The Art of Travel
Any Baedeker will tell us where we ought to travel, but only Alain de Botton will tell us how and why. With the same intelligence and insouciant charm he brought to How Proust Can Save Your Life, de Botton considers the pleasures of anticipation; the allure of the exotic, and the value of noticing everything from a seascape in Barbados to the takeoffs at Heathrow.
Even as de Botton takes the reader along on his own peregrinations, he also cites such distinguished fellow-travelers as Baudelaire, Wordsworth, Van Gogh, the biologist Alexander von Humboldt, and the 18th-century eccentric Xavier de Maistre, who catalogued the wonders of his bedroom. The Art of Travel is a wise and utterly original book. Don’t leave home without it.

i couldn't put my finger on why i didn't think this book was as great as de botton's other books. but then i realized it's because of 2 reasons.
1) the focus is very euro- and christian-centric. obvo, de botton is writing about what he knows (euro intelligentsia), but perhaps a book about travelling should be about things outside your sphere of knowledge. e.g., why is it so exotic for french-speaking de botton to go to the south of france? why go to a postcolonial barbados resort and consider that such a huge jump? i wish de botton had taken some non-Euro history/art/lit classes whilst at Cambridge.
2) de botton seems to be a bit of a dandy traveller. when he travels, he goes to resorts. or to friend's houses in the countryside where he gets treated to chocolate donut things in the morning. i can't imagine that he would ever, e.g., take a shit into a hole on a moving train or off the side of a boat or sleep in a tent in the middle of nowhere. he seems to put a lot of stock in the availability of chocolate, pastries, various other desserts. i imagine he wouldn't be able to rough it or go to places where chocolate desserts are not plentiful.
i've actually written fan mail to de botton and had/have a huge crush on him, but to be completely honest, i wanted a little more from this book.

"My body and mind were to prove temperamental accomplices in the mission of appreciating my destination."
That was NOT what I was expecting at all.. Still had some fun reading several historical tidbits though. I guess I misunderstood the title.

فرقی نمی کنه موضوعی که دوباتن ازش صحبت می کنه چیه، هر چی که باشه توانایی این رو داره که من رو با اون کتاب و موضوع به وجد بیاره. شوق و ذوقی که با "هنر سیر و سفر" تجربه ش کردم یکی به دلیل پرداختن ریزبینانه ی دوباتن به موضوعی بود که همه کم و بیش به طریقی تجربه می کنند و دیگری دید خلاقانه ای بود که نویسنده برای نوشتن این کتاب انتخاب کرده بود . برای منی که عاشق سفر هستم عنوان کتاب به تنهایی بدون توجه به نام نویسنده یا فصل بندی های جذابش می تونه چشم گیرباشه و اگه این دو خصیصه رو هم اضافه کنم این جذابیت تا کجا که نمیره!؟
دوباتن در نه فصل به هر موضوع ریز و درشت مربوط به سفر پرداخته..این ریزبینی و دقت نسبت به امور روزمره چیزی بود که سرحالم کرد. نویسنده با هنرمندی و خلاقیت تمام ددر کنار دیدگاه و پرداخت خودش نسبت به یکی از مقوله های سفر به سراغ دیدگاه های یک نویسنده ، عکاس، طراح، نقاش یا ... میره و این مقوله رو از دید اونها هم بررسی می کنه و به دفعات در این بین از مسائلی صحبت می کنه که می تونم قسم بخورم با وجود سفرهای بی شماری که داشتین هرگز بهش توجه نکردین
از دلشوره سفر میگه و وسایل مسافرت و غذاخوری ها و هتل ها ( که با نقاشی های زیبایی از ادوارد هاپر همراه شده که ای کاش رنگی بودند) علاقه ما رو به دیدن کشورهای خارجی با علاقه گوستاو فلوبر به شرق و سفرش به مصر همراه می کنه، از بدی دفترچه های راهنمای توریست حرف می زنه و ایرادات نگاه مسافران نسبت به بناهای تاریخی و معماری، از مناظر طبیعی صحبت می کنه و تاثیرشون روی هویت و تعالی شخصیتی و برای تشویق مسافران به دقت و دقت و دقت از نظرات ونگوگ و راسکین استفاده می کنه . همین همراه شدن با بزرگان تاریخ هنر و ادب خودش به تنهایی سفر جذابی رو رقم می زنه
چرا به سفر می ریم؟ به دنبال چه تاثیرات و تغییراتی روی زندگی مون هستیم که با سفر اعمال میشه؟ و آیا اصلا سفر چنین تاثیری داره؟ وقتی از عظمت و زیبایی های مقصد به وجد اومدیم و حس تصاحب و مالکیت اون زیبایی رو داریم کدام گزینه بهتریه؟ دقت در زیبایی و درک یا مثلا عکاسی و گذر ؟
بدون شک دوباره در اینده سراغ این کتاب رو می گیرم که خوندن دوباتن خودش سفری جالب و جذابه در حالی که تو اتاق خوابتون لم دادین

عیب بزرگ این کتاب داشتن عکسهای سیاه و سفید است. فکر میکردم به خاطر گران شدن نسخهی فارسی کتاب، ناشر عکسها را سیاه و سفید چاپ کرده است و نسخهی پی دی اف انگلیسی آن را به دست آوردم. ولی خیلی عجیب بود که عکسهای آن نسخه هم سیاه و سفید بودند و مجبور شدم حین خواندن عکسها را در اینترنت جستجو کنم. این کار را به شما هم پیشنهاد میکنم چرا که مشاهدهی عکسهای رنگی لذت خواندن را دوچندان میکند.

فلوبر مصرانه فرانسوی بودنش را نفی میکرد و نفرتش از کشور و مردمش به حدی عمیق بود، که موقعیت اجتماعیاش را به سخره گرفته بود. و از این رو برای ملیت مفهوم جدیدی را پیشنهاد کرد: نه بر حسب کشوری که در آن متولد شدهایم یا تبارمان به آن تعلق دارد، بلکه بر حسب مکانهایی که به آنها جلب میشویم. صفحات 114 و 115 کتاب
برای من موطنم جایی است که عاشقش باشم، یعنی مکانی که مرا به رویا میبرد، که حالم را خوب میکند. من به همان اندازه چینیام که فرانسوی هستم و از پیروزیهایمان بر اعراب هیچ شعفی به من دست نمیدهد زیرا از شکست آنها غمگین میشوم. فلوبر. ص 116 کتاب
تنها علت ناخشنودی انسان در آن است که نمیداند چگونه در اتاقش آرام بگیرد. پاسکال. ص 275 کتاب
سرانجام مجبور میشویم که بشریت را به اقلیتی (بسیار اندک) از کسانی که میدانند چگونه بیشترین بهره را از زندگی ببرند، و اکثریتی که میدانند چگونه از بیشترین کمترین را دریابند تقسیم کنیم. نیچه. ص 286 کتاب

In The Art of Travel, Alaine de Botton succeeds in the difficult task of opening the readers eyes to the many perceptual enhancements that travel can provide. It is not a travelogue of wild times in exotic countries, nor an informative list of places one can go. The Art of Travel is abstract, and focuses on concepts relating to the inner-self and individual psychology; the internal elements that affect, and are affected by, travel. Through avenues such as poetry, writings from some of histories great travel philosophers, artwork, writings from scenic painters, fetching photographs, and through his own personalized experiences and intellectual insights, de Botton provides the reader with a greater understanding and appreciation of travel; new paradigms that can result in more visceral and illuminating travel experiences.
De botton sees symbolism and connections in what may originally seem mundane. Here, in his chapter on anticipation, he writes of the riding of an airplane: "There is psychological pleasure in this takeoff, too, for the swiftness of the plane's ascent is an exemplary symbol of transformation. The display of power can inspire us to imagine analogous, decisive shifts in our own lives, to imagine that we, too, might one day surge above much that now looms over us."
“What we find exotic abroad may be what we hunger for in vain at home.
My favorite chapter was “On the Sublime”. It inspires the reader to reach for the beautiful in life, and it helped me realize some of the inner resources that one can develop, and the outer resources that can be recognized, when in new atmospheres. Reading that chapter was like a spiritual awakening; something akin to the transcending experience one feels when looking at slews of massive mountaintops or stretches of distant, barren deserts.
I would have given The Art of Travel four stars had it not been for de Botton losing himself (and me, the reader) in the chapter, "On Eye-Opening Art". At first, he provides sound, interesting, and useful philosophies on art. But the writing becomes too involved, becoming dry, pedantic, and completely unrelated to travel. For this short, but unforgivable period of time, de Botton’s sense of wonder, curiosity, and appreciation for beauty are absent, causing the book to momentarily lose its distinguished charm.
Overall, de Botton's writing is excellent. Smooth, flowing, poignant, and articulate, he is a pleasure to read. He is most insightfully expressive with regard to perspectives and perceptions, which, lucky for the reader, penetrate most portions of the novel. This is appropriate, because the travel experience itself is subjective. While two people may experience the same event at the same place and time, their perceptions and outtake will never be exactly the same. Therefore, at bottom, “travel” has to do with what goes on in the individual; those subjective inner-workings that de Botton happens to articulate so well.
According to de Botton, while the splendors of various sights and cultures can help aid the kind of growth the traveler may desire, one need not leave his bedroom in order to gain mind expansion and life changing insights. In that sense, The Art of Travel is not just a book about travel, but a book about seeing things in newer, more enlightening ways; a book about how to find and appreciate beauty, and through these processes, a book about enriching our life experience.
For a full travel reading spectrum, I recommend this, along with Bill Bryson’s Neither Here nor There: Travels in Europe, which is a lighter, funnier, and less intellectualized travel read.

سال گذشته یک مسافر تمامعیار بودم. بارها در کوپه نشسته بودم، بارها از گیت فرودگاه گذشته بودم و هزاران جاده دیده بودم که مثل مارهایی از اینجا تا افق خزیده بودند. برایم جذابیت داشت بدانم چطور میشود کیفیت سیر و سفر را بالاتر برد و بهرههای بیشتری از هر بار جابهجایی و رفتن و آمدن، گرفت. آلن دوباتن در این کتاب چیزی بیشتر از آنچه خواسته بودم، به من گفت. تلفیق هر فصل با شخصیتی منحصربهفرد -از ایوب نبی گرفته تا ونسان ونگوگ- و اشاراتی به زندگی و افکار آنها سفر را به چیزی بیش از تغییر مکان جغرافیایی تبدیل میکند.
کتاب بینظیری است. و دوباتن در آن، نه جدیت یک فیلسوف را دارد و نه سهلانگاری یک مسافر را که به قصد لذت بردن سفر میکند. او با فضاسازیهای خارقالعاده و پیوست متناسب زندگی دیگران به یک مکان، خواننده را در لذتی محض غرق میکند تا بداند سفر چطور میتواند اینچنین مسافر را به هدفی بالاتر از سیاحت و گشتوگذار، برساند.

Aside from love, few actvities seem to promise us as much happiness as going traveling: taking off for somewhere else, somewhere far from home, a place with more interesting weather, customs, and landscapes. But although we are inundated with advice on where to travel, few people seem to talk about why we should go and how we can become more fulfilled by doing so. In The Art of Travel, Alain de Botton, author of How Proust Can Change Your Life, explores what the point of travel might be and modestly suggest how we can learn to be a little happier in our travels.

به دیده چنین مینشیند، که کنشهای کمشماری، به اندازه ی مسافرت، به همگان وعده ی خوشبختی و خوشبحالی میدهند: پیاده شدن در جایی دیگر، جایی دور از خانه، مکانی با آب و هوای جالبتر، آداب و رسوم، و چشم اندازهای دیدنی. اما اگرچه ما غرق در توصیه های بسیاری هستیم درمورد اینکه به کجا باید سفر کنیم، چنین به دیده مینشیند که کمشماری از مردمان، درباره ی اینکه چرا باید برویم، و چگونه با اینکار کنار بیاییم، گفتگو میکنند. در کتاب هنر سفر، «آلن د. بوتون»، نویسنده میگویند: «باید یاد بگیریم که در سفرهامان خوشحالتر باشیم.»؛ ا. شربیانی

باخوندن سفرنامههای منصور ضابطیان و کتاب هنر و سیر و سفر آلن دوباتن تونستم کلی سفر ذهنی و تخیلی رو تجربه کنم. خواندن کتاب هنر و سیر و سفر به تنهایی باعث به دست آوردن تجربیاتی میشه که همونها علت این است که سفر یک هنر است و حتی با نگرشی فلسفی میشه بهش نگاه کرد. آلن دوباتن تونست به خوبی چرایی و فلسفه سفر و ادعای جمعآوری خاطرات را به طرز شگفتانگیزی در این کتاب تفسیر کنه؛ که شاید در ذهن خواننده باعث بشه به سفر جور دیگهای بیندیشه و دیدش به سفر کردن و سیاحت تغییر کنه.

As with all of De Botton’s books, this one is really a series of tightly crafted essays, each of which could stand on its own.
I think the key messages of the book are well captured in the very first chapter:
• Upon travelling to Barbados, de Botton wakes up the next morning and heads for the beach, then observes: “A momentous but until then overlooked fact was making itself apparent: I had inadvertently brought myself with me to the island.” As my wife occasionally remarks to me during our travels, in yet another rendering of the same insight: “Wherever you go, there you are!”
• “We are sad at home and blame the weather or the ugliness of the buildings, but on the tropical island we learn that the state of the skies and the appearance of our dwellings can never on their own either underwrite our joy or condemn us to misery.” This explains why people are happy even in Winnipeg and unhappy even in Tahiti.
These are probably good things to keep in mind when setting out on the road. The external voyage only has an impact if accompanied by an internal one.
De Botton has a wonderful ability to weave in all kinds of unexpected references to artists and writers, such as Charles Baudelaire and Edward Hopper. I don’t know much about either of them, but I’m still impressed with the author’s ability to casually tie together a 19th century French poet with a taste for opium and a 20th century American artist with a taste for painting Steak ‘n Shakes restaurants and Mobil gas stations.
You can appreciate this book quite nicely even while sitting on the couch at home, but I happened to read it while travelling in Honduras. Reading this book while on the road is a bit like having a guide by your side who, instead of telling you what you’re looking at, pokes you regularly in the ribs and tells you to open your eyes and see.

I read this book. Then I thought about it. Then I went back and read it again, less thoroughly, with a pen in hand looking to further unpack and appreciate the ideas and self-reflections they provoked in me. It has taken me a long time to get around to declaring this book “finished” enough for me to write a review.
The structure of this book is deceptively simple to summarize: each chapter is a juxtaposition of de Botton’s travel accounts with brief historical essays describing a famous author, thinker, or artist and their experience of travel and sense of place. Both sides of this juxtaposition were exquisitely crafted. Alain de Botton’s narratives are full of gentle humor and thoughtfully expressed reflections. The brief but fascinating accounts of (to name just a few) Flaubert’s impatience with the bourgeois and yearning for the exotic, van Gogh’s fervent desire to express his vision of Provence, and Alexander von Humboldt’s remarkable energy for discovery are the reading equivalent of a delightful tasting menu from some of the world’s most talented chefs. Each would have been incomplete without the other--de Botton’s highly self-aware travel narratives might seem tiresome or pompous if they were not woven into these wide-ranging explications of famous minds that have grappled with the same ideas. Conversely, these separate accounts of artistic and historical figures are given common purpose by de Botton’s commentary and contextualizing of selective sampling of their works.
Over the course of this little book, the author engages with a number of travel-related ideas: the unique flavor of anxiety that can only be produced by a guidebook, the poetry of the in-between places like airports and service stations that exist only for the purpose of traveling, the truths we reveal about ourselves when we confront the realities of a foreign location and find it different than our expectations.
The thesis that resonated with me the most was the simplest: the art of travel is really about consciously noticing. Being receptive and aware is the first and necessary step to being able to articulate our questions and opinions, and from there to render our experiences lastingly meaningful. This is, essentially, a personal goal for me this year, one that I am pursuing by approaching my reading more thoughtfully and by reflecting more frequently on the small ways I can gain full awareness of how I am interacting with people and my environment. So, although I am not embarking on any significant travels this year, this book nevertheless feels remarkably relevant to me personally.
Of course, this book does have a few flaws. There are no women represented except as companions or objects of desire for men. All forms of travel described are decidedly middle to upper class--no hitchhiking or camping stories here. (One gets the impression that Bill Bryson and Alain de Botton wouldn’t travel together very well.) The perspective is also limited only to Western thinkers and includes relatively few non-European locations (and most of those are former European colonies.) But these are forgivable in that the book is shaped by de Botton’s personal background, interests, and experiences. I merely mention it to warn those who would be put off by this kind of scope. All in all, I highly recommend it to people interested in vignette-style reflections on how we experience our immediate environment and what we can learn about ourselves by just paying more attention to it, whether at home or abroad.

However absurd the intense reactions provoked by such small (and mute) foreign elements may seem, the pattern is at least familiar from our personal lives. There too we may find ourselves anchoring emotions of love on the way a person butters his or her bread, or recoiling at his or her taste in shoes. To condemn ourselves for these minute concerns is to ignore how rich in meaning these details can be.”

کتابی برای خیلی از ایرانی هایی که سفر کردن بلد نیستن.( یادگرفتن، درک کردن و لذت بردن از سفر ...)
اینکه هنر چقدر می تونه در درک و تجربه ما از سفر مهم باشه، چیزی هست که در بخش اعظمی از این کتاب به اون پرداخته شده، چطور با نقاشی های ادوارد هاپر دیدی متفاوت نسبت به فضای اطراف داشته باشیم. چطور مثل فلوبر سرخورده از بورژوایی فرانسوی دل به رویاهای کودکی بسپاریم یا هماننده هامبولت برای فرار از روزمرگی دل به ماجراجویی های دیوانه کننده بدهیم.
دوباتن سعی کرده در ابتدای امر به مخاطب بگوید برای اینکه تجربه متفاوت همراه با درک فضای اطراف و داشته باشی درابتدا باید بی ارزش ترین اشیاء ارزش دیدن پیداکنند.
آگاهی هرچه بیشتر از نقاشی، ادبیات، شعر، تاریخ و هرچیزی که به تو در فراتررفتن از سطح عموم جامعه کمک کند تا تو به لذت واقعی برسی از مهمترین مسائل است. و اینکه چطور زندگی روزمره را تغییر بدهیم و تبدیل به یک دنیای متفاوت کنیم.
روزمرگی زمانی شکل می گیرد که همه چیز در سطح می ماند و عمق پیدا نمی کند.
آگاهی است که تو را فراتر از فضای موجود به عمق محیط اطراف می برد و لذت واقعی را به تو نشان می دهد.
دو باتن معتقد است، سفر زمانی مفید است که بتوانی زیبایی را کشف و درک کنی نه در جاهای همیشگی مثل کوه، جنکل و دریا بلکه در بی ارزش ترین اشیاء اطراف.
با تمام این اوصاف مشکلی که با این کتاب دارم ، حذف بخش دیگری از سفر که همان رنج ها و زشتی های سفر است.بخش مهمی از سفر که به شما آگاهی و درک واقعی از زندگی را می دهد، مواجهه با رنج های خود و دیگران در سفر و زشتی ه��یی است که مسافر در مشاهده هایش تجربه می کند.
در اینجاست که مسافر به معنای واقعی با حقیقت زندگی مواجه می شود و از سطح فراتر می رود.

Plot twist. 4 αστεράκια. Δεν το περιμένατε από μένα το ξέρω. Μου άρεσε πολύ. Τον αγαπώ τον Μποτόν. Όταν διαβάζω τα βιβλία του νιώθω ότι είναι κάπου δίπλα μου και τον ακούω να μου μιλάει. Μια εξαιρετική προσέγγιση για την τέχν�� του ταξιδιού, για τους ταξιδευτές και όχι τους απλούς τουρίστες. Μια προσέγγιση για τα κίνητρα που μας οδηγούν να κάνουμε ένα ταξίδι, τις προσδοκίες που έχουμε από αυτό και μέθοδοι για να παίρνουμε πραγματική χαρά από αυτά. Απολαυστικό.

لم يكن هذا الكتاب على قائمتي. واستبعدته زمناً بسبب موضوعه. فلستُ من هواة السفر ولا من أصحابه. غ��ر أنّ المتعة والفائدة التي تمتاز بها أعمال "آلان دو بوتون" قادتني إلى قراءته.
وقد وجدته كغالب ما قرأت من أعمال الرجل، كتاباً ماتعاً؛ يكتنز بالأفكار الجميلة، والفوائد المنثورة، والاقتباسات الذكية.
ترحال في الفنون على تنوّعها. يصحبنا في فصلٍ من فصول الكتاب إلى مكانٍ يصفه ولا نراه، رفقة مفكر أو كاتب أو رسّام أو رحّالة. ويطرح أفكاراً "لذيذة" تجعلنا نرى ما هو أبعد من المكان وأوسع من حدوده.
كيف يكتب "آلان" كتبه؟ كيف يقتنص أفكاره؟ وكيف يقتبس تلك الأقوال المميزة التي يلج منها إلى عوالم فسيحة في موضوعاته؟ هذه الأسئلة شغلتني وأنا أقرأ هذا الكتاب. وقد خطر لي أنّه رجل يجيد التسلّي والتمشّي في أفكاره، ويُحسن وصف الطرق التي تأخذه إليها تلك الأفكار. فيُخرج لنا كتبًا بديعة الصياغة، ماتعة الأفكار أياً كان الموضوع الذي يطرحه.
وقد جعلت الترجمة الجميلة والأدبية للحارث النبهان جمال النصّ عربياً فصيحاً. ولم أقف إلا على هنات معدودات، غير مفسدات، كنت أودّ لو تداركها. والشكر له واجب على حسن اختياره ما يترجم، وإبداعه في ما ترجم.

اگر به من بود اسم کتاب را هنر چگونه در مکانها بودن می گذاشتم! باتن در این کتاب ما را به وسیلۀ تجربه های شخصی خودش با نظریات و درونیات تعدادی آدم فهمیم دیگر مرتبط می کند. در این ادم های فهیم چندتاییشان را خیلی دوست داشتم و همین روایت را برام شیرین تر می کرد. باتن خوب بلد است چگونه آسمان ریسمون ببافد، او بلد است چگونه علاقۀ گوستاو فلوبر به شرق را به درک جدیدی از منظرها وصل کند یا نقاشی های ونگوک را به جوری دیگر دیدن مکان ها. اقرار می کنم در جاهایی از کتاب این روش بیان مسیلۀ او که مدام تفکرات فیلسوف یا نویسنده یا جهانگردی را به تجربیات خودش گره میزد و از دل آن فلسفه ای چیزی بیرون می کشید برایم خسته کننده شده بود. اما در دو فصل پایانی کتاب ونگوک و جان راسکین دستم را گرفتند و کتاب را برایم نجات دادند. این کتاب به موضوع مورد علاقۀ من پرداخته بود؛ چگونه محیط اطرافمان جوری نگاه کنیم که تا کنون آن را نمی دیدیم.

Honestly, this was a bit of a disappointment to me after reading such great reviews. I'm a traveler and while there were some ideas in this book that appealed to me, the majority of the philosophies and "ways of traveling" that were shared turned me off. Botton seems a bit arrogant and I felt he contradicted himself a number of times. Not all of us have wealthy friends in the French countryside or have the means of staying at an exclusive hotel in Barbados. I think Botton is missing out on the thrill of travel that is unknown, unsafe, and lacking in the pretentious wanderings of a big city.
I don't know, I guess Buttons ways and philosophies of traveling are not like mine.
This book just wasn't my cup of tea.

دوباتن و نوشتههای خوباش.
فصلی که دربارهی مصر حرف میزد رو خیلی دوست داشتم. همچنین فصلی که از طراحی کردن حرف میزد. دربارهی اینکه طراحی کردن اطرافمون باعث میشه خوبتر و دقیقتر نگاه کنیم و همین باعث میشه زیباییها رو جوری ببینیم که تا الان ندیده بودیم. انجاماش دادم و جالب و جذاب بود. فصل اول کمی سختفهم بود و به نظرم میومد که ترجمه خوبی نداره ولی بقیه فصلا شفاف بودن و راحت فهمیده میشدن و به نظر بیعیب میومدن.

Kitaplar ne güzel sürprizlere gebe ya. Şöyle; bu kitabı yakın zamanda okumak hiç aklımda yokken adını görünce Avignon'a giderken bavuluma atıvermiştim. Varınca okumaya başladım, Avignon-Arles arasında trende tamamladım. Alain de Botton, Seyahat Sanatı'nda da sıklıkla olduğu gibi günlük hayatın altındaki felsefi mekanizmaları didikliyor ve onları yalın diliyle okuyucuya aktarıyor. Bu defa konu seyahat, hem de yazarların, resimlerin, sanatın izinde seyahat. Lawrence Durrell'in peşinden Avignon'a gelmişken bundan daha doğru bir kitap alamazmışım yanıma - tam da benim yaptığım işi detaylandırıyor çünkü de Botton. Ama asıl sürpriz sonra karşıma çıktı çünkü kitabın Arles treninde okuduğum son bölümlerinden biri yazarın, Van Gogh'un izinden Arles'a yaptığı bir seyahati anlatıyor! Müthiş heyecan verici oldu bununla karşılaşmak, resmen edebiyat tanrılarının beni gözettiğini hissettiğim bir an oldu, yaşasın!
Bu şahane sürpriz kitapla kurduğum ilişkiyi bambaşka bir yere taşıdı tabii ama onun dışında da çok sevdim kendisini. Alain de Botton'un basit bir dille bir sürü zihin açıcı şey anlatmasını çok seviyorum, üstelik bir sürü şey de öğreniyor insan okurken.

Bu şahane sürpriz kitapla kurduğum ilişkiyi bambaşka bir yere taşıdı tabii ama onun dışında da çok sevdim kendisini. Alain de Botton'un basit bir dille bir sürü zihin açıcı şey anlatmasını çok seviyorum, üstelik bir sürü şey de öğreniyor insan okurken.

في الماضي كانت لفظة السفر مرادفة للمشقة في الطريق، لفراق الأحبة ومواجهة المجهول.
أما الآن فالسفر أضحى وسيلة للترويح عن النفس واستعراض الإمكانيات...موضة إن صح التعبير.
في هذا الكتاب يستكشف دو بوتون ملذات السفر ومشقاته من وجهة نظر فلسفية وأدبية.
الكتاب مقسم حسب المفكرين وأسلوبهم في السفر إلى جانب تأملات المؤلف ومقتطفات من رحلاته. من خلال هذه الأفكار والتأملات يسعى النص إلى توجيه عناية إلى القارئ لتفاصيل صغيرة قد تثري تجربته في السفر.
يتحدث المفكر السويسري عن الترقب والاستعداد للسفر، متعة المحطات وغرف الانتظار، مسرّة السفر وحيداً، الإثارة التي نجدها في الغريب وغير المألوف بالإضافة إلى جوانب أخرى.
من ناحية أخرى يقدم دو بوتون العزاء لمن لا يستطيع السفر بطرق عدة. منها أن الوجهات التي نصلها قد تكون أجمل عندما لا نزورها، وأنه بإمكاننا تحقيق متعة السفر في استكشاف ما حولنا أو عن طريق قراءة الكتب...إلخ.
الكتاب لطيف ومسلٍ، يشوبه الإسهاب في الوصف والتفاصيل الدقيقة في بعض الأحيان، كما أنني توقعت منه قيمة فكرية أكبر.

بسیار سفر باید...
آلن دوباتن را به تازگی کشف کردهام، نویسنده-فیلسوفی که نه فیلسوف بودنش مزاحم نویسندگیش میشود و نه مهارت نویسندگیش سبب میشود از بازگو کردن مباحث فلسفیش صرف نظر کند
فلسفهی دوباتن یک فلسفه همگانی و کاربردیست و در جزء جزء زندگی آدمهای معمولی جامعه کاربرد دارد و به نظر من این خود امتیاز بزرگیست.
اولین کتابی که آلن دوباتن خواندم کتاب تسلی بخشیهای فلسفه بود که کتاب بسیار خوبی بود دوباتن در آن کتاب با مطرح کردن شش مشکل بزرگ که باعث ایجاد اختلال روحی و روانی در هر فرد میشود سعی دارد با فلسفه و به کمک شش فیلسوف بزرگ تاریخ شش راهکار تسلی بخش ارائه دهد که از قضا این راهکارها بسیار کاربردی و قابل اجرا است
اما دومین کتاب که بسیار برایم دلچسب بود کتاب هنر سیر و سفر بود که کتابی بسیار خواندنی و لذتبخش است. دوباتن در این کتاب با محوریت قرار دادن چهار عنصر مرتبط با سفر: (عزیمت، انگیزهها، منظره و هنر) به روایت هشت سفرنامه خود به اقصا نقاط جهان میپردازد و به فراخور موضوع آثار یک نویسنده یا هنرمند را مورد بررسی قرار میدهد. مثلا در بخشِ هنر و در بابِ هنر دیده گشا دوباتن در مورد سفر خود به پرووانس مینویسد و از زاویه دید ونسان ونگوگ به موضوع مینگرد.

《زندگی بیمارستانی است که در آن هر بیمار آرزوی جایگزین کردن تختش را دارد. این یکی میخواهد جلوی رادیاتور رنج بکشد و آن دیگری تصور میکند اگر کنار پنجره باشد سریعتر بهبود مییابد.》

I hate travelling. Hate it with a vengeance. Hate it with a passion. I am sure it has something to do with having a useless passport ( I am an Indian). I remember attending multiple interviews when I applied for a student visa for a course in Glasgow. That was fun, queuing up with other aspiring Indians early in the morning at a visa office. I remember waiting in a long queue full of irritated acrimonious Indians in Bangkok after we arrived there for a holiday.
But I could travel within India. I hate that too. Traffic jams. The heat. Bad roads. Awful trains. Expensive flights. Other Indians - you think racism is the monopoly of white people? Oh boy, you have not met posh Indians who try to prevent other Indians from turning up in Goa. Or the more country boy Indians who play loud music on their phones.
Anyway, Botton provides much comfort to anti-travelers like me. By introducing me to Xavier de Maistre. A man who went around his own room during a forced confinement. I am no rebel or dueler like him. But yes, how I love my small flat. A drink in my room. A cigarette on the balcony. While writing on the art of travel, Botton also lays down the ammunition to battle the cult of travel.

يكمل الحكيم بوتون معالجته لمشكلات إنسان الحداثة
فبعد أن كتب عن السعادة والحبّ والسكن، هاهو يكتب عن السفر
"قليلة هي النشاطات التي تعدنا بمسرات كثيرة تعادل ما تعدنا به الأسفار"

كلّ واحد منّا يعتقد بأنّه محبّ للسفر بطريقة مختلفة
ونحمل بعض الحكايات والصور والأفكار والطموحات
غير أنّنا في السفر، في لحظة بعينها، قد لا نشعر كما نأمل

یکی از کتاب های خوب دوباتن.
یکی از قابلیت های دوباتن که رفته رفته توی کتاب هاش برجسته تر میشه دید قدرت تحلیل مسایل روزانه س. چیزهایی که شاید از نظر ما اون قدر معمولی بیان که هیچ وقت نتونن با اون وجه روشن فکرنمامون ارتباط برقرار کنن. این چیزها توی ذهن دو باتن به شکل عجیب و غریبی همراه میشه با نقل قول های خیلی ظریف و دوست داشتنی.
مثلا مگه میشه تکه ی پنجم از بخش "در باب سفر به مکان های گوناگون" رو فراموش کرد که چطور ورود نویسنده به یه رستوران بین راهی سوت و کور پرتش می کنه وسط
...تنهایی ها و انزوای آدمهای تابلوهای ادوارد هاپر

لذت میبرم از خوندن کتابهایی که پر از جزئیاتن و ازت میخوان به محیط اطرافت و ریزودرشتش بیاعتنا نباشی و بیشتر از قبل توجه کنی؛ حالا بهوسیلهی هنری که به جا و مکانی کنجکاوت میکنه، یا احساس همهویتی کردن با مکانی جدید و آزاد شدن فکر و اندیشههات و امکان اینکه از زاویهای دیگه به همهچیز نگاه کنی. و سفره��یی که باعث میشه بخشی از خودت رو توی مکانها جا بذاری و خاطرههاش رو بهدوش بکشی و دیدت رو بهقدری وسیع و نکتهبین کنه که از گشتن و کندوکاو تو یه اتاق ساده هم لذت ببری.

There's a certain self-effacing charm about Alain de Botton's writing that creeps up on you and which eventually becomes irresistible. Not one to shy away from big topics (love, philosophy, status, travel, Proust) he manages to bring you to fresh insights on each theme in a completely charming, highly readable fashion.
I've also seen him a few times on a BBC series about different philosophers, and the same charm is evident in person. He just seems like an altogether smart, together, sweet guy. It appears that he is quite successful, despite the disparate and commercially unpromising topics he chooses to write about. I hope that he is, because his seems to me to be a talent that deserves to be rewarded.

كتاب رائع يأخذك في رحلة إلى العوالم الظليلة من السفر، بما يحمله من متع ومشاهدات مبهجة للروح والنفس، في سياقات لم تخلو من فضاء التكوين المشترك للذات والمكان الذي نجد أنفسنا فيه.

عشق و علاقهام نسبت به این کتاب و البته آقای دوباتن، قابل وصف نیست.
قبل از اینکه کتاب تمام شود، ریویوهایی در سرم می چرخید. توضیحاتی مبسوط، تا طبق گفتههای خود کتاب، به "ازش خوشم آمد" اکتفا نکنم و نظراتم را راجع بهش بگویم. اینکه چرا خوشم آمد. از چه چیزش.
اما حال، مخصوصاً با فصل آخرش، تنها میتوانم تحسینش کنم و این نظر دادنها و غیره را بگذارم برای کمی بعد تر.
پ.ن: کتاب، هدیه تولدی بود از طرف لیلی، خانم توکلی و نرگس معینی (با تقدیمنامچههایی بس دلپذیر). سال نود و دو. که خواندنش به الان و برای زنگ تماشا افتاد. و البته که فکر میکنم برای این تعویق چهار ساله هم، حکمتی بوده. الان خواندنش، به نظرم خیلی بهتر از چهار سال پیش خواندنش بوده است.

بعداً نوشت: من نسبت به سن و این چیزها، به نظر خودم زیاد سفر کردهام. ساعتهای طولانی سرم را به پنجرهی ماشین یا قطار چسباندهام. مناظر را از دیده گذراندهام و دلم از حس و حال رد شدن از کنار گلهای گوسفند پر و خالی شده است. ساعتها در شب سرم را بیرون بردم و ستارههای کویر را از داخل ماشین درحال گذرمان نگاه کردهام. و در این کتاب، چنان از این بعضی لحظهها حرف زده و آنها را توصیف کرده، که ... دهانم باز مانده! فکرهایی که در زندگی روزمره به خیالمان میآید و حتی در نظرمان کمی چرت و پرت(!) است را، چنان به زیبایی شرح داده و برایشان مستنداتی از آثار فیلسوفان و متفکران و نقاشان آورده و میان آنها پل برقرار میکند، که آدمی غرق لذت میشود.
عکسهایش بس زیبایند. شعرهایی که در بین حرفها گنجانده. شیوهی خود کتاب و بخشهایش. حتی آن صداقت نویسنده و درمیان گذاشتن افکار بیشیله پیلهاش با ما، همگی چنان احساس صمیمیتی ایجاد میکنند (مخصوصاً آن عکس آخر کتاب از اتاق خواب نویسنده!) که بنظر من بیهمانند است.
اما به شما میگویم که این کتاب فقط راجع به سفر و مسافرت نیست. البته که در این مورد هم بسیار مفید است. اما بنظرم بیشتر درمورد زندگی کردن است. از راه رفتن در کوچهای که هرروز از آن میگذرید میگوید، تا صحرای سینا؛ که شاید گذرتان به آنجا نیفتد.
تکههایی هم از کتاب هست، که بنظرم خوب است اینجا هم بنویسم:

پ.ن: کتاب، هدیه تولدی بود از طرف لیلی، خانم توکلی و نرگس معینی (با تقدیمنامچههایی بس دلپذیر). سال نود و دو. که خواندنش به الان و برای زنگ تماشا افتاد. و البته که فکر میکنم برای این تعویق چهار ساله هم، حکمتی بوده. الان خواندنش، به نظرم خیلی بهتر از چهار سال پیش خواندنش بوده است.

بعداً نوشت: من نسبت به سن و این چیزها، به نظر خودم زیاد سفر کردهام. ساعتهای طولانی سرم را به پنجرهی ماشین یا قطار چسباندهام. مناظر را از دیده گذراندهام و دلم از حس و حال رد شدن از کنار گلهای گوسفند پر و خالی شده است. ساعتها در شب سرم را بیرون بردم و ستارههای کویر را از داخل ماشین درحال گذرمان نگاه کردهام. و در این کتاب، چنان از این بعضی لحظهها حرف زده و آنها را توصیف کرده، که ... دهانم باز مانده! فکرهایی که در زندگی روزمره به خیالمان میآید و حتی در نظرمان کمی چرت و پرت(!) است را، چنان به زیبایی شرح داده و برایشان مستنداتی از آثار فیلسوفان و متفکران و نقاشان آورده و میان آنها پل برقرار میکند، که آدمی غرق لذت میشود.
عکسهایش بس زیبایند. شعرهایی که در بین حرفها گنجانده. شیوهی خود کتاب و بخشهایش. حتی آن صداقت نویسنده و درمیان گذاشتن افکار بیشیله پیلهاش با ما، همگی چنان احساس صمیمیتی ایجاد میکنند (مخصوصاً آن عکس آخر کتاب از اتاق خواب نویسنده!) که بنظر من بیهمانند است.
اما به شما میگویم که این کتاب فقط راجع به سفر و مسافرت نیست. البته که در این مورد هم بسیار مفید است. اما بنظرم بیشتر درمورد زندگی کردن است. از راه رفتن در کوچهای که هرروز از آن میگذرید میگوید، تا صحرای سینا؛ که شاید گذرتان به آنجا نیفتد.
