Rules for Reformers Paperback – November 30, 2021

Additional Details
In Rules for Reformers, Douglas Wilson poaches the political craft of radical progressives and applies it to Christian efforts in the current culture war. The result is a spicy blend of combat manual and cultural manifesto. Rules for Reformers is a little bit proclamation of grace, a little bit Art of War, and a little bit analysis of past embarrassments and current cowardice, all mixed together with a bunch of advanced knife-fighting techniques. As motivating as it is provocative, Rules for Reformers is just plain good to read. Thanks to Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals: A Practical Primer for Realistic Radicals -- a book well-beloved by Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and many others -- for much of the shrewd advice, and for none of the worldview.
This book is published by Canon Press. At Canon Press, we’re gospel outfitters: no matter who you are or what you do, you’re called to be increasing in Biblical faithfulness. That’s because Jesus’s death and resurrection changed everything: All of Christ, for all of life, for all the world.
As the wisest man said, “Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God has already accepted your works” (Eccl. 9:7).
We believe reformation and revival start from faith in the Lord with joyful obedience to the Bible, and that is what makes everyday tasks significant and transforms culture. Because of these beliefs, we offer books on Christian living, encouragement, contentment, raising kids, healthy marriages, educational choices, classical education, homeschooling, politics, government, feminism, identity, manhood, womanhood, singleness, virtue, and so much more.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"I much prefer Wilson's sincerity to the vague and Python-esque witterings of the interfaith and ecumenical groups who barely respect their own traditions. He is willing to maintain very staunchly that Jesus of Nazareth was the Christ and that his sacrifice redeems our state of sin."
~Christopher Hitchens
"More like a lumberjack than a pastor, even when he wears a suit."The New York Times
"Doug Wilson jumped the shark a long time ago."~Jonathan Merritt
"So just who is this twisted Doug Wilson creature, anyway?"~The Slacktivist
"Quintessential Douglas Wilson... very good, very smart, and full of trademark winsome snark. God's people are better off for it. His enemies -- not so much."~Steve Deace, Nationally syndicated radio host
"Profoundly insightful and biblically faithful. Wilson has given us a manifesto for grace-driven cultural reformation." --~Joe Rigney, author of The Things of Earth and assistant professor of Theology and Christian Worldview at Bethlehem College and Seminary

I love that he summarily rejected and rebuked the idea of being a, "nice", Christian but made it quite clear of the sheer laziness of that approach, especially since much of it is an attempt at social approval or fear of being what he, "cool shaming" but we Christians must remember that anything or anyone that is not with Christ, is against Him.
He challenged Christian to develop a robust sense of humor, to not be offendable.
The Rules for Reformers are as follows:
1) Jesus is the same, yesterday, today and forever.
2) Always remember the distinction between principles and methods.
3) Reformers are conservatives, which means they must be prefer the concrete to the abstract.
4) Reformers must cultivate a high sense of humor.
5) Reformers must be combative.
6) Reformers must play the long game.
7) Reformers must be remember always that religion shapes culture, and culture trumps politics.
I would encourage everyone to look up Douglas Wilson, he offers a different perspective on many of the issues of our day than the dichotomy that mainstream culture would like us to believe that there is.
The fact is, the Christian needs to remember that we transform or reform the world by renewing our minds, we do this, by bringing every thought captive and to the obedience of Christ, because Christ is our hope and we must be able to give the reasons why He is our hope, thus be apologetist for Christ, the cross, Him crucified and risen again and that the only way to salvation is through Him and belief in His blood to justify us before God, and God's grace giving us faith to believe in Him, through His Word that is our sword to contend for our faith, the Spirit for our sanctification and for, by, and of the glory of God and it is not work of men but solely the work if God.
In a world of radicals, we Christians must be Reformers and transformers of this world, not conforming to the world, but conforming to the image of God and Christ Jesus.

Of course, since DW is indeed a postmillenialist, with a theonomic bent, who baptized babies and feeds them communion, and he can be a bit snarky, there a good chance many average Christians who don’t share those conviction will find something to disagree with, but those will only be tangential points. If you believe we ought to be culturally engaged and that is it is good and right to actually expect that we can be successful, we can actually bring some kind of reformation, this book will strike a chord in your heart (one that will probably lead you to sing Psalms very loudly in public on purpose) and will be an immensely practical guide book.
Listen let’s be honest, the radicals, the Alinsky’s of the world, the baby-murderers, the feminists, the leftists, the trans-ers, the social justice warriors, the big brothers, the inner parties, they are playing to win. They are plying to destroy, and they have a plan. They recognize that they are in a war and they have a strategy, it’s time we start with one too. If we’re going to fight back at all that is. And we need something more concrete and practical that merely “preach the gospel,” we need questions that answer when, where, how, why, to whom do we preach the gospel? How often? With what degree of boldness? Do we retreat? Should we do it in public? On the steps of congress? How do we do what we know we are supposed to do?
So do you want to do something? Do you want to be a working part of a cultural reformation? Do you need more than just live your Christian witness in your job as a gameplan? Do you need real on the ground precocial guidance? READ THIS BOOK. It won’t be perfect for every theological inclination out there, but for almost all of us (those escapist dispy out there excluded) it will be at least one step in the right direction.
RFR is chock-full of mid-western vernacular but none the worse for that. The author speaks theological truth in a robust way, without equivocation. He is not politically correct, a condition which western secularism has driven the church into.
Ignore the smattering of typos. Focus instead upon the vision that Doug Wilson paints of a vibrant, wholehearted Christianity that seeks to transform our rotting culture from the inside out.
Worth reading at least twice! With a notebook at your side.
If the western church is to be reformed, this is the way to do it.
