The Alter Ego Effect: Defeat the Enemy, Unlock Your Heroic Self, and Start Kicking Ass Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 1,300 ratings

A top performance expert reveals the secret behind many top athletes and executives: creating a heroic alter ego to activate when the chips are down.

There’s only one person in the way of you unleashing your potential: you. There’s also one person who can move you out of the way so you can perform at your peak.

That person is already inside you. You just need to unlock them. This other part of you is your alter ego. After 21 years of working with elite athletes, performers, and leaders, Todd Herman has discovered how you can use your alter ego to achieve the seemingly impossible. It all clicked for Todd when he met Bo Jackson.

When Herman met Bo Jackson, the professional athlete told him, “Bo Jackson never played a down of football in his entire life.” Bo explained that when he was young, he’d get into trouble because of chaos caused by his anger issues. Then, he saw Friday the 13th and became fascinated by the cold, calculating nature of Jason Voorhees. In that moment, he resolved to stop being Bo Jackson and start being Jason the moment he stepped on the field.

In this transformative guide, Herman teaches you how to create and control an alter ego like Bo - and the thousands of other athletes, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and entertainers who have used this simple tool to change their lives. Herman also shares his own story: He knew that inside was a confident, self-assured, intelligent person who could help others get better results in their lives. When he started using Superman’s classic trick - putting on a pair of glasses - he learned to trigger the specific traits he needed to achieve his goals.

The Alter Ego Effect is not about creating a false mask - it’s about finding the hero already inside you. It’s a proven way of overcoming the self-doubt, negativity, and insecurity that hold you back and empowering you to ultimately become your best self.

I am really looking forward to reading this book! It just arrived today but it had glue on the top edge of the so many of the pages were stuck together and one page was missing the top 1/3. I am not going to go through the hassle of sending it back for a replacement. Just might want to check quality control.

I’ve consumed dozens of self-help books and countless self-help podcasts in the last 12 months, trying to get back on track after a rough patch. I've felt unready and decidedly unwilling to curb this new habit until now. After reading this book, I feel for the first time in a long time that I have a plan and — best of all — hope. I am 100% clear that it's time to hit the pause button on compulsively gathering more and more and more information and to finally take action again. The book is that original, that inspiring, that solid. And while the author, Todd Herman, makes clear that the book does not contain a magic/easy button or a path of breadcrumbs to a pot of gold, it sort of does. His approach DOES seem a bit magical, super doable, and to deliver great rewards. But it also makes a TON of sense. Todd Herman is brilliant in the way he articulates an innovative but clear, accessible methodology for improved performance or transformation on the one hand, while tapping into deep truths that we all recognize on some level on the other. He also offers plenty of historical, anecdotal, and scientific evidence for many of his claims, but it felt more illustrative than absolutely necessary as the real prize here is in his approach not the underlying argument.

One thing I want to make clear: this book is really for anyone dealing with either a problem they want to overcome or a goal they want to achieve —- as well as those seeking a more comprehensive lifestyle overhaul. I had listened to the author being interviewed on Inspire Nation, a podcast, and was really really keen to learn more. But when I first began listening to the book, I became concerned that it was only for great athletes aspiring to be the best or entrepreneur types, already in the 99.9 percentile of performance, looking to close the gap. My worries were promptly addressed though as the author shares a plethora of highly relatable stories ... and manages to seamlessly navigate between issues/aspirations of his elite clientele and those of more everyday people with everyday issues. That’s probably one of the best things about the methodology he shares, how amazingly flexible and versatile it is.

Second, I see it as an amazing act of generosity for the author to share what really seems like proprietary information — including ALL of the how to — with others. He also manages to anticipate and then address all sorts of questions and potential mis-applications of his methodology, providing clear explanations and helpful strategies for addressing all, as though more than anything, his deepest desire is that all can benefit as much as possible from what he knows. That was what really struck me, took me by surprise (especially after buying all sorts of books only to find that the real nuts-and-bolts of the methods needed to be purchased separately): the sense that Todd Herman is so excited and inspired by the method's successes that he feels compelled to spread the word. And yet he somehow manages to do all of this without sounding hysterical or overly sales-hungry. Yeah ... he's a gifted thinker and communicator, who strikes just the right tone to rise above the din, inspire trust, and resonate deeply with today’s audience.

Like many others, I have played around with alter egos before, but never really thought of it in exactly that way. Very much looking forward to continuing down that path with more confidence, and more practical support, and also to use these techniques with my kids.

Cannot recommend this book highly enough!!

This book is fantastic. I never really thought about different egos and who shows up at each Field of Play. The book is so good I read it twice- truth! I’m going to sign-up for Todd’s online course to go deeper. The book has had a significant impact on my life and attitude. Thank you, Todd.

The Alter Ego Effect is the best personal development book I've read in years.

As you probably know by now, Todd Herman teaches you to create an alter ego character so you can unlock your peak performance potential.

I've used this concept in the past almost accidentally for stressful situations like public speaking and media appearances.

I would imagine myself as Tom Cruise (I'm not joking) and simplyy do what I imagine Tom Cruise would do.

Maybe I was faking it... but it worked a hell of a lot better than beating myself up because I wasn't feeling confident.

Now with The Alter Ego Effect, I'm using my official alter ego character to improve my performance in everything from photography to my corporate job to cooking to working out.

I highly recommend this book for people with confidence and performance anxiety issues.

Here's the reality: you don't have to be confident... because your alter ego will perform better than you ever could... and then in turn, you'll naturally get more confident!

My alter ego is a mix of Dr. Stranger, Tom Cruise, and the photographer Richard Avedon. It feels nutty writing it... but it's working!

I would have given this book 5 stars, but I have two issues with it:

1) It's longer than it needs to be
2) I wish it had worksheets and checklists at the end to help with the character creation process

Still, The Alter Ego Effect is excellent and I've recommended to my colleagues.

I posted a photo of the copy of the Alter Ego Effect book because I wanted to share it’s value. Perhaps you can’t see them all, but I marked each page with a post it note to remind myself to go back in and read a paragraph of intense value.

Throughout the book, I felt like I was being coached in a thoroughly clear and understandable way. I could hardly put the book down as I was so determined to do the work that the author lays out.

To think that all these years of watching events like the Olympics and gazing at super-human athletes thinking ‘oh I could never do that’ I now realize that we can create our own alter ego to help us to do the things our normal selves can’t do is truly mind-boggling.

As a mother to 2 small children, I cannot tell you how excited I am to have a toolkit to share with them to help them do life better.

The biggest shocker for me was the Superman story. We all know that movie and yet nobody really figured out who the real alter ego was.

I have already bought extra copies of this book and have mailed them to friends who I know can use this book as a catalyst to be a better entrepreneur or a present wife and Mom.

It’s an altogether fantastic read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book to keep in the collection

Well written. Easy to read and understand. Great concepts. Good storytelling. Now when I see high level sports guys or A list celebrities doing weird things, I think about this book. Pretty much what I got from this book is you dont show up as you to every event. Sometimes you need to be more like this and more like that to have better turn out. It is not being fake, it is focusing on your other skills that will help you shine in that particular situation. I call this politics. It works like a charm. And when you struggle with your ego and struggle with bringing your other traits to the table, thats when an 'alter ego' should be brought out to help you in that situation. So if you want to be more talkative and less shy for example, then remember that you are not defined as shy, rather youve focused your time on being shy and less time on being talkative, so you can increase that talkative character trait by working on it and if you need help being confident about it an alter ego can help you. So think of the most confident people or animals or what ever it is, and pretend to be them while you are in the scenario that you want to be talkative in. And then you can also have a special item that helps you / reminds you to transition into your alter ego so an example would be someone that has a lucky baseball card they hold in their pocket or a lucky coin . For the author of the book he put on glasses even though he didnt need them (not prescribed). But he felt smart when he put them on and thats the character trait he wanted to let shine . Very good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Alter Ego Effect

I follow Dr Stephanie Estima. She is a huge fan of Wonder Woman. When she presented Todd Herman as her mindset coach I bought and read immediately his book “The Alter Ego Effect” to know her better. And the book shed light on the different elements that many famous persons use to have access to their extraordinary world, finding their best and sometimes hidden qualities with the help of their alter ego. In some cases they succeed integrating their alter ego permanently in their personalities. My granddaughters use these principles when they disguise themselves as princesses
