- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2015Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI took the Conquer Your Critical Inner Voice eCourse that was offered by one of the authors of this book, Lisa Firestone, and it really helped me understand myself in a way I never had before. It also helped me change my behavior for the better in a way I never had before. I think this book alone, without the eCourse, would have helped me do those things too.
I ordered this book because I thought it would give me a guide at my fingertips to keep making personal progress. And it has. I like having the information broken up into chapters that I can flip to when I want to go over that aspect of the critical inner voice and when I want to use a workbook section to progress as well. There was one concept in the book that I didn't think made a lot of sense for me, but I kept an open mind and used the other ideas and concepts that were helpful for me.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand themselves better and make real progress within themselves and in improving their effectiveness and success in life.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2018Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI used this product to help myself fight an evil entity in my mind. This book along with therapy and anger management has to give me hope and a new lease on life. This book is what I need, and if the critical voice comes back, I will fight it head-on. I wish I had this book four years ago. I will be holding on to this book and reading over the work and do all of the exercises once a month, that way I know where I am against the critical inner voice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book to generally understand how our self-criticising can cause us problems
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe gist of this technique is to recognize the thoughts you have about yourself that are critical and take actions that contradict the beliefs that those thoughts are proposing. Dr. Firestone is a psychodynamic therapist by training but the technique can be used in Cognitive Behavior Therapy as well. Recognize your critical thoughts, give them a voice as if it was someone else telling you those things, argue against the criticism coming from that voice, and take actions to disprove the beliefs suggested by the critical voice. That's how it works.
The book then goes on to describe how to use this technique in many different areas of life, I suggest looking at the table of contents for that. I particularly like the relationships chapter which describes Dr. Firestone's "Fantasy Bond" theory of how we develop an imaginary bond with our primary caregiver at an early age as a coping mechanism which persists, although subconsciously, into adulthood. This coping mechanism interferes with romantic relationships because our view of being independant or dependant on the fantasy does not always measure up to the reality of a relationship. The solution appears to be similar to other solutions in the book which is to become aware of the things we say to ourselves as well as the judgements we bring to the relationship. The book recommends actions that would help to make the relationship more realistic and open in communication between partners. Honestly an entire book could be written on this subject alone and I wish I could find a book that would explore the concept much further. Other than this chapter I wasn't as intrigued by the concepts presented.
I would recommend this book even if it does not delve deeply into each of the topics presented in each chapter. It would be best to find a therapist that could help you through the exercises and there is also a chapter on that to help you find a good therapist.
The reason I couldn't give this 5 stars is that there is a lack of depth in explaining how to judge critical thoughts and how to make more realistic thoughts to take their place. Most of the exercises given tell you to write a more realistic point of view to contrast with the critical thoughts you have about yourself. But it doesn't explain how to create a realistic view. The problem is we grow up with a particular point of view and don't really know what a more realistic view would sound like. This book would have been better if it focused on how to do that.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2015Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe only thing we have to fear...
This book helped me to Listen to what I was thinking. To work on changing the context of the very thoughts. So many go through with fear; the fear of not being good enough for someone or something. For example the fear of public speaking, you might tell yourself something along the lines of "They will see me as a total looser". This book will help you silence that voice, and help you to learn how to encourage yourself.
I highly recommend this book!

- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI've read the previous books by Dr. Firestone and listened to the audiobook (meh. Not helpful). I personally find this approach most effective. All the previous methods I've seen like saying positive things or the CBT approaches were half measures.
This gets down to the planets surface where I live and contend with evil prison guard satellites. That is, tormenting critical voice entities. I agree with the original author of this theory that we all (more or less) are driven by these critical voices but for most of us, and me still some of the time they're cloaked- camouflaged- lurking behind the brush. But still whispering their slanderous lies. And we live in a kind of hypnosis. For you Underdog fans. "I will do what simon says..". This theory is so incredibly under appreciated and widely relevant. Dr Freud should hope to sit on the higher clouds with Dr Firestone and Dr Alice Miller. Why do you often feel anxious or depressed or suddenly tired? It may be this voice entity that's whispering slanderous lies about you- to you. The best news? It's not you saying these things. The critical inner voice is accurately described as a semi autonomous entity that is NOT you.
