not to learn from them - Be open minded and assertive at the same time - Evolution is simply a process of either adapting or die dying - We ourselves are and we are dealing with machines that evolve together to produce reality. While this might sound philosophical in practice putting things in perspective helps a great deal with realities in a better way - Risk and reward naturally go together - Ego is a big barrier that prevents us from acknowledging our weaknesses - Replace the joy of being right with the joy of learning what is true
Would like to get started with the big book to follow up these learnings.
This looks like a childrens book, but was such a great read. It was short (1 hour read), insightful, and easily digestible. I will add this to my favorites. The book focuses on life and how we are all a part of a larger "machine". A memorable and impactful thought was around how we focus on our goals, but the things we strive for are actually just the bait and the ultimate goal should be to enjoy life with the people that make life worth living. I plan to add this book to my giftable books and definitely added a copy to my library.
I'm not sure why I was gifted this picture book, which essentially features the same three pictures: Man tripping over rock, man looking at mountain peak, and man lost in jungle.
Might be nice for a high school student? It's folksy wisdom that you would get from a man relaxing in a rocking chair in a small Western town town, munching on a Red Delicious apple. Only here, the man is a billionaire hedge fund manager.
I loved Ray Dalio’s lengthier Bible for personal and business success, but it takes some serious commitment of time to read and reflect on it. In this new version, Dalio distills his wisdom into an illustrated children’s book format that is a perfect gift for any teen or adult. The exercises in the back of the book are particularly useful to reflect on one’s journey, goals and realities.
A really short, colourfully-illustrated book that summarises Ray Dalio’s principles for success. Written simply and easy to understand, this is a cute and wise book suitable for all ages.
The principles are good and I like the quick read to force some reflection on your own principles and approach to life. The illustrations weren’t very dynamic nor interesting to me. I think a different illustrator could have made this more engaging.
