Rising Together: How We Can Bridge Divides and Create a More Inclusive Workplace

Rate this book
In this follow-up to her international bestseller How Women Rise, Sally Helgesen draws on three decades of work with executives and aspiring leaders around the world to offer practical ways to build more inclusive relationships, teams, and workplaces.

Participants at leadership conferences often tell Sally, “Please don’t spend your time telling us why developing and retaining a diverse workforce is important. We get it. The problem is, we don’t know how to do it.” Rising Together provides that missing how in full detail by identifying both what holds us back and specific tactics that can help us move forward.

First, Sally identifies the eight common triggers most likely to undermine our ability to collaborate across divides—not only of gender, but also of age, ethnicity, race, sexuality, and life experience. These triggers are widespread, yet rarely acknowledged. They include differences in how people from different backgrounds view ambition, competence, perceptions, fairness, communication, networks, attraction, and humor.

Sally then offers specific practices designed to address these triggers: simple behavioral tweaks that we can use on a daily basis; a method for informally enlisting allies to hold us to account; and a means for cultivating and disseminating the dynamic power of we.

Rising Together is for readers at every stage and level in their careers who recognize that building a broad range of relationships is essential to their advancement, now and in the future. This book also serves as an indispensable guide for HR, diversity, and leadership professionals tasked with addressing the misunderstandings, resentments, and derailments caused by the eight triggers. Sally’s focus on behaviors—how we act—rather than bias—how we think—promises to redirect the inclusion conversation in a grounded, real-world way that brings us together.

Ummm. Complicated feelings about this book. Got a couple of ideas. Also significant chunks of it are so basic it’s disturbing

With the release of her new book “Rising Together,” Sally proves to be the real deal in having become the richly deserved guru in helping men and women come together as one voice versus disparate voices.
Her book is not just a reminder it is a call to action to have the COURAGE now to do what we need to do as individuals, in our teams, and in the workplace – to build a culture of one while celebrating our differences. Sally teaches us how to do this by focusing on commonalities, behavior, tactics, and good intentions.

Some say start with WHY? But in Rising Together, Sally Helgesen starts with HOW! Many people understand the need to be inclusive, but it is not always clear how to be more inclusive. The very title of the book says it all. When we work TOGETHER, we all can RISE. The book provides real-life interviews of people who have succeeded in being more inclusive in various ways. Many people will be inspired to create "cultures of inclusion" after reading this excellent book by Sally Helgesen.

As a school leader, I often became frustrated by moves I thought I was making that would unite teams and people. This book helped me take a step back and look at culture, environment, timing, approach, and follow up. It's not the usual "involve all voices" or "listen more than you talk." I didn't read from start to finish, but read selected chapters/pages and then went back to read from beginning to end. Wise words that I'll go back to again and again.

RISING TOGETHER presents some common workplace triggers that hinder inclusion and collaboration and offers practical examples of how to overcome these obstacles to create and keep a diverse workforce.

I liked the premise of RISING TOGETHER. There’s a lot of useful information and things to think about. The book is presented in a logical format. I wasn’t keen on some of the dialogue examples though. They felt overly scripted and unnatural. Aside from these few areas, I felt that the book was a beneficial read and will likely reference it in the future.

RISING TOGETHER was a useful read and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for information on how to practice and promote collaboration, inclusivity, and diversity in the workplace.

After reading and listening multiple times to How Women Rise, I understand the necessity to foster inclusivity, however, Rising Together, doesn't quite deliver the punch of its prequel.
