After earning bachelor and master's degrees at Cornell, Sagan earned a double doctorate at the University of Chicago in 1960. He became professor of astronomy and space science and director of the Laboratory for Planetary Studies at Cornell University, and co-founder of the Planetary Society. A great popularizer of science, Sagan produced the PBS series, "Cosmos," which was Emmy and Peabody award-winning, and was watched by 500 million people in 60 countries. A book of the same title came out in 1980, and was on The New York Times bestseller list for 7 weeks. Sagan was author, co-author or editor of 20 books, including The Dragons of Eden (1977), which won a Pulitzer, Pale Blue Dot (1995) and The Demon-Haunted World: Science As a Candle in the Dark (1996), his hardest-hitting on religion. With his wife, Ann Druyan, he was co-producer of the popular motion picture, "Contact," which featured a feminist, atheist protagonist played by Jodie Foster (1997). The film came out after Sagan's death, following a 2-year struggle with a bone marrow disease. Sagan played a leading role in NASA's Mariner, Viking, Voyager, and Galileo expeditions to other planets. Ann Druyan, in the epilogue to Sagan's last book, Billions and Billions: Thoughts on Life and Death at the Brink of the Millennium (published posthumously in 1997), gives a moving account of Carl's last days: "Contrary to the fantasies of the fundamentalists, there was no deathbed conversion, no last minute refuge taken in a comforting vision of a heaven or an afterlife. For Carl, what mattered most was what was true, not merely what would make us feel better. Even at this moment when anyone would be forgiven for turning away from the reality of our situation, Carl was unflinching. As we looked deeply into each other's eyes, it was with a shared conviction that our wondrous life together was ending forever."
For his work, Dr. Sagan received the NASA medals for Exceptional Scientific Achievement and (twice) for Distinguished Public Service, as well as the NASA Apollo Achievement Award. Asteroid 2709 Sagan is named after him. He was also awarded the John F. Kennedy Astronautics Award of the American Astronautical Society, the Explorers Club 75th Anniversary Award, the Konstantin Tsiolkovsky Medal of the Soviet Cosmonauts Federation, and the Masursky Award of the American Astronomical Society, ("for his extraordinary contributions to the development of planetary science…As a scientist trained in both astronomy and biology, Dr. Sagan has made seminal contributions to the study of planetary atmospheres, planetary surfaces, the history of the Earth, and exobiology. Many of the most productive planetary scientists working today are his present and former students and associates").
He was also a recipient of the Public Welfare Medal, the highest award of the National Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Sagan was elected Chairman of the Division of Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society, President of the Planetology Section of the American Geophysical Union, and Chairman of the Astronomy Section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. For twelve years he was the editor-in-chief of Icarus, the leading professional journal devoted to planetary research. He was cofounder and President of the Planetary Society, a 100,000-member organization that is the largest space-interest group in the world; and Distinguished Visiting Scientist, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology.
In their posthumous award to Dr. Sagan of their highest honor, the National Science Foundation declared that his "research transformed planetary science… his gifts to mankind were infinite." D. 1996.

It's very hard to give a review and rating for the entirety of this book. From chapter to chapter it feels disjointed and varies quite a bit in both content and quality. I seem forced to review the different parts and chapters individually.
The first "part" of the book, titled "Science and Human Concern" and encompassing the first four chapters, showcases Sagan's eloquent and brilliant writing especially well. In these chapters I learned new things and gained a new appreciation for Einstein's incredible mind; One would be hard-pressed to argue the book doesn't start off strong.
The next part, called "The Paradoxers", starts of well enough, explaining and refuting various pseudoscientific and paranormal beliefs. But in chapter 7 Sagan spends over 50 pages refuting the claims made in a specific book called "Worlds in Collision" written by a specific author named Velikovsky. This would be fine if I were reading Broca's brain 30 years ago when it was published, but as it is I have never heard anyone repeating the ridiculous claims spouted by Velikovsky so I wasn't very interested in their refutations. I ended up skimming through most of the chapter. This is just one of the ways the book suffers from how dated it is. After this, part two continues with a couple good chapters, the first on theological arguments and second on science fiction.
The next two parts of Broca's Brain are both mostly concerned with astronomy, space exploration, and humanity's future. They continue to vary in quality from a great chapter on Robert H. Goddard's tireless work towards space exploration to a terribly boring chapter on choosing namesakes for features of other planets.
The final part skeptically examines religion and does a pretty good job until it ends with a chapter concerning hypothesis that explains religious stories and experiences in terms of subconscious memories of birth that's almost Freudian in its level of wild speculation.
Broca's Brain is magnificent at times, but at times it's dense enough to make up for it, and overall it just felt too muddled for me to give it a very good rating.

"العلم هو طريقة للتفكير أكثر مما هو مجموعة من المعارف". تقرأ هذه الحكمة مفتتحا أول فصول هذا الكتاب الرائع المكون من مجموعة من المقالات المنتقاة لعالم الفلك و الكاتب و الأديب و الإعلامي الأمريكي ذي الأصول الروسية كارل ساجان. ببساطة يقدم هذا الكتاب مادة علمية معقدة بصورة أدبية سهلة بل و لذيذة، تذكرنا ببرنامج "العلم و الإيمان" لعملاقنا الراحل "مصطفى محمود" رحمه الله.
يهدف الكاتب في كل مقالاته إلى التحريض على المنهج العلمي في التفكير، الذي هو تحليل نقدي متشكك في المقام الأول، لا يتقبل الحقائق إلا بعد اختبارها و إقامة الدليل على صحتها ويرى أن "أهم ترياق للأفكار الخاطئة ألا نأخذ أي شيء كأمر مسلم به". كما يقر العالم المرموق حقيقة هامة، وهي أن "النقص ليس في الذكاء الذي هو متوفر بكثرة، و لكنه في التدريب المنظم على التفكير النقدي الذي هو سلعة نادرة"، ولذلك فإن عامة الناس كثيرا ما يتقبلون الإشاعات و الأكاذيب و يتعرضون للغش والخداع من مروجي الخرافة و مدعي القدرات الخارقة، بل و يرفضون الحقيقة الواضحة بكذب هذه الادعاءات، وهم "نادرا ما يقرون بالجميل لمن ينبههم إلى سذاجتهم". وينصح الكاتب الناس بتصعيب المهمة على هؤلاء الأدعياء بمطالبتهم بإثبات ادعاءاتهم بشكل علمي واضح، "فالادعاءات غير العادية تحتاج أدلة غير عادية".
وفي واحد من أمتع فصول الكتاب يحكي لنا الكاتب قصة بداية العالم الجليل "ألبرت أينشتاين" واكتشافاته العظيمة، و التي يروج من خلالها لتغيير أساليب تدريس المواد العلمية التقليدية القائمة على التلقين والحفظ و العرض النظري، لأنها تظلم الطالب وتظلم قبله العلم بإخفاء حقيقته المثيرة الشيقة تحت لحاء قاتم منفر يعافه الدارس (وهو ما يذكرني بكراهية أغلبنا للمواد العلمية أثناء التعليم الأساسي)، ويستشهد على رأيه بمقولة أينشتاين أنه "بوسع المرء أن يقضي على نهم حيوان مفترس في صحة جيدة إن هو أجبره بالسياط أن يأكل بصورة مستمرة سواء كان جائعا أم لا". و يعود الكاتب إلى النقطة الأولى، وهي أن الهدف من التعليم ليس تحزين المعلومات، وإنما تبني التفكير العلمي الناقد و المبدع. وهذه النقطة بالذات تفسر واقعنا المحزن كمجتمع مصري و عربي، فرغم كثرة حملة الشهادات في بلادنا، إلا أن اغلبنا لا ينتهج التفكير العلمي في حياته، فيعيش عشوائيا دون تخطيط، متخذا الخرافة دليلا، فاقدا القدرة على النقد الموضوعي لا يفرق الغث من السمين، وهو ما يترك الفرصة للفاسدين و العاجزين و الطغاة للتحكم في حياتنا و مصائرنا.
وفي فصل ممتع آخر، يقارن الكاتب بين العلم الحقيقي و أدب الخيال العلمي و سينماه، معتبرا أن "العلم أكثر تعقيدا و براعة و يكشف عن كون أكثر ثراء و يستثير بقوة شعورنا بالعجب و الاندهاش. كما أن له فضيلة إضافية وهامة – وهي عمق المعاني التي تحملها الكلمات الصادقة"، وعليه فهو يرى أن عرض العلم و تصويره بما يليق به و بما يبرز جوهر يغني عن الخيال العلمي بل و يتفوق عليه.
ويرى عالمنا أننا كحضارة بشرية لازلنا في طور الصعود، و أننا لم نصل بعد إلى غاية التقدم، وان هدفنا كبشر في بحثنا الدائم عن الحضارات خارج كوكب الأرض "ليس إرسال الرسائل، فنحن لازلنا صغارا و متخلفين، و إنما هدفنا هو الاستماع".
ولا يخفي الكاتب ميله لرفض الأديان و نقدها (أبواه يهوديان)، ويرى أن الكثير من الفظائع و المصادرة على حقوق الناس في التساؤل و النقد و البحث في ح��يقة الكون ونشأته قد تمت باسم الدين، لذلك لا يصح أن يكون الدين عقبة في سبيل تطور الحضارة وتقدمها.
يعيب هذا الكتاب في رأيي أمران: الأمر الأول عدم توضيح تاريخ كتابة المقالات المتضمنة فيه، وهو أمر في غاية الأهمية لربط المحتوى بواقعنا خصوصا و أن المؤلف قد توفي عام 1996، و التطور العلمي أصبح متسارعا بشكل يصعب ملاحقته. أما الأمر الثاني فهو ركاكة الترجمة في بعض المواضع، والمترجم المجتهد (د.أيمن توفيق) معذور فيما يخص الترجمة، لأن ترجمة المادة العلمية وكما هو معروف ليست بالأمر السهل.
الكتاب متوفر بسعر زهيد للغاية رغم جمال غلافه وجودة طباعته و إخراجه، كما انه يخلو تقريبا من الأخطاء الإملائية والمطبعية.
أدعو الجميع لقراءة هذا الكتاب والاستفادة منه.

مجموعة مقالات متفرقة كتبها عالم الفلك الشهير (كارل ساجان) ليمارس هوايته المفضلة في إثارة الفضول العلمي - والخيال العلمي كذلك - لدى عموم الجمهور. كتاب لطيف يدفعنا للتفكير في الكون والدنيا والماضي والمستقبل. يحتاج الإنسان بين الحين والآخر إلى قراءة كتاب علمي من هذا النوع، ولهذا سنعقد الجلسة المقبلة من نادي الكتاب بمكتبة الإسكندرية لمناقشة هذا الكتاب، سننتظركم يوم الخميس 27 أغسطس 2015 في الخامسة مساء بمركز مؤتمرات مكتبة الإسكندرية. الدعوة عامة لحضور النقاش والمشاركة فيه حتى لمن لم يقرأ الكتاب. سيكون النقاش ممتعاً في كل الأحوال.

Broca's Brain is Carl Sagan’s report on the state of astronomical science, and science in general, as it was in the late 1970s. As such, the book is almost 50 years out-of-date with our present-day scientific luxuries and discoveries. It is for this reason that the book is not that interesting, even if Sagan wrote it. At best, the book allows the reader an opportunity to make comparisons between what we knew then and what we know now.
One of the more interesting topics is Sagan’s critical assessment of scientific charlatans. While the actual charlatans of Sagan’s time are now all but forgotten, the fact that they goaded Sagan into strongly condemning them gives rise to the conclusion that there will always be con artists and victims living among us. It only requires a vague scientific view of present-day society to see them operating in all aspects of life, science included but especially politics.
Along these same lines, a chapter towards the end of the book discusses religion from the perspective of scientific skepticism. This is probably the most timeless aspect of the book. However, the content is mostly an overview of his more thorough book on the subject, The Demon-Haunted World. Nonetheless, reading Sagan’s contemplations of religious beliefs is inspiring for those that love reality.
There are other comparisons that can be made with Sagan’s time including the relatively basic state of the scientific explorations of Mars and other planets, the total absence of the Hubble and Webb Telescopes, and the numerous planets that have since been discovered orbiting distant stars. While all of this helps to bring Sagan’s time into perspective, it also left me wishing that I was reading some other book of a more contemporaneous nature.

Knjiga je gotovo proročanska. U vrijeme kad ju je pisao, Sagan je s pravom bio zabrinut koliko pseudoznanost i antiintelektualna atmosfera sve više prožimaju američko i svjetsko društvo, a danas smo na žalost svjedoci koliko je to uznapredovalo.

i'm amazed that i was able to understand three quarters of this book with little or no help at all from any outside source. there were times when i had to use the dictionary or find someone on the internet who can explain physics to a near idiot in the domain; even so, i can give myself a pat on the back for this one.
of course, sagan writes for the masses, and this here is not real science, but more like an introduction to it, a taste.. even if it's a really small one for an expert, for someone like me, who struggles to understand the terms and imagine the actions, it's a step forward.
but i am so passionate about this subject! i love learning about the outer space and if physics is a part of it, then so be it! there are few things out there that i consider to be more worthy of attention than the mechanics of our universe and i'm sure that, throughout the years, i'll be able to understand even more!

كارل ساجان، هو حتماً من أعظم كتّاب ما يعرف باﻷدب العلمي ومن أكثر الذين يكتبون على الكوزمولوجي خصوصاً بطريقة فائقة الروعة.. وأعزو فضل معرفتي باﻷدب العلمي عموماً والكوزمولوجي خصوصاً إلى مترجم وباحث وروائي ومصوّر ورسام مصري شاب هو طارق كامل، عندما قرأت كتابه الذي ترجمه من أعمال العالم اﻷديب الفرنسي ميشيل كاسيه كتاب "فكرة السماء" ثم تحفته المختصرة لنفس الكاتب "ضو�� سرّي على حافة الزمان" الذي هو نصوص مخترة من كتابين لميشيل كاسّيه.. القراءة التي كانت متعة فائقة لماذا؟ أولاً لدراية المترجم الكاملة باللغة الفرنسية وإلمامه بكيفية ترجمة المصطلحات العلمية، ثانياً المعرفة الكافية بخصوص الموضوع المترجم منه وأعرف عن طارق كامل أنه دأب على مراقبة السماء والنجوم والاهتمام بدراسة الفلك والكونيات..
لماذا هذه المقدمة، في حال رؤيتك للتقويم أعلاه ستجده ينقص نجمة، يتقاسم هذه النجمة الناقصة كارل ساجان والمترجم.. يخيّل إليّ أن المترجم يواجه مشكلة حقيقية على مستوى الدراية العلمية والإلمام بالموضوع المترجم عنه، إذ لا يكفي تعلمك اللغة بأن يجعلك مترجماً ناجحاً خصوصاً في ميدان صعوبته مزدوجة من كونه أدباً وعلماً في نفس الوقت..
أما بخصوص ساجان، فمثلما ذكرت استحق هذا التقييم باقتدار وكلما كان حديثه في عمق تخصصه وجدت قدراً من المتعة لا حدّ له، في المقابل صدمني مرّتين، اﻷولى عندما ذكر أن اﻷولوية لتطوير موانع الحمل وليس أدوية السرطان، ثم تعريجه على ذكر أينشتاين وأنه كان صهيونياً .. فاﻷولى تعكس ضحالة لا تصدر عن عالم عظيم جليل بحجم كارل ساجان الذي تدين له الانسانية حتماً بالكثير، أما الثانية فهو خطء علمي ومنهجي لا يجب أن يقع فيه باحث مثله، إذ لم ترد مصادر نهائياً عن محاولة انضمام اينشتاين لحركة صهيوينية نهائياً سواءً في مذكراته أو ما كتب عنه، خلافاً أيضاً لمعتقدات أينشتاين الذي يصنف نفسه اشتراكياً ومعروفٌ أيضاً حجم العداء بين الاشتراكيّة والصهيونية الفاشيّة.. أستطيع أن أفهم كون أينشتاين "الملحد" يذكر أنه يهودي في ظلّ الهجمة النازيّة على اليهود واضطهادهم "بشكل تضامني يعني" وهذا الذي حدث بدافع إنسانيّ من أينشتاين الإنسان نفسه الذي رفض رئاسة إسرائيل عندما عرضت عليه.. ينوّح بسذاجة كارل ساجان على أنه ربما لو قبل أينشتاين لوصلت قضية "الشرق اﻷوسط" إلى حلول أكثر سلاماً، ويطرح "سلاميته" مرّة أخرى حين الحديث على اطلاق اسم رع-شالوم على كويكب أو قمر كمحاولة من العالمة التي فعلت ذلك للتقريب بين مصر وإسرائيل..
في النهاية كارل ساجان أديب وعالم عظيم، لكن عندما يتعلق اﻷمر بالاجتماع والسياسة، فغالباً مصدره هو الآلة الإعلامية المسيطَر عليه صهيونياً :)..
بخصوص الترجمة، أرضيتك العلمية ومعارفك السابقة ستفيدك في تجاوز أخطاء المترجم المملة والمثيرة للشفقة، إذا كان هذا كتابك اﻷول من الممكن أن تؤجله لحساب الكتاب الذي نشرته مكتبة اﻷسرة "الذي حرره ريتشارد داوكنز" و الكتابين المذكورين أعلاه..

Miscellaneous writings by Carl Sagan. I read it immediately after "Cosmos" was aired on Doordarshan (the national TV channel of India). Sagan is a great explainer - reading him will automatically engender a love for science!

A re-read after 13 years certainly was worth the effort for at least a few chapters. Although a lot of information must be now updated considering this being a 1979 (updated) edition, this book must have been intense at that time. An entire section is dedicated to debunking "Paradoxers" which occupies more than a quarter of the book, especially on Immanuel Velikovsky's theories.
Certain introductory chapters dealing with "Why Science?", "Albert Einstein" and "about the lack of public education in science" were very nice to read.
Other chapters that were interesting to read were related to The Solar System and the usage of Nomenclature within it; on life in our Solar System based on their atmospheres; a chapter based on the Surface and Atmosphere of Titan, the moon of Saturn; Climates of Earth and Mars; Asteroids and Meteorites; Planetary Exploration; Communication and Transportation Speeds; In defense of Robots and AI; the quest for Extraterrestrial Life; Views on God and Religion, our Galaxy and the Universe; and finally a chapter on the usage of psychedelic drugs and its usage to induce Perinatal Memories while relating it to understand the Origins and Nature of Religion and to Cosmology.
If only Mr. Sagan have had lived today, I would have loved to read a revised edition of this book now after nearly four decades of its first publication in 1974.

من قرأ لكارل ساجان من قبل لن يضيف له هذا الكتاب جديد, وأيضاً بسبب قدم الكتاب - نُشر في 1974 - كثير من المعلومات أصبحت قديمة, و للمفارقة ففي الوقت الذي كانت فيه تصوارات ساجان للتطور في مجال اللإتصالات والذكاء الإصطناعي متواضعة مقارنة بما تحقق الأن كانت تصوراته حول التقدم في مجال إستكشاف الفضاء متجاوزة لما تحقق للآن. ويؤكد هذا الفرضية المتعلقة بإرتباط التقدم في مجال إستكشاف الفضاء بالصراع بين الأمريكان والروس و الذي أنتهى مع نهاية الحرب الباردة أواخر الثمانينيات. و قد يكون التوجه الصيني للفضاء الخارجي محفز لإعادة الحماس لمجال إستكشاف الفضاء كما كان في الستينيات و السبعينيات.
تتبقى إشارة للترجمة: أدعى المترجم في مقدمته أنه أنتقى مقالات هذا الكتاب وحدد أسباب أختياره ببساطة المقالات و تعبيرها عن أفكار ساجان, و هذا كذب فالكتاب هو ترجمة لبعض المقالات التي قام ساجان نفسه بإختيارها ونشرت تحت عنوان

Una colección de 25 ensayos/artículos que hablan de temas tan variados como Origen del Universo, Religión, Creación, Vida Extraterrestre, Misiones Espaciales y pensamiento Humano, que resulta una extraordinaria lectura.
Es el primer libro que leo de Sagan, después de ver la serie de Cosmos, y solo puedo decir que lo recomiendo ampliamente, (si eres una persona religiosa, mantén la mente abierta) La habilidad que tiene para explicar temas complicados de Ciencia en un lenguaje tan sencillo y asimilable me parece una extraordinaria metodología de escritura.
Es el primer libro que leo de Sagan, después de ver la serie de Cosmos, y solo puedo decir que lo recomiendo ampliamente, (si eres una persona religiosa, mantén la mente abierta) La habilidad que tiene para explicar temas complicados de Ciencia en un lenguaje tan sencillo y asimilable me parece una extraordinaria metodología de escritura.

Museums have an inner world that the public never sees. In one of these hideaways, Carl Sagan was permitted to view the brain of Paul Broca, a surgeon who died in 1880. As Dr. Sagan looked at the cerebral remains of one of his heroes, he had this thought: “It was difficult to hold Broca’s brain without wondering whether in some sense Broca was still in there.”
Sagan wondered at a possible future where technology would allow us to download Broca’s memories. And then he wrote something that struck me. In considering the opportunity to literally read a mind, Sagan posited, “It would be the ultimate breach of privacy.”
I was a bit awed at Sagan’s willingness to troubleshoot the ethics of his own pipedream. After all, what if we could tap the intelligence of brilliant men and women, now deceased? It’s a fascinating thought, but also a troubling one. I admired Sagan for volunteering the questionable nature of his own desire for access.
The above is just one of many intriguing reflections offered by Carl Sagan in Broca’s Brain: Reflections on the Romance of Science. This book is a collection of essays, many previously published in magazines. With a firm command of both science and humanity, Sagan explores a range of issues related to our existence. Especially engrossing, even haunting, are his ruminations on the process of dying. Sagan writes with candor about the issues facing our species. He does not patronize readers with comfort for comfort’s sake, but neither does he gravitate toward sensationalism.
Sagan’s dialogue style is thoughtful and dignified, but with splashes of humor. He also throws some pointed jabs at absurd notions that regrettably retain traction in modern society. As our world becomes almost wholly dependent on scientific technology, works like this will be an essential frame of reference for laypersons. The more I read Sagan and others, the more I am convinced that being conversant in science is a matter of civic responsibility.
With some technical exceptions, the content of this book is very accessible. For those who have already read other works by Carl Sagan, I highly recommend it. If you have not yet tried Sagan, I suggest starting with the novel Contact, or getting a hold of his groundbreaking work Cosmos. The latter is available on DVD and in book form.

لا أعلم لماذا شرعت في قراءة هذا الكتاب، و لا أعلم لماذا ضغطت على نفسي و قررت الاستمرار رغم ضجري الشديد من الموضوعات و أسلوب عرض المعلومات العلمية! لست نادمة على اقتنائه، كما أني لن أكمله، فقد وصلت إلى منتصف الطريق و وجدت نفسي زاهدة في قراءة أي كتاب بسبب حالة الملل التي سببها لي.
المعضلة الحقيقية، أني في ظروف أخرى كنت سأتحلى بصبر أكبر و أكمله، و لكنني الآن أكاد أجد وقتًا لقراءة بعض الصفحات، فسيكون من العسير أن تكون هذه اللحظات القليلة المسروقة من نصيب كتاب مثل هذا!
و مما زاد الطين بِلَّة، قماءة الترجمة و الفشل الذريع في التعبير بأسلوب يتناسب مع محتوى الكتاب، المترجم كان يذكرني بترجمة المركز القومي للترجمة لرواية جويس الشهيرة " عولس "...حسبي الله.
و لا أعتقد أني سأعيد القراءة لساجان.

Considering this book was written forty years ago, it's a masterpiece. In it, Carl Sagan covers a range of different topics. In one whole chapter, which I think is the bulk of this book, Sagan makes a critical analysis of Velikovsky's book, Worlds in Collision. Sometimes the borderline between science and pseudoscience is so thin, you have to be a scientist to point it out. That being said, in most cases we can apply methods and tools of skepticism and critical thinking to come to a sound decision. Sagan wisely asserts that skepticism is not denialism or cynicism. It's just that you need to ask for sufficient evidence in case of extraordinary claims.

ملاحظة صغيرة:
الفروض والنظريات اللي بيقدمها العلم النظري عبر السنين، لا يؤكدها أو يلغيها إلا العلم التجريبي، وبدون نتيجة إيجابية حقيقية بالتجربة لإثبات الفرضية، تبقى الفرضية – بلغة العلم – مجرد إحتمالات وشكوك، مهما كانت تبدو منطقية، رغم أنه يوجد ما يؤمن بها، ويبحث عن طريق لإثباتها، بنهج شكوكي خالص، استنادا على قاعدة مشتركة تم الإتفاق عليها خلاص. كلام كوبرنيكوس و جاليليو كانت كلها "تخمينات" منطقية جدا، مبنية على قاعدة علمية مشتركة متفق عليها، لم يتم تأكيدها تماما إلا بعد ظهور كلام اينشتاين بكام قرن، العلم بصفة عامة بيسمح بالتجديف، مع وجود قاعدة عامة، أو "ما يدل عليه"، والتجديف –ليست كلمة سلبية- والمنهج ا��شكوكي للعلم بيفتح مساحة كبيرة للمستقبل، ليؤكده أو ينفيه، او يعيد بناؤه من جديد، معتمدا على ماضي تم اثباته خلاص. اجد إن الإنسان المؤمن بالعلم هو مؤمن بوجود مساحة ما أخرى من الغيب/الغير معلوم، ولكنه غيب في فقاعة أخرى، غير الإيمان بالغيب عند الأديان، رغم ان في الأديان يوجد ما يمكن أن نسميه ب "ما يدل عليه" من سياقات تاريخية سابقة، وقف العلم ضد معظمها بكلام عن الخرافة وعدم المنطقية والتحريف، و وقف عند بعضها وقوف مبهم، رافض مع فتح مساحة للعلم بإنه في المستقبل "مع تطور العلم والتكنولوجيا ... إلخ " سوف تعرفون كذا وكذا، بيتهيألي أن الإلحاد لأسباب علمية، هو إلحاد لا يزال محل أسئلة، لأن العلم لم يكتمل بعد، ولأنه مبني على حقائق أولية زي نسبية أينشتاين ونظرية التطور، أن العلم لا يزال في أول الطريق، وأن مساحة الغامض والغير معلوم لا يزال يملأ أكثر من نصف الكوب. وأن العلمي لا يزال يرى في الأسئلة الغير مجابة بعد، أن العلم سوف يجيب بكذا وكذا، مع وجود ما يدل عليه، وأن المؤمن ايضا يرى أنه يوجد حياة أخرى، مع وجود ما يدل عليه. في فقاعة أخرى غير فقاعة العلم. وأجد في النهاية أن السياق الأفضل للقبول بالعلم كمفسر لكل شيء وبانه لا يزال مستمر ولم ينته بعد، هو سياق اللا أدرية. لان مساحة الشك والغامض والغير معلوم فيها أكبر. بس هو في الآخر الإيمان المطلق والإلحاد اليقيني المباشر دول خيارات راديكالية مفهومة ولها تبريراتها الكتير يعني.
وبناء عليه تحدث ساجان في فصل (الكون الحامي) بشكل غريب عن تفسيره لتجارب الإقتراب من الموت، وإنه ربط التجربة بحالات التذكر المفاجئ لحالات الولادة تحت تأثير العقاقير المهلوسة في المستشفيات، بشكل شكوكي ومنحاز تماما لصف العلم، لان –بنظره- يوجد من كلام العلم ما يدل عليه، وليس ما يثبته بشكل نهائي، يقول أنه ربما كان، وليس يوجد ما يثبت ذلك، لان هناك من مر بهذه التجارب دون تناول أي عقاقير، ربط ساجان كان غريب، ناتج عن "إيمان" عميق بالعلم، وليس عن تصديق حقيقي بالعلم ناتج عن تجربة، اكتفى فيها بنجاحات العلم الساحقة كقاعدة بني عليها هذا الإفتراض/التجديف. على يقين بانه سيأتي من يؤكد كل هذا، ولو بقدر ما من التعديل.
الفروض والنظريات اللي بيقدمها العلم النظري عبر السنين، لا يؤكدها أو يلغيها إلا العلم التجريبي، وبدون نتيجة إيجابية حقيقية بالتجربة لإثبات الفرضية، تبقى الفرضية – بلغة العلم – مجرد إحتمالات وشكوك، مهما كانت تبدو منطقية، رغم أنه يوجد ما يؤمن بها، ويبحث عن طريق لإثباتها، بنهج شكوكي خالص، استنادا على قاعدة مشتركة تم الإتفاق عليها خلاص. كلام كوبرنيكوس و جاليليو كانت كلها "تخمينات" منطقية جدا، مبنية على قاعدة علمية مشتركة متفق عليها، لم يتم تأكيدها تماما إلا بعد ظهور كلام اينشتاين بكام قرن، العلم بصفة عامة بيسمح بالتجديف، مع وجود قاعدة عامة، أو "ما يدل عليه"، والتجديف –ليست كلمة سلبية- والمنهج ا��شكوكي للعلم بيفتح مساحة كبيرة للمستقبل، ليؤكده أو ينفيه، او يعيد بناؤه من جديد، معتمدا على ماضي تم اثباته خلاص. اجد إن الإنسان المؤمن بالعلم هو مؤمن بوجود مساحة ما أخرى من الغيب/الغير معلوم، ولكنه غيب في فقاعة أخرى، غير الإيمان بالغيب عند الأديان، رغم ان في الأديان يوجد ما يمكن أن نسميه ب "ما يدل عليه" من سياقات تاريخية سابقة، وقف العلم ضد معظمها بكلام عن الخرافة وعدم المنطقية والتحريف، و وقف عند بعضها وقوف مبهم، رافض مع فتح مساحة للعلم بإنه في المستقبل "مع تطور العلم والتكنولوجيا ... إلخ " سوف تعرفون كذا وكذا، بيتهيألي أن الإلحاد لأسباب علمية، هو إلحاد لا يزال محل أسئلة، لأن العلم لم يكتمل بعد، ولأنه مبني على حقائق أولية زي نسبية أينشتاين ونظرية التطور، أن العلم لا يزال في أول الطريق، وأن مساحة الغامض والغير معلوم لا يزال يملأ أكثر من نصف الكوب. وأن العلمي لا يزال يرى في الأسئلة الغير مجابة بعد، أن العلم سوف يجيب بكذا وكذا، مع وجود ما يدل عليه، وأن المؤمن ايضا يرى أنه يوجد حياة أخرى، مع وجود ما يدل عليه. في فقاعة أخرى غير فقاعة العلم. وأجد في النهاية أن السياق الأفضل للقبول بالعلم كمفسر لكل شيء وبانه لا يزال مستمر ولم ينته بعد، هو سياق اللا أدرية. لان مساحة الشك والغامض والغير معلوم فيها أكبر. بس هو في الآخر الإيمان المطلق والإلحاد اليقيني المباشر دول خيارات راديكالية مفهومة ولها تبريراتها الكتير يعني.
وبناء عليه تحدث ساجان في فصل (الكون الحامي) بشكل غريب عن تفسيره لتجارب الإقتراب من الموت، وإنه ربط التجربة بحالات التذكر المفاجئ لحالات الولادة تحت تأثير العقاقير المهلوسة في المستشفيات، بشكل شكوكي ومنحاز تماما لصف العلم، لان –بنظره- يوجد من كلام العلم ما يدل عليه، وليس ما يثبته بشكل نهائي، يقول أنه ربما كان، وليس يوجد ما يثبت ذلك، لان هناك من مر بهذه التجارب دون تناول أي عقاقير، ربط ساجان كان غريب، ناتج عن "إيمان" عميق بالعلم، وليس عن تصديق حقيقي بالعلم ناتج عن تجربة، اكتفى فيها بنجاحات العلم الساحقة كقاعدة بني عليها هذا الإفتراض/التجديف. على يقين بانه سيأتي من يؤكد كل هذا، ولو بقدر ما من التعديل.

لو كان التقييم لأفكار الكتاب فقط لأعطيته 7 درجات من عشر ، فالكتاب يتناول موضوعا طالما استهواني وهو الرؤية الفلسفية لما وراء نظريات العلم الجافة ، فنظرية مثل نظرية النسبية لايمكن في اي وضع فهمها في ضوء قوانين رياضية جافة وتجاهل الجانب الفلسفي منها والذي أثر بشكل صادم في طريقة تفكير البشر عامة والمنظّرين الفلاسفة بشكل خاص .
أما مايجب الحديث عنه حقا فهو حركة الترجمة للكتب الأجنبية ، كنت وأنا صغير أدرس أن الخليفة فلان أو السلطان فلان شجع حركة الترجمة و أن الدولة الأسلامية تطورت عندما توسعت في ترجمة ونقل واستيعاب علوم الحضارات الأخرى مثل الحضارات الساسانية والاغريقية و الهندية ، أما مايحدث الآن من انحدار مستوى الترجمة - على شحّتها- فهو من أقوى الأدلة على قبوعنا في قاع الأمم للأسف .
مستوى الترجمة سيء من حيث الأسلوب الأدبي فهو يبعث على الملل في مواضع كثيرة على الرغم من موضوع الكتاب الشيق ، و ضعيف أيضا من حيث ترجمة المصطلحات العلمية وضبطها قياسيا مع المصطلحات المتعارف عليها في العلم ، فأنت تستطيع ان تترجم أى كلمة انجليزية الى عدة كلمات عربية والعكس ، ولكن المصطلح العلمي ليس له الا مقابل واحد في كل لغة واستخدام مترادفات أخرى يفقد الكلمة مدلولاتها العلمية .
ولذلك أعطي النسخة المترجمة من الكتاب 4 نقاط على مقياس من عشر نقاط

Una antología de ensayos no tan variados como uno podría pensar a priori si se guía solo por el titulo y la sinopsis. Aun así, una muy correcta selección, apasionante y sugerente aunque muchas veces se nos hable de la mas árida, compleja e ininteligible astrofísica. Leyendo estos ensayos tan antiguos -casi cuarenta años desde que se publicaron originalmente- es difícil no sentir lastima por todo lo que Sagan se ha perdido en estos últimos veinte años desde su muerte. No se si estaría contento por los avances hechos hasta ahora y los numerosos descubrimientos que, de vez en cuando, los informativos tienen a bien compartir con nosotros, dándonos su versión mas pedorra y sensacionalista, o por el contrario, se sentiría decepcionado por la velocidad a la que se dan estos descubrimientos, mucho más lenta de lo que pensaba y nos transmite en sus ensayos.

I've been on a Sagan kick, but this was a tough read to get through. The book is a little technical, but even more tedious in sections, discussing in depth discoveries of the 1950s and 1960s. The best parts of the book require a grasping understand of the nature of present day astronomy to compare and contrast with what Sagan thinks will occur. Ever the optimist, it is a little disappointing to realize that we have not come close to the explorations that Sagan envisioned in the late 1970s. Some of his hopes have been achieved, and he would have been awed by the discoveries made by the Cassini and Huygens probes, making this book bittersweet knowing that he will never have the opportunity to comment on today's discovery. A suggestion for future readers would be just to skip the vivisection of Dr. Velikovsky, unless you want an example of what would happen to the likes of homeopathy or astrology if scientists truly decided to turn their attention to those false disciplines.

Carl Sagan was a famous science popularizer. In Broca’s Brain, Sagan collected 25 essays he wrote on a wide range of scientific topics.
My favorite chapters are about cranks and nutcases. When you are a famous science man, people want to challenge you to battles of wit.
I have one issue with the book, and it might be petty to mention it, but the format is a trade paperback. It is not illegible, but the narrow pages render holding the book difficult for my fat and clumsy hands. Trade paperbacks have another flaw; the spine gets cracked too easily.

It took me a lot more time than I expected, mainly because I kept checking for update information about most of the interesting topics. I still love Carl Sagan's writing though.

I read most of Carl Sagan's Broca's Brain: Reflections on the Romance of Science while I was in Guatemala in January. I had never read any of Sagan's work before, and rather like well-written popularizations of science. Some of the chapters were, however, well beyond my own knowledge; but I soldiered through them.

Lectura interesante donde Sagan toca temas que normalmente pasaría por alto, sin ponerles tanta importancia. Va de cuestiones sobre creencias de las antiguas civilizaciones, experimentando encuentros con seres de otros planetas hasta controversias como los poderes mentales.
Sin embargo todo el libro se trata de buscarle 3 pies al gato haciéndolo cansado en ocasiones. Y si bien es cierto que en la ciencia siempre debe ser cuestionado todo, su necedad me llama mucho la atención. Por otro lado, es lo mas cercano que estaré de platicar de algo así con él, cuestion que habría disfrutado de sobremanera. Si se quiere leer algo un tanto distinto y más personal sobre el señor Sagan, este es un buen libro para pasar el rato.

Classic Sagan, making me regret not pursuing an astronomy degree.
Great book, though be aware that this it is not like Cosmos or Pale Blue Dot, but a collection of essays that he wrote and published in various magazines.
The only thing keeping this book from 5 stars, imo, is the chapter spawning 70 pages where Sagan disproves the arguments of a book that I'm quite certain that no one has even heard of. It was a gruelling experience reading that part.
As with all his books, it will make you feel dumb, yet it will leave you just a little bit smarter and a little less lost on this weird planet. Loved it, just as much as I love Sagan. Dude's awesome.

This is really hard to rate because it reads more like a collection of essays than a book. I'd say a vast majority of it is about a 4 star read with two sections that really weren't doing it for me. It weirdly ends with Sagan talking about whether or not it's possible for us to remember our own births. I probably would have given it four stars if he hadn't ending on that note because that was a bit weird.
But I love Sagan's optimism for the future. I feel like reading this now, when everything feels like a complete dumpster fire, is really comforting. It's a nice reminder that the world still has potential and no matter how shitty things get science is still really freakin' cool.

Muita gente vai associar o nome de Carl Sagan à série de TV “Cosmos”, produzida com sua esposa Ann Druyan, lançada nos EUA em 1981 e exibida no Brasil entre 1982 e 1983. Astrônomo e astrofísico norte-americano, Sagan foi um excelente divulgador da ciência, e também publicou vários livros, acadêmicos, para leigos e a ficção “Contato”.
Li quase toda a obra de Sagan. Seu texto é muito claro, encanta o leitor quando exalta mas maravilhas da ciência, instiga a curiosidade a cada linha e provoca reflexões. “O Romance da Ciência” foi publicado nos EUA em 1979, chegou ao Brasil apenas dez anos depois, mas só fui lê-lo agora.
A obra reúne 25 trabalhos do autor. Parte deles são transcrições de palestras, republicação de artigos de revistas científicas e alguns inéditos. Três ou quatro textos farão a alegria de um estudante de física, mas pela primeira vez fugiram ao meu alcance, principalmente por conta das fórmulas. Lindas de ver, mas incompreensíveis para mim. Há outro senão, mas esse é pelo fato de eu ter esporeado tanto tempo para ler. Escritos há mais de 40 anos, alguns capítulos ficaram desatualizados.
